How are you going to work in a Portuguese restaurant speaking only English?
Well, about the restaurant of course I thought that I would do the dishes, and whatever they tell me to do... Nothing else is possible I know...
Someone said that almost everyone speaks a little English though
But I'd take any jobs, like you said, some manual labor job would be just fine...
I just dont know that how open are Portuguese people to this...
I guess no one in the world likes when a foreigner goes to their country and wanting a job... but I've heard quite a few people got jobs in different countrys without speaking the local language....
I'd work for less money than normal ov course

Pretty much everyone is taking any job they can. The unemployment rate is closing in 16% and it's probably going to the 20s range in the next few years. And the youth unemployment is in the high 30 or even 40% range. I don't even know the exact number. Just look at Greece and Spain.

For restaurant jobs try Algarve in the summer. Even so it will be hard to get if you don't know someone there. The restaurant commerce took a big hit with the IVA (VAT) tax going from the intermediate 13 to the maximum rate of 23%. And they still have IRC and TSU to pay.

But with this happy tax increase government I'm not optimistic to say the least. People who earn more than 150K in personal income are going to be taxed at 65.5%. There's also a 28% tax in stock trades... This country is going from bad to worst.
The budget is out now, correct? Anything about poker?

which area of portugal has the best weather during winter/early spring? Still Algavre?
Is there area where it doesnt rain much? Also are rents cheaper, apartments easier to find during winter?

the weather does not change drastically from one region to another because it is a small country.

but fwiw, the south has better weather than the north.
also the coast line gets more mild weather than the interior. it does not rains much wherever you look.

as for rents, right now we are in the middle of some economical crisis that amongst other things; has pushed the prices down.

Hello D33P,

Still nothing new abouter poker regulations?
I am searching a country where playing poker is 100% tax free, and where professionnal poker players don't have to declare their earnings.

Do you know who I should contact to be sure about that? In france, we have the FISC which is in charge of these fiscal questions. It's because of this administration that many french players are currently leaving the country^^

Thanks !!

this is an awesome thread! im moving to lisbon at the start of the summer and just had a million questions answered! i do hope to meet and hang out with people from the poker community there as i only have 2 friends in lisbon.was there in october.lisbon is one awesome city! it has everything.i did honestly find it hard getting by on just english though and do have worries about picking up the lingo.was at pretty much every area on my visit.although my trip through cascais was ruined on the road between there and sintra...was involved in a 3 way road accident..well a superbike hit another car at high speed and the lady on the bike flew so far she hit our windscreen!!!noboby hurt too badly!but i was sure she was dead at the time! leading on to my next observation....portuguese people are insane on roads.driving is not for the feint hearted!so anyway only saw cascais, estoril and the marginal route by night(clearing the accident took 3 hours) looked awesome tho and im very biased towards there as i hope to frequent the casino in estoril alot ,but literally loved every area.and i would literally go back to lisbon just to see the palace gardens in sintra again, ive never seen anything like it!any advice from people who have gone through similar moves would be greatly appreciated! and sorry if this message is very long! take care guys

Any serviced apartments in lisboa?

Really love portugal and especially lisbon. Considering moving there after finishing university. But I feel its one of the less secure cities in europe. There wasnt a single day where I was not asked to buy drugs from several people. Also some pretty rough street fights.

Other than that I liked chiadu(hope I spelled it right)alfama and belem. What areas would you recommend for staying long term?

not even close, Portugal is still on top of other places in europe regarding security and lack of social tensions.

lol, really? where have you been?

it is a bit "player dependant". in a vacuum i would recommend Lisbon and Algarve.

fwiw pretty much everyday I was in the Chiado/Bairro Alto area, guys approached me almost everyday asking if I wanted to buy hash/coke/marijuana. I assume the tourist get approached more often, but besides occasionally get asked if we wanted to get drugs the place was really nice.

We are Cascais now, and my parents came to visit for a week and I have to say that we are all really impressed with the Lisbon/Cascais/Sintra area. Definitely think that the US vastly underrates Portugal as a place to visit, between cheap cost of living, good food, nice people, nice weather, and pretty views it's hard to beat.

in places with a lot of tourists there are some people trying to scam them.

i strongly discourage people from buying drugs when randomly approached in the street.

worst case scenario you will get robbed or scammed, best case scenario you will buy overpriced or/and with some poor quality if even any.

as for Lisbon/Cascais/Sintra it is for me hands down the best place to live in Portugal.

i am glad you are liking it.

Portugal? One of the best european cities regarding security, safety and street crime?

Not by a long mile...safer than Paris, Marseille, Napoli, Malaga or Athens.
Safe for world standards, far from it for EU standards
