I'm really sorry to hear that; I hope surgery goes well. Re: programming, unfortunately I am now a cardiobunny DYEL, so I have nothing to offer.

Good to see you posting, but sorry to hear about your injury.

I think you're on the right track with the exercises you're suggesting. Just listen to your body and avoid doing anything that doesn't feel right.

Thanks guys. I got an mri and it was torn meniscus, sprained acl/mcl and no surgery. I went for my follow up today and he said I could resume bjj and lifting. When he was checking my knee he noticed my hip was tight so he had me do an X-ray because he thought it was a congenital bone issue. He got the X-ray back and said I’ll need double hip replacement most likely. Scheduled to meet with the surgeon in 2 weeks. Have arthritis in the hips, bone Spurs, and what ever congenital thing he mentioned. At least maybe I’ll get rid of this hip pain. I’ve had it since I compete with cha back in I think 2013 or 14

I would explore every other option before doing any joint replacement surgery. I know people who have done this and they have regrets. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

Damn, seem kind of young for that. But i looked it up and apparently its common.

Looks like you wont be able to become a champion runner anymore but certainly can still be a champion rower or cyclist. Not sure about lifting.

So I had my follow up yesterday. I do need 2 hip replacements. I guess it’s from playing goalie as a kid. He recommends me just dealing with the pain if I want to stay active and just get the replacements when it’s too painful or the mobility is too bad. He also said they are too far gone to do anything besides replacement. I gues my labrums calcified and I have bone Spurs everywhere so mobility work or ART won’t help.

He also said to quit lifting and just do cardio. He said I could do jiu jitsu but it will speed up the need for replacements.

I found a guy who specializes in hip replacements in Oregon who did his internship or whatever it’s called at John’s Hopkins and is a brown belt in bjj and lifts so i want to get a second opinion from him. The doc I saw said I could do bjj after replacement but he would advise against it because I’d be at a higher risk for dislocations and infections.

Any one have any advice?

I'm not a doctor, but anytime a doc says "stop lifting", I would run like hell away from him and never go back. I have heard **** like that several times from shitty docs in my life. I found some good ones and will never follow the advice of a doc like that again, especially one who would profit from cutting me open.

Find a different doctor who lifts and is a hip expert. The guy you mention might be good. I'll check with a couple doc friends of mine to see what they think too.

Agree with the Cha. Especially since what the heck do we need hips for to row, bench, and pullup/pushup. Also some lowerbody exercises that should be okay (extensions/curls, etc etc). No lifting? Wat.

First doc says get a 2nd opinion. He knows a great hip guy in MN. If you want to come here, I will get you his info. I will let you know when I hear from others, but I am guessing they're all going to echo similar things.

Thanks cha. I will see how it goes with the bjj guy in Oregon buy That sounds pretty good if he’s recommended to you

Cha,

Also I’ve been doing tbdl and above parallel box squats since I have limited mobility in my hips. Also super narrow stance to relieve pain. Does that sound good to you. To just do what doesn’t hurt abs what I’m able to with my bad hip mobility?

I don't know anything about him - I just know what you said about him, which sounds a lot better than the guy you went to first.

yeah, listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, don't do it.

I got replies from two other doctors. This first one sounds like a realistic thing for you to try:

"....there is a PT in California who wrote a book called Pain Free. Basically his approach is to prescribe certain static positions to allow the body to realign itself via gravity. There are other clinics that espouse the same philosophy via certification. There are multiple positions once the patients issues are identified. It's very effective and I have prescribed many of his positions over the years . Therefore I would recommend looking up Peter Egosque. Pain free clinic."

I'd do this first if I were in your shoes^

This other guy is an MD who is a regenerative medicine expert. He could probably fix your issues with a combination of regenerative injections, chiropractic work (not him, an associate) and MAT (Muscle Activation Technique, again not him, an associate). Here's what he said,
"Hips are tough. Takes a very head broad and deep approach and probably a year of work. A lot of neurological work. MAT. Chiropractic. Mind/heart. Physiology. The whole package."
If I had unlimited resources and time, I'd jump all over this^. This guy has fixed or helped a lot of my injury issues. He's also worked on several friends and my wife who have also had great success. He's a pioneer in regenerative medicine with more experience at it than almost anyone and he is always pushing the cutting edge of it, figuring out new, better ways to do it. People come from all over the world to get treated by him. One powerlifter friend of mine who lives in FL came up to MN for a week in January and got treated by him and his associates over the course of the week. She got great results. She said two years later that if she could do it over knowing what she knows now, she would do it again.

I also asked my PT who is super knowledgeable. She has not replied yet.

The higher belts and guys that started bjj in my gym later in life have a lot of hip problems and they basically just do 3 things that many of them say have kept them from getting hip replacements:

They live in the couch stretch/kstarr hip stretch position and try to do the stretch very aggressively. They accumulate like 30 minutes on each side a day and probably even more.

They spend a lot of time in that pigeon yoga position but are super careful not put shear on their already messed up knees.

They use a lacrosse ball or the pso-rite dealies and massage the front of the hip/it band/etc

I have done all that and it really helps but I like these too.

I use a heavy KB 70lbs plus for this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyrKX6igUFs

and these are the most complicated but easily the best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5c-WMwGEqU

Whoa, long time since I posted. I’m still training bjj and lifting. I train bjj like 20-25 hours a week and right down I’m doing Dan John’s easy strength for fat loss cause I have to lose like 8 lbs for bjj master worlds on September 1. It’s just iron neck, 3x3 dl, chins, kb press, and 5 rounds of what he calls a humane burpee which is 15kb swings, 5 goblet squats, 5 pushups then I go for a 45 min walk.

My elbows need surgery so I have a hard time pressing so my pushing strength is way down

I started trt like 5 months ago and feel very good. Martin licis, the 2019 world’s strongest man started training bjj at my gym. He is insane to roll with. Insanely big and he’s small for a strongman. I went to his gym and did a strongman workout with him coaching the moves. We did log press, where I did 135x5, sand bag carry where I did 190, couldn’t get 228, and stone over bar where I did 5 reps of 160 in 1 minute. Elbows kind of held me back B on everything but it was insanely fun martins is obv the big guy in pink. The guy to the right of him is 275lbs lol

Good to hear from you. You're looking great. TRT is a good thing for most of us older guys.

I assume the hip issues got corrected by rehab exercises?

What's wrong with the elbows?

Are you 40 now? Probably should have gone on clomid first, a bit young for the trt.

I rage at 1000ng/dl on 25mg clomid. So does not compute to go on trt.

But maybe difficult to find clomid in usa and get prescribed. Could always go to TJ and pick up 3 months supply for less than 100 bucks.

Cha,

Mri showed I have loose bodies in both elbows so I can’t straighten them out bent them all the way

Loco,

I’m 42. My total test after 3 months was > 1500 and my free test was 26

Bummer. Sounds like surgery is the only solution for that - hope that goes (or went) well for you!

Nice!

Free T is the only number that really matters. That is the T that your body uses. 26 is excellent.
