Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Tuesday 10th- 196.0lbs

2900cals

First Fire session of the year.. felt really off the pace. and despite aaallll the throwing I've been doing didnt' feel very confident in it yet.. just getting it in use in games I guess

The overriding msg I'm taking from tonight is I need to try stay out of my own head a bit better, I was told a few years ago by a high level player that I was a 'confidence player'.. at the time I didn't understand what he meant but I think I do now.

10day TED streak.

Thursday 12th- 197.0lbs

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Friday 13th, like 3kcals

Saturday 14th, like 2.9kcals

Had my first trial of the season with Kpow! Quick trial report;

First thing to say was taht I really enjoyed it, the intensity and competiviness, had a cracking time.. which really answered one of the questions I'd been wondering lately about whether its worth it.. how much training I do, the sprints, the conditioning, the gym.. after days like today, I'm pumped, and feel proud of the way I prepared and thus was able to perform.

Throwing around with one of the Brixton guys who was also attending to start the session for 10mins, I felt sharp, throws were crisp, feeling confident.

We started off with full pitch games, this was frustrating coz I felt good, felt like I was moving well, was getting into the right spaces.. but didn't seem to get thrown to.. don't think it was anything in particular, playing with a group that I don't know is gonna have that happen.. even though I was a little frustrated, I knew I was doing alot right and felt good and confident.

First drill was a breakmark drill.. My force was really really good, I got like 6 pointblocks.. having a good force is in a big way tied to conditioning, its just about being able to completely concentrate and focus especially when you start getting tired.. my breakthrows were fine.. not very good, not bad either

Next drill was defending a cutter in a space in front of the disc.. I completely bossed this.. in my group of like 10 guys, I think my defence was easily the best there.. one of the other guys commented on that to me afterwards, how much its improved.. which is nice to hear someone else say, he's known me for like 3years so can tell the development.

Last was a lead pass drill.. I was pretty happy with this, again not brilliant, but good enough to be slightly above the average level of throwing that was on display.. saying that, a couple of my backhand shots were sick good.

Then we had a break, then we started on 3v3 full field mini- this was the point last year where my game, confidence and in particular throwing completely fell apart.. today i did well, playing with two experienced players, I was the deep threat most of the time.. I did throw one pretty nice flickhuck to one of the guys.. but mostly I was running down the hucks..

Full game, 7v7, pretty much no subs.. I was sooo gassed after the mini, but still did pretty well here.. scored lots of points by timing my deep cuts, threw one especially sexy flickhuck that hit the receiver in stride..

This was probably one of, if not the, toughest session of ultimate I've ever played, the full field mini took so much out of me, and everyone I think.. and then playing games with no subs.. it was really really tough.. but I feel my conditioning paid off and I kept up... and my throwing was fine, I wouldn't say a strong point, but definetly not a glaring weakness.. which I think it was last year.. have been throwing 33/37 days leading up to this trial, which is pretty damn good imo..

Overall I'm really happy with how it went, most importantly I really enjoyed it, and do feel vilified in all the training I've done and sacrifices I've made.. Next Kpow trial is in 2 weeks, 29th Jan, then theres an invite only wkend which I hope and think I've done enough to get asked to.. depending on the next session too..

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Just popped in your log - noticed you're listing daily macros. Didn't go back too far but are you just tracking or are you aiming for targets? I'm getting some help with my macros and I started 200 lbs and my targets are 245c, 70f, 185p. While I believe I'm being targeted to shed a few lbs (now weigh 196) I believe a lot of my shed is due to lower fat (could tell on day 1 when planning my food how little 70g was for me).

Cliffs: could your carbs be a bit too low? maybe some days (non workout) by design but I've seen a few days you log around 100 or barely over. Maybe that could help you a bit? just my quick, non-expert opinion. If you're recovering & performing fine maybe a non issue for you.

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Hey Droopy- I've never looked into it in great detail, but my uneducated impression was that hitting fat and protein goals is important, and just filling in the rest of the cals with carbs as needed is fine..

Edit; just remembered i made this thread a couple of years ago to ask about exactly this!

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

What I'm being told is hitting protein & carbs before/after working out is helpful and fats away from workout. Also for me, cutting fats in general and bumping protein a bit and carbs a smidge will be helpful. Sounds like you're feeling good on the field and your weight has dropped (which was your intention)....so my commenting might be more relevant to my interests than yours. GL!

Went to Brixton, like 45mins throwing practice, a couple of drills and a really low quality game, we picked up a couple of beginners, so it was pretty much a turnfest.. my intensity was somewhere about the 30% mark, got another trail tomorrow.. I probably shouldn't have gone in the first place but it is nice to catch up with some old friends, so to only go for that is not bad.

