Pretty sure I've been to this exact resort and several other resorts in Mactan. When I arrived in Cebu I was appalled that dirt poor people pay for such a shoddy beach experience, but I'm from San Diego, California, so I'm used to nice, free beaches.

Has anyone here lived in General Santos, Cagayan de Oro or Zamboanga (all in Mindanao)? I would look into Mindanao major cities for the elusive beach+internet+nightlife combo.

Well Portofino is the beach in the picture and it's quite ok. The entrance is just $2-3. If you think Portofino is dirty, then you are probably going to have a problem with living in the Philippines in general.

There are other more high end beach resorts like Crimson, where you pay P1.4k and get the clean environment, buffet some cabana boy who calls you Sir and runs around fetching you drinks.

Personally I prefer mixing it with the locals. And, at the end of the day, all the beaches near Cebu basically suck. Hop onto the bus and go to Malapascua or fly to Boracay if beaches are your thing.

All the best beaches are either quite remote or on islands and the internet is terrible. You have to decide what your priorities are or look for utopia in another country.

Dirty?

I don't normally swim much but just prefer the beach town touristy spots they always seem more fun, everyone is living like its their last day on earth.

I know it drives prices up moving to a baking hot country and living in the City is not my bag

Sounds expensive but worth it if its solid. Cool maybe there is hope for the Phillapines yet.

gaston can probably give better info on it though
Not dirty, it's ok just not as good as the places with sick beaches in many other places in Phil's.

It's still an ok place to chill though.

It was part of the sky cable package. So the 4k a month was for tv package and internet. The inter only dropped out twice in 9 months and that was in two mega big storms and only for an hour at most. other than that it was great.

PLDT DSL is reliable once you get it installed, but Pooter's post is the first time I've heard anything good about the cable internet here.

I wasnt expecting to hear PLDT recomended I lived in two different grind houses in Cebu and found PLDT to be pretty bad at both although they seem to be running the show there somehow.

Maybe they have better set up in Manilla or elsewhere.

Supernova using 3G wireless. Metro Manila.

Had a bad connection a few times. No significant loss because of it. I do have a backup using a different network.

Manila is better for internet and nightlife, I can't really speak on Bacolod and Davao, but the internet is generally better in the bigger cities. Internet is somewhat patchy in Cebu, especially with PLDT. They upgraded their DNS servers awhile ago and ****ed up surfing the web. It's grindable for playing poker and torrents.

Some friends have Sky in the city and say it's ok. We had some other friends on PLDT in the city and they said it hardly ever disconnected, but another friend in the same building has ****ty internet with the same provider. Generally though internet is better in the heart of the city than the outskirts.

Get a backup Globe Tattoo and Smart Bro usb sticks. They cost around P1.2k and you get a 30 day, always connected deal on Smart (limited) and P50 a day unlimited surfing on Globe.

If you after good internet better not come to Philippines. Though i quess you could get somehow ok if you pay lot(=backup connection)
I lived over one year on Cebu at multiple places and didn't feel like grinding any of them. BEaches are far but nighlife is pretty nice.
Now staying in Davao and first hotel i stayed had massive connection problems second one has bit better. For nice beach you can take short boat ride to samal. Had couple of nice clubs here also.

You guys that are worried about the internet connection should look up :

http://www.connectify.me/dispatch/

Get that and 2-3 usb dongels and an wired connection and you should be pretty set even in the more remote places in the province.

It's a good investment if your main income comes from Poker.

seems like a good idea. anybody used it before, is it reliable?

I think I will start in Manila and Cebu, check auf the casinos and the cities. Then get a smart bro and travel around to see biaches.

Sky and PLDT needs th have a 1yr contract? Staying for couple of mths only.

How does connectify work with poker clients tho? If you switch ip addresses you're going to get disconnected from the client. You don't need much speed for poker, but you can create redundancy by using 3g dongles w/ unlimited internet (100p for 3 days). Unfortunately, I think all the secondary internet providers rely on PLDT backbone/gateway/dns/whatever so true redundancy might be impossible here.

Still, the connectify could be good for downloading/streaming.

Im not sure how it will work, but if you tunnel all your connections true a VPN I guess you would get the same IP for all of them.

does anyone ITT live in Manila anymore? been living for a few months now. was playing some live in resorts world back in october when the 200/400 with straddle action was juicyyyyy but now there is just a few super nitty 50/100 tables. 50/100 is a good stake to grind but the nitty/slow locals make it so boring. Are there any upcoming live poker series with decent buyins anywhere in the country soon?

Manila is really cool but really starting to miss good old northern europe.

Restaurant and gym (pref 24/7) recommendations in fort bonifacio?

also have pesos want ftp/stars pm.
