Imo there is a good chance that whatever his knees are doing is not what your knees are actually doing. I'd liken it to rounding parts of one's back DLing. At least I suspect this. Most people who aren't DLing...oh, I dno, 500+ and claim their upper back rounding is part of their technique probably aren't protecting the rest of their back properly or truly getting tight. The actual guys "getting away with this" have a lot of experience and are very strong.
