Brutal. Yeah I had a bug problem at the first unit I ever stayed at, but multiple ones there after and it never has been an issue.

Has anyone obtained a drivers license in the pines?

As per their rules if you just extend your visa waiver you aren't eligible as you have to be able to stay for at least 6 months.

Are there fixers who can get around this rule?

Well you can easily extend 6months(dunno if you don't want to stay that long)
Though they just told me that tourist cannot do 6months extension anymore(but you can still do multiple times 2months or one month without leaving the country)

^ think it depends on the city as to whether u can get 6mo extensions or not

cannot get them in Angeles, only 2 months, but u can in Manila and Cebu, for example, so I've heard

you were told no in davao?

Seems like they changed it from 6 months to 1 year (officially at least):
Quote:
In addition, for foreigners, original and photocopy of passport with entry of at least one (1) month and visa duration of at least one (1) year from date of application.
http://www.lto.gov.ph/license-permit...s-license.html

At a smaller LTO office, just saying "I cannot get 1 year visa, I have to extend it every 2 months, I plan to live here for a few years" can actually work. But no guarantees obviously

1. visa extension :
so, went to head office of Bureau Of Immigration on magallanes drive, intramuros, Manila

The purpose was easy, to extend from a non visa entry of less than 30 days for another 29 days .. You go in, go straight to fill in a small form, then they will attach a line number for you to wait your turn to submit it windows 22 to 25 and this waiting goes for about 30 minutes till it's your turn and for submitting it at 10 am, the release schedule to receive your passport back with the new stamp, was 2 PM same day for a cost of 2.130 php. The extension goes from the planned 30th day for another full 29 days, so if you go a week early, you don't lose days... and they even recommended to come 2 weeks early next time for the 6 months extnesion.
While waiting there, I saw some folks with a 'BI Accredited' jacket. So I selected to strike up a conversation with one of them who had about 30 passports in her hands + corresponding big stack of 1k bills.
Basically next time for the 6 months extension, I will let that agent be the one to submit and queue for it. She actually said she would even pick my passport up in Pasay (but not outside Manila), and deliver it back for a cost of 2k for their services and I am not sure how much the 6 months extension will cost.
For a 'developing' country, the West could sure learn a thing or two, with a total of about 45 windows to address the various services offered, very reasonable lines and queing time with modern screens for the number calling, reasonable costs and overall great attitude from everyone. Also, for this first extension and later extenstions, not much needed... just a local address, local phone number.. that's it.. no intrusive documents were required from a local 'sponsor' or proof of anything on your side. Big brother has not yet arrived in this place..

2. road accident / hospitalization.
I have always been a very aggressive, high cc bike/car driver and variance caught up to me after just 1 week driving a very reasonable 125cc scooter in the Phils.. Roads are just not good and traffic is horrible and I did not adjust enough. Do not drive at night as it's even worse!
Anyways, I had not yet done any research on medical facilities in my neighborhood and after the initial shock, I was able to get up and go back with a trike to my place. The open wound on the elbow was ugly but it was my back that scared me as it seemed paralyzed almost and super painful. I asked my girl to make some calls and get a nurse from the subdivision but all were working and had to wait 8 hours or so till one came back to get advise on where to go. We called the local barangay ambulance 11pm to get me there. They had 4-5 emergency beds, and a total of 100 beds for the place. The young doctor was competent and the staff was plenty and available. The philosophy is also not of you being a slave as in the West. There is actually a bill of rights of the patient hanging in the hallways and the patient seems to be able to have the final say on matters!
So, the conclusion of all this learning is :
- prevention is key of course
- do your research on where to go in emergency : which PRIVATE hospitals in your neighborhood. These will not be horribly expensive. 2 nights stay in a private room with even a coach for a relative to watch over you 24/7 came down to 15k, including xrays and treatment.
-have a medical insurance for medical repatriation in case you need it. they are about 100 usd a year for stays of less than 3 months.

Hey,

maybe discussed earlier but Duterte looks to bann online gambling. Did some google research but didn't figure if this is going to apply to pokerstars and other onlinepoker sites aswell. If so question is when is it gonna get banned?

Dont stress. Duterte's only interest in gambling is

a) propping up the illegal betting shops of his mates.
b) shaking down all the online gaming firms which run their operations here.

Unless theres a way for him to make money on it, he wont do ****.
