Jan and feb are the best two months for summer in Punta del este!
Montevideo's weather is great as well, but a lot off people is out of town during this period.

What are your options for internet and cable tv and how much do they cost? how much is your utility bill during the hottest months? are there any american restaurants? how good is the medical and dental care? could an american open a business there?

I have ADSL connection of 30Mbps for $100/month, then cable tv is around $40... Utilty bill might be around $50
By american restaurants, you mean american brands or american cooking? you obv have a large variety of bars/restaurants.
Medical and dental care are both good and cheap compared to the us, im always absolutely shocked about the prices that US citizens have to pay for any kind of procedure.
And your last question im not 100% sure what you mean, it wouldnt be against the law lol.

If you go to Punta del Este I guess there is no "look" that girls go down for, since the girls there are from like 5 or 6 different countries, but being foreigner I think you will be just fine.
And yes, most girls are white. From south america I have only been to Argentina and Uruguay... And I guess Punta del este has to be in one of the top spots regarding girl quality, there arent many asians or african american girls, if you are going for that kind tho...

Just thought I'd throw in my two cents here...

I lived in Buenos Aires for a year and spent a week in Punta Del Este in January (which I think is the best month of the year to be there).

First night was new years eve and saw one of the coolest fireworks shows I've ever seen. There were thousands of drunk people on the beach...good time. We went to the beach by day and went to clubs by night.

The girls are obscenely hot at Punta del Este in the summer. It's just wealthy South Americans (tons from Argentina) so the quality is insane. You'll also have a tough time getting with one, imo. The bikinis are definitely a different shape (practically thongs). My friends and I just sat on the beach for hours with our mouths open. A lot of the girls are young too - watch out for 16 year olds (or don't? lol) when you go out.

I played 5/10 (or was it 3/6? I can't remember). Game was incredibly soft. Tons of Argentine and Brazilian megafish. Even with a 5% uncapped rake it's beatable, though I'm not sure if it's crushable. Rake is so high I would just play nitty. The Conrad Casino has a very nice casino. Not that big, but they have lots of hot cocktail waitresses that will get you nice drinks (grey goose, nice champagne, whatever you want). The property is very nice and classy. Lots of baller South Americans spewing a lot of money with their trophy wives.

It's completely safe and very nice. One thing to keep in mind is that it is EXPENSIVE. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The food is not $5 in a restaurant...it's more like $20, and that's not at a fancy place. Yeah, you can eat empanadas for like $1 each but if you want a sit down meal at a restaurant it's not really that cheap. Also, the best nightlife is EXTREMELY expensive. We went to clubs that had several hundred dollar cover charges and very expensive drinks. The best spots are going to cost you a lot to get in, trust me. You can stay in a hostel for like $20 a night if you want to share an unair-conditioned room with three other people on the top bunk, or you can stay at a hotel which will be a lot more.

This place really is awesome, but don't expect it to be a bargain. Also, travel to and from will be expensive and it's not that easy to get to. First you have to get to Montevideo (which imo is boring, fyi), and then take a two hour bus ride east to Punta del Este.

Thats why games are so easy, even $10/$25

And its true what Mogul said, a lot of the girls play hard to get etc... But even then, Brazilians are like 3x easier than Argentinians

Yes, there is 10/25 on conrad, but is not always running since they often dont find enough players to get an entire table running, but you will find it at least 7 or 8 nights during january.
They run any stake people demand, during one or two night during last summer there was a $25/$50 game running, but it didnt last more than a few days.

Can anyone confirm what the rake is at the Conrad? I've been seriously contemplating just playing like 8 hrs of poker a day in January, hitting the beach, going out, etc.

I don't want to do it though if the game is not beatable for a good winrate. Thoughts?

I may fly to Buenos Aires & Montevideo this upcoming Sunday Oct. 21st! Obviously a very last minute thing, haven't had time to do ANY planning or pre-trip research.

Any suggestions as to areas of Montevideo to stay in (or NOT to stay in) greatly appreciated. Also, any suggestions as to specific hotels would be hugely appreciated.

I'd like to pay around $40-60 U.S. dollars per night for a hotel room, but I have no idea of the prices in Montevideo. Don't want to stay in hostels, but I'm OK with nice guesthouses (don't even know if they have these in Montevideo.

If I make the flight I'm sure I'll buy a guide book to read on the flight, but it would be nice to have a plan before I arrive.

just spent a couple of days in Montevideo. Everyone I met there was very nice, friendly, & helpful, but I cannot imagine why a young person would want to move to Monevideo to play poker when there are so many more interesting & less expensive places to move to.

I'm sure that living is cheaper for locals than it was for me as a tourist, but regardless, Montevideo is in no way cheap. And I think it would be a super boring place to live.

Boy the locals sure do enjoy their mate though--EVERYONE is drinking that stuff 24/7!!

Planning a trip to Punta Del Este for about two weeks from now. Does anyone have any advice on hotels? I'm looking for something in the $125 to $200 per night range.

Is it worthwhile to rent a car in Punta? Also, what's the cheapest airline that gets you from Punta to Buenos Aires?
