last time i went white water rafting i fell out of the rafts right at the start of some category 5 or some chit, spent 2 minutes getting sucked under by the current and hitting rocks.
cliffs: damn nature you scary
I've been white water rafting twice. Summer of '02 and '03, I want to say. Both times in Maine with a bunch of friends. We didn't do class 5. Mostly 3s and some 4s. First time I got bounced in a pretty scary spot where I got flipped over the end, then the raft landed on me, but the rapid was strong enough that it just sucked me out. I was young and full of zest for life then so it was awesome and I had a great time. The second trip me and a friend of mine both got bounced on an initial twelve foot waterfall drop. We were both in the back. But that was into a calm pool at the bottom. The rest of the rafting experience was great. You're with friends, you're with a competent guide giving instructions the whole time, and if something happens you have people trying to save your ass.
This was white water tubing. Like this:
It is beyond stupid. Look at that poor sap who's off his tube. He's right ****ed.
The rapids weren't bad (class 1s and class 2s), but you don't really have much control in a god damn tube. There's no guide or anything, they just rent you the tube and life jacket and helmet (which is optional for some bizarre reason), and drop you in the river. It was a water release day plus it started pouring right when we got in, so it was pretty fast. Lots and lots of rocks and debris and fallen trees.
The problem is lack of control and stability. You can control yourself OK before you hit the rapids, but once you do you have to hold onto the handles in order to not lose the tube. And then your only real control is shifting your weight instinctively. You will get flipped. And then you're ****ed.
I got flipped 3 times I think. Definitely at least 2. The first time was up on a big rock that the rapid pushed me into. Many people got flipped here. I smashed my shin pretty badly then. The other times weren't as bad but once was in the middle of the river and if I were a worse swimmer I probably wouldn't have gotten to the banks before the next set of rapids. That woulda sucked.
There was one girl on our trip who def bailed like a quarter of a way down the river and cut through someone's yard and walked back. I lel'd.
My injury list is:
- Left shin contusion. Quite swollen. Moderate pain when walking.
- Something muscular in the left adductor near the knee, not far from where I smashed it. Probably related.
- Bruised tailbone from all the rocks.
- minor cuts and scrapes on my hands.
- Minor bruising on my left ankle.
My abs are also sore because you're in a permanent crunch position for about 75 minutes.
