Yup. Title says it all. I don't have any goals. I don't have a program. I don't really care if I gain or lose weight. I'm currently 35 years old, 6 feet tall, and about 205 lbs. When I was 30, I did Starting Strength and went from 165 lbs to 215 lbs. My personal records were: lbbs 225x3x5, bench 165x3x5, ohp 125x3x5, dl 270x1x5, pc 145x5x3, chins 6, 4, 2, fail. I didn't lift for years after that, but I had a physically demanding job that gave me a workout most days. Then last year, my supervisor had a heart attack. He's ok now, but we both lost our jobs. So last summer I started throwing around the weights a bit. I tagged along to a planet fitness with a friend. I worked up the squats to 135x3x5 and messed around a bit on the bench. I worked out in the driveway a handful of times after that. I would warm up with bw squats and then mix in some powercleans and front squats. Then I'd take some weight off and do some powercleans and ohp. I made some very modest progress last summer. I don't have much weight to work with. I have a skinny bar and only 137 lbs worth of weights. Of course, I could buy a decent bar and more weight, but I just wanna break a sweat and have fun doing it.

Welcome to my log.

It's raining and I'm bored so I thought I'd add a little more detail.

I haven't touched the weights since last September, but I plan to mess around in the driveway in the near future.

I've been working on my jumper at the local park a lot lately. I tweaked my foul shot form a bit and have had good results. Previously, I had been shooting flat footed. My results had been on the decline for years from the stripe. I decided to add some calf contraction a la the great Ray Allen. Now, I'm a little bit higher with my follow through, which makes for more swishes and less front rimming. I also have been doing some other drills, including a hard two dribble drive from the top of the key to both elbows, followed by a pull up jumper. I've been hitting that shot a lot lately, though I haven't had a chance to play any real ball yet this summer.

I hope to get a few shots in later today if this rain stops.

I'm currently injury free and feeling great. My left knee does bother me sometimes. I dislocated it when I was 22 and it's never been 100% since. I have to wrap it up when I do high impact stuff like skiing. The warmth created by wrapping it up is all the difference imo. I don't wrap it for light impact stuff.

Also, my left glute medius was mostly seized for a period of ~7 years thanks to wearing a tool belt too much and golfing. The result was years of sciatica, a partially seized left lumbar, lots of tfl tension, and generally feeling like **** on my left side. Lots of massage, streching, and lifting made the difference here along with quitting golf and not wearing a tool belt anymore. It still seizes up sometimes, but it hasn't been a chronic problem muscle for me in the past few years.

Besides that, I'm 100%, whatever that means.

----

I suppose my diet could be better. I don't eat many veggies. I'm on meds that make my cholesterol levels worse and my dad's side of the family has a long history of circulatory system and heart problems. On top of that, I'm a heavy smoker. I drink often. So it's safe to say that I'm quite unhealthy. Shrug.

Here's an excerpt from my "Poker Goals n Challenges" thread with some rambling free of charge:

I haven't played any poker since my last update. Instead, I've been drinking lots of beer, eating lots of steak, working on my jumper, and generally having a great time.

A good friend of mine is coaching a summer league basketball team and she asked me to tag along one of these days. So tomorrow night I'm gonna help out at a practice with some of my favorite shooting and dribbling drills that I think can help improve scoring abilities. I have <2 years experience playing organized basketball, but I have tons of experience scoring on average defenders on the blacktop. This is my plan that I posted in the health and fitness forum's basketball thread:

Quote:
I'm lending a hand coaching 13 year old kids on Monday night. I'm pretty sure the coach is gonna let me take the guards aside so I can have them do some dribbling and shooting drills. I have very little experience with organized basketball, but lots of experience scoring on average playground opponents. I'm going to start with an emphasis on the triple threat, from which most scoring opportunities present themselves. Imo it's all about what the defender is giving you as the potential scorer. This means driving hard when the defender takes away the outside shot and pull up jumpers from ~10-15 feet when they take away the drive. Working on driving with both left and right hands is really important imo, so I'll probably have them do a lot of that.

