I've been smoking cigars for the better part of three decades. The best way is to try a lot of different cigars, pair them with coffee or liquor, and make sure you have ample time set aside to properly enjoy it.
There are some great samplers available online, I usually use cigars international despite the hokey marketing they have really good deals. They also have some junk so you have to research sometimes.
Much like wine, price is only loosely positively correlated with quality, so don't be afraid to try some of the more inexpensive cigars. For example I enjoy the rocky Patel Connecticut wrapped Churchills and they are currently only $30 for ten.
If you find a cigar you like, try other cigars that manufacturer make too.
