i used to do all of the lifts i am now doing on my slightly modified SS routine and i would not consider myself a novice in any of them. i didnt do squats tho, so i feel like im still making regular (weekly) gains in that. all my other lifts have been at the same numbers for like two months.

ive been doing SS for like two months. should i move on to something like texas method or some other intermediate routine?

If it's modified it isn't Starting Strength.

If it's not working it's time to do it properly.

If it's been done properly, it's time to do something else.

How could you possibly make weekly progress on a program that progresses workout to workout?

So none of your lifts ever improved? What is your weight / height / bench / squat / deadlift and what was it when you started?

Kinda need to know this.

Novice/intermediate designation is based on recovery ability, not the numbers of the lifts, but if you're squatting 200 or whatever, you're probably doing something wrong that you can fix before you need to move on.

im 6'1, 183.

squat now 3x5x260; when i started 3x5x195, but i was re-learning the movement and holding back a little.

bench now 3x5x230; same when i started

i dont do deadlifts. the risk-to-value ratio is too high for me given my lower back's historic proneness to injury. i know everyone will hate on it and act like SS is worthless without the deadlift, but i think its the right choice to sub it for something else for me. keep in mind that in SS you do ONE SET of deadlift a week.

as for progressing on a weekly basis on a program that progresses on a workout basis, i can add weight, but it's not making me stronger. i can put 235 on the bar for bench and get a couple sets of four and maybe a triple. then i can put 240 on next time and do worse. i dont think its progress.

basically i dont know if im training the other (not squat) lifts too often or not often enough. im guessing i need to move on to programs with volume/recovery days, but i wanted to make sure.

Do Starting Strength properly. Eat more. Start with humility, choose weights that are 80% (or lower) from your personal best. Do the warm-ups. If you start with your squat around 180 lbs (or lower) you should have no problems working through your plateau. Focus on performing the lifts technically correctly. Eat. More. Increase the lifts as you are supposed to. Don't miss any. Start your dead lift at something minuscule like 130 lbs, add 5 lbs each workout. Your back will heal. Eat. Don't do extra ****. Rest properly. Recovery is where the real work gets done. Eat extra ****. Drink your milk.

Come back in 3 months.

Well to be serious: you can either start eating more (and getting tons of sleep) and do the program or move on. If you worry about body fat I don't see a huge point in pounding tons of food to squeeze out some more gains.
