My friends and I (all online poker players) are looking at Natal to possibly move to for six month. In the past we've lived in Playa Del Carmen, Buenos Aires, Medellin and have traveled South America. Brazil and Natal are high on the list for us because of the climate, beaches and women. The wants are:

Live very close to the beach. Hopefully a local thong bikini (top priority, obv) beach. No tourist and plastic chairs please!
Hot local women, who aren't working girls, are approachable, have the latina passion.
Being able to meet locals and feel part of the "community", so being able to do Portuguese classes in a school, or join clubs etc.
The city not being too big and overwhelming so that we get lost and anonymous in it. A walkable neighborhood.
Good food options.
Not ridiculously expensive.
Reliable internet.

Natal seems that it certainly beats out Rio, Sao Pauloa, Fortaleza for those. My question is are there any other cities we should research in the north of Brazil (Joao Pessoa looks like a good option)?

Also about Natal, how difficult would it be to find either 2 2 bedroom apartments (in the same building), a 4 bedroom apartment or a house (close enough to the beach) for 6 months from June until Jan? I know that starts high season and we are gringos who aren't long term renting so in the past it's been difficult. Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks for everything. Sorry for the standard sounding pokerplayer-gringo-expat moving to latin city wants sun, beaches and women question.
Jay,

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. Life has gotten in the way.

Yeah I'd go with Natal or the NE over any other in Brazil.

1. It's closer to Europe. About half the flying time than what you'd use from Rio/SP.

2. It's (a lot) cheaper. Especially housing. Women are women. They have some fine specimens all over you know.

3. Buzzing live scene if you ever want to do some donking around. Regular fixture on the BSOP tour etc.

In Natal you will have zero problems finding a spot right on the beach. Houses or apartments. You will pay slightly more than the locals, but hey, that's life. If you want to stay away from the touristy type places I'd suggest just north of the city, like Genipabu and Redinha. It's not always very safe there, but still you can find some nice places with ok security. Won't find many working girls there either. At least not top pro ones.

South of Natal you will find beautiful places like Tabatinga and Pipa. Pipa would be my choice if I had your criteria, but very bad internet last I was there.

The thing about the ladies there is that it's very tough to approach them unless you speak the language. Very few speak English in the north east. Money and looks will only get you so far. Some of the girls won't expect like cold hard cash as "payment", but a nice meal and cab rides and gifts. They are not hard core hookers, but like wants to a gringo for the convenience.

Another thing to consider is the visa situation. With Brits I don't know at the moment, but other Euros only get 90 days at a time. Then out for another 90 before you renew. Shoot me a PM for a workaround on this.

Like I said, I see no problem in getting a house or apt for this time period. They will be throwing keys at you.

Joao Pessoa is a nice option also. They have a very good poker scene there, slightly better than Natal, but it's a smaller city and not as nice IMO. The airport there has fewer flights also, so it could be that you'd have to go to Natal for travels to Euro or inside South America.

I never remember the right tibau. There's one in Natal and one really close to where I live. I know that in the tibau closer to where I live there was a game with players from São Bento that was 50 on the button and 5k buy in. But I think you are talking about a different game.

Lol i'm so ******ed. Got a notification that you posted here and decided to check the thread on my phone. Last post was the one you talked about a big game during carnaval. I replied and just now realized it's the last post from the first page.

I blame the app though, I've already set it up to always open on the last page and it just won't work
Also, huge coincidence that carnaval just ended around here.

Are any of you guys playing the tournaments there? I see on FB that both places have pretty big guarantees at the moment. They reached 40K at Clube de Poker and Meza have had some big ones lately. How are the games?

pretty soft. I don't go there very often but u know many players that are pretty average and they always get good results when they go to natal. there are some pretty good tournaments going on in small cities lately. like on the 22nd of this month we have the santa cruz 20k. next month we have the mossoro 15k, etc.

Nice.

Yes, I agree with you. Since the player pool is quite small, it turns into a home game type thing in Natal. Players know each other very well etc.

Will you go and crush the tables in Santa Cruz?

well that's not surprising at all.. the biggest club in all of brazil h2 in sao paulo implemented a no cell phone on the table rule about 2 years ago and when that happened i wasn't too easy about that since it meant they had some problems with people using that phone camera and bar code on the deck to see the winning seat on the river.. after that a couple of months ago the tourist police department closed the club down for about a month.. the club tried hard to sell the "the government still wants to shut down what they see as a game of chance but we are fighting to let everyone know it's a skill game" propaganda but the real reason was that they cheated a couple of high rolling tourists (i think they were russians) that lost over 300k reais (rumored) in a span of a couple of days.. they run high stakes (over 50-100 reais blinds with multiple straddles) whenever there is interest which is not that often but maybe a couple of times a month

wait, is this for real? I haven't heard about anything on the news. can you give us some evidence?
Ask me about Natal, North Eastern Brazil Quote
06-01-2015 , 06:44 PM
such evidence you won't be able to simply google it..
i guess i shouldn't blame the whole club since it is actually really well run but the high stakes portion is run by some other people that are not actual owners of the club.. kind of a sublet.. and i'm also not saying everyone involved in the high stakes group there (there aren't too many players that actually play these stakes) took part on the cheating but some of the dealers had to be in on it and probably at least one of the managers too.. and obviously some of the players

I've been in Natal during the last SCOOP and it was great!

I think Natal is the best city of brazilian NE to live.

Nowadays, 1$ = 3,60BRL. You can easily live like a king there, hehe.

the bsop was pretty awesome. it was the biggest bsop outside of SP editions yet. friend of mine shipped the main event for about 100k and another good friend of mine shipped the last chance $100 buy in for 6k. I also played my first bsop event ever and got 12th, the event paid around 16k up top. such a bittersweet feeling.

Yo Kansas, are you still around in Natal? What is going on with the poker scene up there?

Random story, I was in Vegas playing some **** and someone texted me a hand history from a blog down there; one of the guys I used to play with tanked almost 15 minutes and called with A high in one the high rollers in Fortaleza. He had the best hand.

Loved salvador and recife night life was awesome. But in the south they are very racist, being from iranian origin but born in the UK, if people found out I was iranian they wouldn't take too kindly to it and often would make racist remarks and sometimes threats

People in the south part of Brazil are indeed racist and they are currently very afraid of the Muslim invasion for some reason.

If you go to the northeastern part of Brazil you'll be welcome by everyone though.

Thanks Kansas
I got a vivo sim with a data plan of 1.2gb per week for r$10 per week. The lady who sold it to me spoke no English and I speak no Portuguese so I couldn't all the info I needed. Hopefully you or someone else can.

How do I check my data balance?
Is it possible to buy more data if I run out?

I think my package is called vivo turbo.

Obrigado!
