As of 2008 the rule of thumb was: "Carrying up to 10 daily doses is legal, above that it's traffic."

But as a tourist expect no hassle if it's not much above 10 daily doses.

I can't find the exact quantities permitted by law.

It's no crime, but if you're portuguese you will have to go to the police station just to register the ocurrence. Then they'll scheduled a meeting in the Drugs Dissuasion Center where you'll talk with a psychologist and a jurist, that will explain you the hazards of drug abuse. Sometimes even a ex-drug adddict.

Expect no problems, though. Just don't carry big quantities around.

this never happens in real life.

simple possession is (and therefore threated as) a minor infraction like parking your car on the sidewalk.

How difficult would it be for an American to live in Lisbon without knowing Portuguese?

pretty easy.

most of portuguese people speak english (especialy people under 45/50) and we are very tolerate and open to foreigners.

and Lisbon as capital of Portugal is the most cosmopolitan city in the country with all the offers and comodities that a cosmopolitan city has.

Hiya.

Going to Lisbon for a five day holiday with my lovely wife.

What should I do while I'm there, what places to look at, what to avoid, etc, etc... Usually I prefer to explore the city by walking as much as I can, enjoy the local culture, restaurants, cafes, museums, girls (not a valid option this time), cocktails and all the other worldly pleasures.

Help me out a little bit here. Thanks.

hello Kesky.

Lisbon has a wide offer in almost every areas of interest, so depending on what you are looking for:

- as to tour - don`t miss the downtown center - its the city area that was rebuilt after the big earthquake in 1755 - here you have broad avenues packed with glamorous shops and castle of saint george and its old village inside. (to travel within lisbon use the underground, its fast, covers all city and you can buy a week pass).

also belém area - filled with gardens and museums if thats is your cup of tea.

if you want to see a dramatic contrast go to the new city area located on eastside. new futuristic buildings with some great museums and also a big oceanarium. it has also a lot of restaurants and discos/bars.

dont miss also the cascais and estoril line - its a sea line that goes from lisbon to estoril and it has numerous beaches, great restaurants, casino and lots of romantic places. (you can go by train from lisbon to estoril, its fast and very cheap).

also a plus, as to tour, its the sintra village - a bucolic magic place filled with palaces, castles and a medieval villa, as a couple you will love it (can go by train also from lisbon, fast and cheap)

- as for nightlife - bairro alto - upper side - its a must.
there are few places in the worls like that, packed with restaurants, discos and bars, streets filled with people all night long, great vibe.

also 24 de julho - its an avenue near te river packed with restaurants, discos and bars, great place also.

- as for shopping - pretty much all around the city you will find great malls, if you prefer street shops the downtown (baixa, rossio, chiado) is the place to go.

- as for eating - you will find great restaurants everywhere. lisbon as a city by the river has some dramatic views from great places to eat.

feel free to ask more if you want, also pm me if you want skype or cell phone number, im more than happy to help.

Are there any cash games around Lisbon? I played a tournament at Casino Estoril and, with the other event, there were probably 300 poker players there, but for some reason, the only cash game was an empty "virtual poker" machine.

apart from that NL200 machine there is a "semi-private" room where you can play NL1000.

in casino estoril and related to poker, the person to talk is renato morais - estoril tournament director.

I'm moving to Lisbon soon. What's the best way to go about getting a place to rent? I plan on living by myself. Do they have apartment hunter types over there?

Will month-to-month or 3 month rentals be available? What parts of the city should I look for or look to avoid? I want something semi-nice and convenient since I won't have a car.

Thanks.

That's what I'm trying to find out. Apparently you need a fiscal number, which can be obtained with a Portuguese address and a passport. Hopefully it's not too hard.

I cannot say I've actually been, but I have had a friend who has lived their for much of her life... she talks a lot, so I've been privied to quite a bit of information.

*If you plan to live in central Portugal (away from the beach) you can expect temperatures to rarely dip below 0°C and rarely get above 20°C.

*January is the chilliest month, and I doubt t-shirts would be sufficent.

*It's a bit rockier and more mountain-y than most people think.

*Lisbon has quite a Heroin problem right now, but I think it's gotten a slight bit better as of late.

*Taxes are quite a bit lower than in most of the EU, which might have something to do with the financial hiccup they are in the midst of.

*Because of the financial issues facing Portugal today, you can probably scoop up a nice property at very resonable price.

*Portugese are generally very friendly and open, they like to talk a lot (so she says) and love good food... especially seafoods.

---Even though you say you aren't one for culture/history, it's rather impossible to resist Portugal's storied past, as Portugal used to be one of the wealthiest lands of the world, due to its sea-faring Explorers and the like. The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon is one of the world's finest. I cannot recall but I think that there is a maritime sort of Nautical themed museum also that is quite famous nearby.

I hope that's helpful... You are so fortunate to have the ability tp just pick up and move to a different country. I am very jealous. Good Luck to you if you do!

just go straight for remax.

they have plenty offers for renting.
renting market is going to boom soon but atm prices are dropping heavily.

if you plan to have a standart legal contract for renting i think (will check it soon) there is a minimum period, that is 1 year, with 2 months notice to cancel it.
but if you agree otherwise with the house owner anything goes.
and yes, a lot of people rent houses for 3 monts or on a monthly basis.

anywhere in lisbon is pretty nice and convenient.
only avoid old areas like intendente and so and you`ll be just fine.

other option is to look in the outskirts of lisbon (linha de sintra ou linha de cascais) where you will also find an abundant offer for renting houses with all the comodities you will need.

a visit to the oporto wine cellars and a cruise in the douro river to see the vineyards are a must imo.

after october it`s not likely that you can walk in a t-shirt and shorts confortably in porto, unless you are from a very cold place.

de nada. o prazer foi meu!