I led a breakforce drill and.. again.. I seem to have 'lost' my flick.. Even though today was day 44 of my throwing fest, having only missed 4 days in that block.. Of course I'm completely aware that its all in my head.. and theres's no use thinking about it or stressing, it'll come back quickly and all will be fine again.. So the focus for the rest of today is to absolutely not think about ultimate.. just think about anything else, anything at all.. and not worry, got a trial 2mo for a new mixed team, my expectations of actually making the team are very low.. and I'm not sure I'd play for them anyway if I were given the chance.. so just chill

Gonna watch the GodfatherI, would like to get watch through those 3, do some reading and play guitar for a bit too.

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Sunday 22nd- 192.6lbs

3600cals.. had a pizza after the trial, standard post-trial celebration

It went okay, not amazing, not nearly as well as last week.. the standard was much higher, and somehow I never got that into it.. not sure why.. part of it was that it was a mixed team, and I realised I'm not a huge fan of playing mixed.. subconsciously I'm always thinking about how physical I'm being when I'm marking a girl, or get randomly matched up in a scrimmage.. and i kinda get inside my own head a little.. I prefer to just go and play with guys, no thinking involved, just get out there and smash it

My throwing was pretty ok.. when I think about it throwing a forehand it goes to pot, but if I dont think too much its not bad.. I did have one absolute dime of a flickhuck today, last point of the game, must have been 40/50yards..

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Monday
3kcals
throwing alone, 30mins

Tuesday
3.6kcals

Last Fire open session before trials start, session went fine.. did a hucking drill to start, where I did ok, not very good nor bad.. then games.. didn't touch the disc very much.. not sure why.. didn't throw any turns but

Wednesday
3.3kcals
40mins throwing alone, throwing long lead passes

Thursday
4.8kcals.. bit of a meltdown day.. picked up a pizza and some chicken strips on the way home from work..

Also skipped my throwing, for lots of little reasons.. none of them definitive, I obv could have gone.. but.. throwing buddy is injured, so would have to be throwing alone, its really cold out, still tired from getting home late from Tuesday's session, forgot my food for the day this morning in the fridge so was unusually hungry after work.. etc etc.

Been a 14day TED streak, start again 2mo.

Friday

4700cals

Massive cheat day.. even broke my 23day streak of no confectionary.. and had a couple of beers..
Seems to be a pattern where I have a meltdown the day before a trial.. maybe something to do with being nervous..
Didn't throw either.

Anyway, Flump trial today and 2nd Kpow one tomorrow, feeling ok.. if a little overweight/bloated..

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Flump trial feedback

Throwing beforehand, feeling really good, despite the 2day break, my partner is a decent player that I've seen around and he's struggling to complete the upwind passes, when we switch I'm completing them no problem.

Start off with no circle or introduction, straight into a warmup.. I already knew a few ppl there but I thought this was a pretty big oversight by the coaches, to get everyone assimilated and together to talk about the session, and introduce each other.

First drill was a dump defender drill.. i didn't think it was set up very well, with the cut automatically going up the line, even though the D could set up wherever they like.. in a game if the D is standing off me there's no way I'd run up the line there.. anyway, once I figured out this drill my D was excellent, as standard, O cutting pretty good too.

Next was a hucking drill.. which was set up in the stupidest way possible... 2stacks, one at each end of the field, and we were hucking straight into/over the opposite stack, so the runner had to keep his eyes on the disc without ploughing into someone going the opposite way.. literally the stupidest way to set up a drill I've ever seen, I almost told the coach I was gonna sit it out coz it was too dangerous.. anyway, my throwing was pretty good.

5v5mini, I pwned it pretty hard, scored like 3 of our points, threw 1.. killing it on D...BUT ... it was here my old doubts came back to haunt me.. taht ******* flick.. like.. it makes absolutely no sense, I can huck it no problem, and throwing with a partner is fine, but completing a short pass in a game situation, the disc can come out all wobbly.. so that happened a few times.. though I did complete a few good ones too..

Full game at the end.. played well, was involved well.. scored alot of our points.

Summary- I was probably the fittest player in attendance, probably one of, if not the, best on D, there were only 20 ppl there but.. the standard was noticably lower than the previous trials I've been to, which makes sense as Flump are like the bottom of Atour, the other teams I'm trialling for are closer to the top.. In term of throwing today I was probably one of the average guys there.. which is an improvement.. had the idea that I should see a sports psychologist about my flick issue if it doens't go away.