For shooting, I'll have them start off with some foul shots to check form. Then we'll move it back to the top of the key with a big emphasis on getting the legs into the shot. I'd also like to see how they do with catching passes with a shooting grip and squaring up nicely before shooting. Footwork will be the emphasis as I don't really care if they make many of these shots.

Dribbling will be lots of figure eights getting as low as possible as I think this is the best drill for improving hand eye ball coordination. I'm thinking we should do this before they start to get tired because technical stuff is best improved with fresh muscles. So maybe immediately after the foul shots.

How does my plan sound?

In my eyes, there are a lot of similarities between poker and basketball. In both games, you gotta take what the defense is giving you. Of course, the execution of a plan is much easier in poker and you have lots of time to effect a strategy. In basketball, you gotta think quickly and act quickly. However, the exploitation of an opponent is the ultimate goal. Even great defenders must execute or be exploited on the court. Much like in poker, where even great opponents will have exploitable tendencies that we can exploit.

My favorite baseball player of all time, Greg Maddux, once said that he can spot the slightest changes in a batter's approach. If the batter crowded the plate in the slightest bit, Greg would spot it. He'd throw that knuckle curve right at the batter's face. Then, if the batter adjusted by backing off the plate even the slightest bit, Greg would paint the outside corner with a very modest fastball that flew at around 87 miles per hour. Some high school kids throw faster than that, but Greg was such a master of pitching that just a slight difference in speeds between his fastball and change up, combined with masterful control, made things very difficult for batters. So you might have the intellectual equivalent of a 100mph fastball, but without masterful control of that intellect, you're gonna end up leaving money on the table.

I'm going to the practice tomorrow night as well.

I just shot around at the park in the rain for a bit. Now I feel great. The foul shot form tweaking is definitely working and is becoming habit. I definitely hit my share of threes today, though the nba range three pointer was off. The pull up jumper was falling too.

The left knee didn't wanna play today though, probably because of the moisture in the air. For this reason, I didn't take any pull up jumpers from the left elbow.

I should probably squat asap to get the knee stronger, maybe tomorrow if it's not raining.

I think the heat and lack of air conditioning got to me yesterday due to a lack of sleep the night before. I stayed up late playing online poker and posting here on 2+2 until about 2:30am. Then I woke up around 7am and stayed up. 4:30pm came around and I got really drowsy. I took a nap until just after 7pm, at which point participating in a basketball practice sounded awful. I skipped the practice, but I hope to make it next week.

Haven't broke a sweat in over a week. My physical and mental health have most likely deteriorated some in the past week due to some inner conflict that I just can't wrap my mind around at the moment.

Maybe I'll force myself to shoot around today.

I shot around a bit today. The 18 footer was working, but I only hit maybe 1/5 three pointers. I didn't stay long cus I didn't eat any breakfast or lunch.

Had prime rib for dinner, which I was pretty psyched about.

Hello health and fitness forum. I've been a bum since June, but am going to work out today.

A friend offered to buy me a membership to a local gym if I agreed to lift with her 14 year old son regularly. I was hesitant because that's a big investment of time, but I finally accepted the offer. He's a giant standing ~6 feet tall at just 14 years old. His feet are bigger than mine, yet I have ~60 pounds on the kid. I'm going to teach him how to lift in the ways of the great Mark Rippetoe, the author of "Starting Strength," which I recommend to anyone looking to get into strength training. We're gonna squat, bench, and deadlift today. Then we take a day off for rest and recovery. Then on Tuesday, we squat, overhead press, and deadlift. After a while, all the deadlifting will become too much of a workload to include it in every workout. So at that point we will mix in some chinups and pullups on odd days. I'm not sure, but I think that the gym we are going to is anti olympic lifts. So we will not be mixing in any powercleans in the near future, which I think is a bummer. However, I am looking forward to moving some weight because, as Henry Rollins would say, "200 pounds won't lie to you to make you happy like your friends will." The iron is honest in that way.

I'd look into GSLP after the first few months. SS is absolutely horrid past 6-9 months and likely to become injurious.

Thanks. I have yet to stall on squat even once, so that's pretty far away but looking at intermediate programming options can't hurt.

Would you recommend that for the 14 year old as well or can he expect linear gains as long as he keeps growing?

I broke a sweat today and figured I'd update this.

