Processed foods = anything done industrially that you couldn't easily do to food yourself. So a bag of pre-cut apples is fine, but anything containing flour or sugar or corn syrup is out. Fruits, meats, veg, nuts, etc. all good.

There are a few borderline areas.

Olive oil - I would classify as "unprocessed" for this purpose, but margarine, shortening, etc. are obviously "processed"

Oats - if you like you can classify rolled oats as processed and steel cut as unprocessed. More generally for grains, true unmilled whole grains like quinoa or brown rice are in the borderline category and you can allow or not.

I'm not saying anything about what amount of protein or carb you should eat, that depends on your physical activity and what you're trying to do to your body.

can i see a list of common "processed foods" ? that could be replaced with common "non-processed foods"?

I don't know if there are "replacements" for everything. Sometimes it's just a matter of eliminating certain foods.

Here's a few ideas: Processed on the left - unprocessed on the right.

Fruit Juice - Fruit
Soda Pop - Water
Sandwich - Meat and vegetables
Vegetable Oil - Olive Oil
Breakfast cereal - Eggs and Bananas
Table sugar - Dates, raisins or any fruit
Snack Chips - raw nuts
Popcicles - frozen fruit
Cake - Fruit, nut butters
Chicken McNuggets - Chicken
Gatorade - Fruit, Water and maybe salt

Just some ideas. You could argue that olive oil, raisins and nut butters are processed, but imo they are close enough to be OK.

As mentioned earlier, no one eats unprocessed 100% of the time. It's not practical or might not even be possible in an industrial society. But I think you'll find that the closer you stick to unprocessed foods, the better you will feel and the easier it will be to reach your weight goals (if you're goal is to lose or maintain).

life's too short not to enjoy it. have that big ass bowl once in a while. i would never do paleo strictly, tho i pretty much eat that way most of the time. life without the occasional eclair, chocolate souffle, cheesecake, 5 Guys meal is just not worth living

I like big bowls of cereal too, and along with pastries they were really hard to give up. I know AJ uses cereal as a PWO food. But I don't have the self control to limit my food intake like that. If it's in my house, I'm eating it. So I just don't have those things unless I'm at a friend's house or out for a special occasion.

There's more than one reason to avoid processed foods. But the big one for me is that it's just so easy to eat lots and lots of them. It's hard for me to overeat if I limit myself to paleo-ish food. Very easy to overeat with processed food.

so true. which is why i can't keep the stuff in my apartment either. a box of cookies in my apartment would last maybe one night. but try overeating, say, tuna or apples, and it's not very easy.

on this diet, would whey protein be "allowed"? Isn't it processed?

Out of all diets, this makes the most sense. It is easy to stick to. No matter what nutricional "science" says, it fails to recognize that dieters fail 95% of the time because of the odd-ball demands they are supposed to follow. Eliminating pre-fab food is a huge step in the right direction. I eat sort of like this. My cieling is about 150 lbs and that is okay for me. I eat like a pig and no worries really.

What about replacing cereal with granola that's in a bag? Not the bars.

No they're pretty much the same thing. Read the ingredients, I've seen lots of granola mixes that have more sugar per serving than frosted flakes. See the posts earlier regarding oats if you want something cereal like.

Also, I think, if you're looking to gain weight it'll probably be pretty hard to do eating this way. Unless you eat lots of fruits and drink lots of milk.

I don't completely eliminate processed stuff. I love cereal and I love crackers and peanut butter, and pastries, et al. I guess I can get away with easier than most.

Not all cereals are created equal, either. Eating a bowl of Cheerios, Total, or Grape Nuts is a lot better (or not nearly as bad, depending how you look at it) than a bowl of Trix, Lucky Charms, or Coco Puffs.
