At least New University of Lisbon have courses in English for both exchange students and locals. Though I'm not sure if you can do your whole studies in English but I would assume you could.

Hey, D33P, thanks for creating this thread . I've cancelled my flat here in Austria and I am looking to move elsewhere in late February. Portugal only just recently crossed my mind as a serious option, even if it is just for the next year.
Growing up in London, I'm naturally attracted to large cities, however I would also really like to learn how to surf and don't necessarily want to have to make long trips every day to get to a surf spot. If I were to move to Portugal, I would also like to learn Portuguese whilst I'm there, so language school or language teacher considerations are also of interest to me.
What area would you suggest I look in. Algarve?

if surfing is a big plus i would say Ericeira (nearby Lisbon) and Costa Vicentina (the shores of Alentejo).

As you are more attracted to large cities i would recomend Ericeira.

All the apartments in that area are huge, but considering the size decently priced (smallest 70 m², only checked casa.sapo.pt so far).
Do you think the landlords are likely do discriminate against foreigners, in the sense that they will give me a hard time finding an apartment? Also I recall you said that not speaking Portuguese should not be a problem in the major cities, is this different for Ericeira as it is outside of the city?

no, i dont think you will have a hard time finding an apartment.

all the people there, are very used to foreigners that come over the world to surf and stay there.

i dont think either that you would have any problem by not speaking portuguese.

found this video for you:

Thanks for the video D33P. That is a very small town though, though I guess if I want to go to Lisabon, it is just 30 minutes away, as they said in the video. And you are sure that internet will be legit there? Naturally fast and, more importantly, stable internet is crucial. Also do you have to wait for a long time to get a connection setup?
Anyway, thanks for all the information so far.

legit and stable internet there.

connection setup is fast, between 5-15 days, if you want it faster you can buy a mobile net pen device and hook it up yourself in 5 minutes (while you wait for the setup).

Hey D33P, do you have any information on health insurance? I'm thinking about how to manage health insurance for a potential move. I'm not sure I can keep my Austrian health insurance if I do not have my main residency there, or atleast not without paying a premium. What's the health insurance like in Portugal and how much can I expect to pay?

as a citizen of the EU i think you are able to get public health care.

as for private health care there are a lot of possibilities that are not very expensive imo.

i would say the Cascais line (between Lisbon and Cascais) or Figueira da Foz.

for 800€ a month you will have more options in Figueira da Foz.

Do you know anything about my school Universidade Nova de Lisboa?

Sorry, just saw this now don t know if you still need help. You have a 120€ tournament on Lisbon every month, but no cash games at all. The tournament is a 2-day ~200 players, somehow turbo, but the field is very soft and you will have a big edge if you are good at turbos.

In Estoril you have a 5/10 game most nights, it is still soft some nights but not as it used to be. You also have 2/5 2 nights week, and a 2/5 PLO game 1 day every week. Also, there is a 1/2 electronic table, but rake is very big in this one. One 275E tournament every month that usually get 200+ people playing on it.

Figueira da Foz only have cash games all days during the summer, most of the year is only on weekends. It is a 2/5. Estoril has a 5/10 almost everynight and 2/5 2 nights every week, also a 2/5 PLO game runing 1 day everyweek. If you are coming to play live, for 2 months Figueira da Foz might be ok, but if it is for more time you should try Estoril, renting a house in Estoril/Cascais, even if it is more expansive than Figueira da Foz. Lots of people speak english, it is beautiful and you will be very close to the beach - also you will very close to Lisbon.

How is Portugal mid March? I won a sat to EPT Madrid and was thinking of checking it out a few days before or after.

What length of time will give me a good ratio of time spent/cost/enjoyment?

What are some cant miss places to see/experience and the time required?

Suggestions on where/what to eat?

Thanks!

from people i've spoken to cascais seems to be the best mix of nice area/close to casino/english speaking. best of all worlds, really.

how is the cost of living there relative to lisbon and a US major city - say NYC? could i get a decent apartment for under $1000

It`s great if you are talking weather wise.

I would say that if you can stay for 2 weeks you will have a blast.

Lisbon, the Cascais Line and the villa of Sintra are a must imo. All these three locations are very near and have plenty to see and visit.

Eat pretty much everywhere and if you like, you have to try our fresh fish and seafood. Also our wines and beers.

No problem!

I have no ideia on the cost of living in NY, but you can get something for 800€, probably something really cool but I m not sure on how good it will be. I just made a quick google search and fond this 1/2, I m not sure on details but that s probably something close to this that you will get.
