Sound advice, HoC is pretty good. Just note though that it is aimed largely at full ring games, but the fundamentals it teaches will stand you in good stead in the majority of games imo.
I'd also highly recommend Theory of Poker and NL hold em Theory and Practice once you get to grips with the basics. In section B, Mason's books are a little outdated, but I still found them really valuable and interesting, even though they tend to focus on limit HE as well as the other variants