Overall, if it were based purely on ability, I think I'm a slamdunk to make this team.. but I can only make 2/4 of their trials, and I shamefully dropped out of a tournament I was supposed to be playing with them last year, so not sure if they'll want me given my questionable commitment to them..

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Update;
Had Kpow trial the day after Flump, absolutely stuffed it, just couldn't get past this mental block, which manifested itself especially in my throwing forehand ability.. didn't get invited back..

Have started reading the Inner Game of Tennis, a book about mental toughness, seems pretty good..
Have spent the last week on the couch mostly, been sick and off work..

Am supposed to have Fire trial 2mo but don't know if I'm up for it.. its so frustrating to not be able to play the way I should after so much training.. and I don't see myself getting over this mental block.. yet.. so it'd probably just be a frustrating experience.. so atm i'm thinking Flump would be a good gradual stepup, if I make it, as its an Atour team.. but the bottom of Atour, and I'd be less nervous about playing with them.. it'd be like a stepping stone for next year, when I'd have more experience of high level ultimate, and thus be more confident, to trial with the top teams again..

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Did go to Fire trials today, after considering it for quite a long time..
Played Brixton pickup in the morning, which was really chill and fun

Then at Fire we did 5 drills, 1 about taking a high disc agaisnt another player, which I was really good at.. surprising myself.. 2 were about timing of cuts and working together, I did very well at both of these.. and then 2 were throwing focused, and I did much less well.. Especially in the breakmark drill, I tried to throw one flick and it literally spannered out of my hand into the turf.. but my big pivot backhand break was really good.. the other was a hucking drill.. i seemed to lose confidence as it went on, got worse and worse, especially when we started throwing forehands..

also played mini and full games.. both of which were kinda ok, I was able to play and avoid throwing flicks very much.. I threw one scoober huck in mini, which someone on the sideline described as 'visionary', lol.. and threw one backhand huck in the game which one of the captains was on my team and said it was really sweet..

Had a quick word with the captain at the end, mentioned how I've been working hard on my throwing but it seems to fall apart when I get nervous.. he gave me a technical tip about dipping my left shoulder as I pivot across to throw the flick, to stop all the rotation having to come from my shoulder.. so that might help.. will experiment with it..

My mentality was actually pretty good today, readin and watching videos about mental toughness has been a help.. kept focusing on my breathing as a way to quiet my mind, and tried to block out any of the unhelpful negative thoughts and doubts.. Even when I couldn't throw a flick during the breakmark drill, I thought about it in a very emotionally detached way and decided to use my lefty backhand and big pivot IO backhand to get around it, which kinda worked..

I'd be pretty shocked if they took me given the impression they've got of my throwing, but at least I was positive in my thinking and attitude, which is good.

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Haven't been doing much training the last week or more, been a little disappointed at how trial season is turning out for me.. diet has taken a hit too.. played Brixton pickup yday and had several huge grabs in the air, which was sweet

Flump trial today, I did well in most aspects, including a throwing drill and a variation of mini.. but threw two turns in the full pitch game, had been called as a handler and was trying to throw a flick both times..

Re: Road to Worlds 2020

Have decided thats enough of feeling sorry for myself, back on the wagon and dedicate my training to the first tournament coming up, Mixed Tour1, on 1st/2nd April. Will be playing with Brixton, and we'll be in the bottom 10% of teams there.. but whatevs, should be fun, and gives me a concrete goal to train for. Have got one more Flump trial left on the 25th, trying not to get too into my own head about it..

Plan is TED, gym 2x a week, track 2x a week.

Was in the gym for first time in ages yday, did;
Donkey kicks
SL Hip raises
Pullups- 5,5,5
Vertical hopnstick
stir the pot
KB swings- 3x10x16kg
OHP- 45kg
Split squat- 20kg DBs

Today was track day;
20mins rolling
Usual sprtint form drills
2x4x10yard sprints, 3point start and falling start.

Some crossover progressions

Then HIIT; 3x6x25yard sprints, 1:2 work:rest ratio, felt fine.

Throwing, did a little wide pivoting, also threw a few long lead passes.. wide pivots feel pretty solid, lead passes still need some work..

Also will be trying to lose weight again.. I'm such a slob, anytime my morale dips the first thing I do is overeat.

Today is my fifth day in a row of throwing so far.

Flying to Scotland for a few days to chill, and then play an indoor tournament with Brixton at the wkend, so will be hard to log food but will try to be sensible anyway.

6 1/2 weeks until MT1!
