Lived, not visited briefly mind you.

Reason I asked, and it's been echoed a ton in this thread, is, it's really not advisable to live in conditions just a step or two above the conditions the locals are living in, and to live among them, unless you have some experience doing so?

A catch 22, I know.

Thing is, if you do decide to go down this road, it's much better to start off in a place like Thailand, then the Philippines.

If you have little - no 3rd world experience, and still want to go to Philippines I'd suggest you bring more money, and live in a nicer condoesque room, in areas where other foreigners live as well.

If you do have a decent bit of 3rd world experience, then, disregard everything I just wrote, and, definitely, you can live in a cheaper room among the locals, although it won't always be fun.

Either way,

http://www.sulit.com.ph/

This is the website you want to use to search for rooms.

It has a very user friendly interface (few other things in the Phils will though ) and you can search for rooms in any part of the city/country, in any price range.

btw, Cebu is also cheaper, over all, then Manila is, so you might be surprised at how nice of a room you can get for what, to you, might seem like pretty cheap.
Thanks for that link. good info and I agree with the advice. I've lived in one third world country for 8 months and I currently live just outside of Seoul so I 'm fairly well traveled.

Part of it is just curiosity based on some of the average salaries posted.

Catches them a bit off guard

But hey it's nice to walk around and feel like a 9 or 10.. hehe, miss it somewhat!

Well I certainly know what Gwapo means, but, I have to admit, I don't know that phrase there.

What's it mean?

It's not a well constructed sentence and sort of hard to translate

talaga is really/O RLY
Bola-bola would basically mean BS (it's also meatballs/name of dish)
lalakero = girl who easily gets guys, like a "female playah"
bolera = girl who uses flattery to get what she wants

Something like that

Nah its just an old joke, like in Thailand we use to say to chicks, oh i got here last night and the lady was saying, oh hum yai hum yai, whats that mean?, the goofy little bastads love that one. Sure to get your bollcoks fondled

I don't really have a favorite, I stayed in the royal Amsterdam when it first opened and really liked it, i have stayed in the Blue Nile a few times, its ok (but not been there for a few years so not sure how its holding up) Recently stayed in the Oasis, which is a trike ride away but still very easy access to fields, and i really liked it there too, nice and quite big pool, well out of the ****. I am planning on staying at tropical breeze next time, as my friends all say good things about it.

I stayed at the pacific breeze and the Swiss cottage, the first is better value than the second IMO and I would stay there again but neither are anything to rave about. My mate always stays at the wild orchid which is pretty nice but not particualry cheap.

Recently stayed at Wild Orchid for a couple of days and thought it was terrible, really old rooms, dirty and poor service.

Also tried out Galaxy i think its called just for the brand new factor, nothing special really, although they did have porn streaming on 2 tv channels.

Favourite is still Lewis Grand, great pool, nice vibe and super friendly staff. Although i do miss royal Amsterdam now its had a make over and lost its charms.

Hmm I saw my mates room last week at the wild orchid and it was fine, dunno if you just got unlucky with an older room mate.

Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. Don't trust the online prices, they are usually inflated somewhat. If you are set on coming to Cebu, I can pass only details of a realty agent, but she normally does higher end stuff.

Asking how much is the cheapest apartment here is just a decision in how much of a much dump/bad area you want to live in.

Grunching because I'm on an iPhone and roaming to get Internet. I'm flying to Puerto Princessa today for 5 nights by myself (had visa issue in Thailand, killing time here) so any advice on cool cheap places to stay would be nice and Im always down to meetup for anything from day tourist activities to going out or whatever.

Can't be too upset about being forced to go on vacation here I guess

Are you staying in the city or elsewhere?
There's a nice beach resort outside the city, but it's tricky to get to. This would be about p3K nightly and it's a tourist spot and impossible to get to the nightlife etc.

Price range?

On Rizal st (PP is extremely easy to navigate, all common spots are on or nearby this very long street), there's a bunch of mid-end hotels. The biggest/most typical one, is Badjao Inn. You can go here and see if you find a decent room. If they're full, there will be plenty other options in walking distance nearby. Decent rooms in this area go for about p1K per night.

If you go a little bit further from the center, you can find cheaper options for p500 (clean rooms w/hot water+ac).

I suggest you rent a bike to get around as the city is super easy but distances are a bit lengthy. They're p500 for 24hours, you'll get them for 400 if you're a bargain nit.
Trikes are 10 pesos in PP and locals pay either 7 or 8 (you'll get this price if you want). Very easy to get transportation.

You'll find Tiki bar, there's always a live band here every day, great staff and lots of people in the evening. Food is decent, but recommend BBQ chicken at "Chicken Inato". There might be action at "Warehouse" as well, outdoors disco type place. Degen bars in PP are mediocre, for desperation go to Equss near the airport

If you plan on going to their famous Undergroud River in Sabang, I suggest you go on your own because it's a long way to travel in a guide car plus they stop in lots of random affiliated places.

Hey guys, I'll be in Cebu for about 10 days coming up with the woman and am just wondering about some cool things to do there when one isn't trying to ship girls/get hammered. She's spent time there and has a few friends but is from Leyte so isn't intimately familiar with the area. I'd like some ideas for things to do just the two of us. We'll probably hit up a few spas and Mactan Island but after that I'm a bit lost on things to do. Food & drink, theater, history are my main hobbies if that helps. Thanks in advance.

I spent 4 days in the City itself, I pretty much just drank and fked when I was there and didn't see any of the sights really so can't help there.

However getting decent food was hard, I hit up ayala mall a couple of times and managed to get some decent food there if that is any use?

Leaving tomorrow for Manilla, and then Cebu.

Just wondering, how hard is it to get a sim card there? Also, anyone got any restaurant recommendations near to the Remington Hotel?

Thanks!

Sim cards are time a dozen and you can get them anywhere... Ask some of the employees their at costumes and they will happily sell you a brand new sim card.

I've been to Manila. I stayed in Malate and Makati. I felt uncomfortable walking around Malate after dark. Makati was ok, so can anyone tell me how far is Makati from the 3 major card rooms?

standard room is 2300 inc. thru the apt. I'm there from the 19th, mostly to avoid the traffic which is terrible indeed. Reviews put me off too, but doesn't seem to be much value here for hotel rooms. In Ermita right now and it's 1900 php a nite for a shoebox, although it is clean (casa bocobo). Casino nearby but table only. Not so bothered about the girls as been in Thailand a year already.... and planning a trip to AC soon. :-)
