What style of play is your top choice for a WSOP event nlhe large field ? Is it a shove fest or something more along the lines of small ball?

Take a look at the structures and you can answer your own questions.

The structures of the WSOP events vary so much that I think it doesn't make sense to look at it that way.

For the main event, many really great players I've watched small ball it. They know that good opportunities will come if they just don't make pots too big without nutted hands. The structure is that good they don't need to 3bet a lot or create opportunities. They just need to wait for those opportunities to come and they should.

But in general you just need to look at stack sizes, blinds, structure, and players at your table and then come up with a strategy based on the situation. I find that my results have been much better when I have no strategy. I react to what I see at the table. If I see players playing in a certain way, I just come up with strategies to play hands against them. Some players I'll purposefully avoid and others I will go out of my way to play hands against. But it's really dependent on stack sizes, structure, and other players.

I think it doesn't make sense to have a style of play other than generally being aggressive and making "good" decisions. The most important thing you can do is be patient and play what you've been dealt. If you are at a super passive table, you can open a ton. If you are at a super aggressive table you may just have to play less hands and trap more. Don't try to create opportunities that don't exist. You will see obvious spots to make plays if you are patient and observant. Have a plan for how you play against every player at the table and I think that makes the most sense.

E.g., some tournaments I want to open a ton but there's a laggy calling station who will not let me cbet and take the pot down ever. If they are on the button, I'll only raise with bigger hands because I feel like I'll burn money playing against them.

Maybe there's a hyper aggressive player in the big blind. I may play more hands against them if in position and just try to trap them more. I will rarely try to bluff another super aggressive player. I'll just wait for them to trap themselves.

My best results have always come when I just paid attention to the action on every hand and have a game plan that is specific to each player I am in a hand with. Early on I play tighter and just observe. Over time I open up my game if it makes sense or I just keep playing tight until it makes more sense to switch things up.

All of this may sound super obvious but I really believe reacting to other players and how they play is a much better strategy than any pre-thought out strategy you could come up with.
