regarding philippine citizenship... i jus got my philipine passport like last year and only 1 of my parents is filipino... all you have to do is go to the philippine embassy in your country (e.g. canada) and enquire about dual citizenship which enables you to have two passports, i suggest going with your parents or parent to the embassy jus so you have less problems.

regarding banking... i suggest probably opening a HSBC or CitiBank bank account because there is a branches here in philippines including here in Davao but im not sure what charges you will suffer... I brought a sh*t load of cash with me so i havnt needed to take much money from my card however when i do i jus use my card from the UK but im lucky in the fact that they just take a charge of like 1% which is the visa fee that my bank passes on to me... my bank is nationwide for all those UK players interested.

Im gonna be in manila next week so if any of you guys there wanna meet up for a drink or sutin and want me to talk about my experience here in davao or help you out with getting apartments or houses here in davao im cool with that.

Concerning getting money to the Philippines.. I opened an account at BDO, and got checks from Full Tilt Poker, however it takes a long time to get access to this money(7-14 days to receive check, and clearance time in the bank is 30-40 days, i think).

You can probably use moneybookers to send money directly to your account also. I think it is harder to opened an account in 2009 than in 2008..

I used PLDT before and it didnt work good at all, got disconnected several times every day and stuff like that, so i dont think it matters what provider you have

Guess that internet just isnt that reliable here

Does anyone know how much you can expect to pay for rental homes close to a beach as tourist? I am heading to the Philippines soon for a month, and am looking to visit different areas which may be interesting for an extended vacation later on. I'm not that interested in towns, more in areas which have a town within like 10 miles.

How is internet connection stability in Cebu City and Mactan Island? Is the beach on Mactan any nice?

What do you mean by "facilities"? Massage parlors, spas, and girly bars?

I’m seriously considering moving to the Philippines from the U.S. within the next two or three months. Have read most of this thread and am really liking what I’m hearing. Considering Manila/Makati and Cebu, visiting both in two weeks.

For Makati:

1) Apartments/Condos
I’m definitely gonna take a look at Joya in Rockwell. Can someone suggest maybe one other decent/medium-priced ($400-600ish/mo. rent) complex I should check out in the area?

2) Nightlife
Anyone have 1 or 2 good club suggestions (where regular local chicks might hang)? Unfortunately my visit is only during weekdays, but it seems like there’s **** always going on.

3) InternetIt sounds like the internet connection will be more than adequate in Manila if I’m willing to pay for it. Saw there's a 12mbps provider.

What about for Cebu City? I typically 6-10 table across two sites (Stars & FTP at once), maybe with something like pandora music running in the background. I’ve read mixed things about Cebu’s internet: there’s a 3mbps provider, but it sounds like service can be sporadic. Someone mentioned they use Globe as their DSL, with SmartBro or a 3G provider as a backup (and maybe another DSL provider PLDT as a 2nd backup). I’m willing to pay for all this if that’s what it takes to be able to grind reliably on a daily basis.

What about internet in Subic?

I think all my other questions have been answered somewhere else in here.

I’ll be in Manila from Aug 30-Sept. 3 and would be happy to dip into the b.r. and buy a beer for any 2p2ers who are around.

Hey homey:

I am traveling SE Asia for 75 days beginning in October and will be spending 20 or so of those days in Makati / Manila (most likely in November). If you get yourself set up locally by then, please let me know so that we can meet up for a beer.

Enjoy your trip and good luck.

1) You might be surprised to hear that Rockwell isn't just a "decent/medium-priced" complex. It's one of the most expensive, high-end places to live in the Metro ($400-600 is a ****load to spend on rent here). For convenience, safety, and "poshness" it's gonna be hard to beat, so if you can afford it I wouldn't recommend any other place.

If you're interested in some hardcore research, check out this forum. It's more or less a directory of every residential building in the Metro and there are photos/details in the corresponding discussion threads.

2) I'm not the most qualified to answer this question but you can't go wrong with Embassy @ The Fort.

3) Not sure about internet in Cebu or Subic but in Metro Manila, you have the following options for broadband internet: SkyBroadband cable, PLDT DSL, Globe DSL, Bayantel DSL. I would recommend against Sky. It's great for downloading but terrible for gaming, which unfortunately includes poker.

Sun is reputed to be the best mobile internet in Metro Manila. Here is a comparison between Smart Bro, Sun Broadband Wireless & Globe Tattoo, and here is thread discussing the three.

Check out the LivingInCebuForums for more info on living in Cebu.

When you guys get here, PM me for my number and we can grab a drink.

I asked about this in the Golf Forum, but not too many replies, so I'll try here because it seems there is some good info here.

I'm going to the PI this September and I'm wondering what a good place for golfing would be, decent courses, safe place to stay, maybe some live poker. If anyone can help that would be great.