My friend recently cut down some trees and had a bunch of logs that needed splitting. I find splitting wood to be fun, so I offered to split it for her. I worked for two hours and split a bunch of logs with my ax, sledgehammer, and wedge.

I worked up a nice sweat doing it and I think it was pretty good exercise.

As you may have guessed by the lack of updates, the 14 year old backed out of the gym thing, so that's not gonna happen. However, I do plan to workout in the driveway in the near future.

I chopped up about a 1/2 cord of wood on Friday night and Saturday morning. Worked up a good sweat. Luckily, I'm not sore at all today despite being 36 years old and well out of shape.

Also, I've lost about 18 pounds in the past year thanks to eating less. I still have a bit of a beer gut, which probably isn't going to go away without some regular exercise. I'm down from 220 to 202.

I broke a good sweat today by shooting around at the local park. The NBA range three pointers were falling for me today as were the shorter range shots and the foul shots. I'm really starting to get used to the form changes that I made in my foul shooting routine. I'm front rimming the foul shots much less often than I was with a flat footed follow through. Now, because of the added inch or two in elevation from the ankle extension, I'm getting lots more swishes and back rimmers, which I think is a fine result. I think the left to right variance will work itself out with some more practice, which should improve my balance.

I also chopped some more wood on Monday in the mid day sun. Was fun. I'm looking forward to King Richard's Fair in the fall, where they have the sledge hammer strength test. Hopefully I can ring the bell this year.

Now that I've dropped a few pounds over the past year, I think I'm ready to gain some more muscle before cutting more fat. I'm not gonna do anything nuts like the gomad diet that pushed me from 160 to 220, but instead I'm gonna try to eat more healthy stuff.

My mental health has been damn near fantastic lately to say the least, and as some of you may already know, this has been a big problem for me in the past. I'll just say that medication has changed my life for the better and I never intend to go back to the life that I once lived. I've managed to stay out of the hospital for over three years as of July 2016 and I'm quite proud of that.

Cheers.

I shot around a bit at the local park and chopped some more wood yesterday. Was fun and I broke a good sweat. Luckily, I'm not sore at all.

I chopped some more wood yesterday at my friend's house and broke a good sweat. I've chopped probably a bit over a cord of wood since last Friday when the adventure started, which isn't bad for a spare time project imo. We still have a bunch to split though. There is about 1/2 cord of logs left to split that are <16 inches in diameter as well as five big stumps that measure about 36 inches in diameter. The little logs are easy. The stumps are not easy.

By the end of the day yesterday, I was covered in sap and smelled like someone out of a Charles Dickens novel, but it was fun. At the end of the day we stacked a bunch of the chopped stuff and it looks nice and neat next to my friend's shed.

I'm off to a pool party today. I probably won't swim though because I don't like swimming when it's not particularly hot out. Should be fun though.

I worked my way through one of the stumps yesterday afternoon. It was a piece of particularly knotty pine that didn't want to be split into pieces. After many sledgehammer throws, I defeated the wood and the reward was feeling awesome.

I broke a sweat a few times in the past week. I was bored and lonely around 9pm on Wednesday night so I went to the park and shot around a bit. Then on Friday I fit in a daytime shoot around. Yesterday afternoon I worked my way through a stump and a half of the knotty pine. However, I broke the wedge in doing so and I quit for the night. Gotta go get a new wedge before I can make any more progress.

I'm finally done splitting wood as of 4pm est today lol. It's about a cord and a half I think. Was fun. I sent a picture of the pile to my girlfriend that said, "check out my wood baby!"

Also I've been shooting around often lately. In fact I just got back from the park. Feels good at the moment.

Gonna keep up with the basketball practice as I'm thinking of getting into coaching this winter. I'd also like to fit in a good hike with my sister sometime soon, preferably to the top of a mountain. I always wanted to hike to Owl Head in NH, which is a small peak that is surrounded by 4000 foot mountains deep in the heart of the White Mountains. Would be cool to be there for the fall foliage.

I may or may not mess around with some weights in the driveway and or do some body weight exercises. My favorite body weight exercise is the back bridge. My chin up abilities are likely severely lacking at the moment. There's a good spot for me to do them at my brother's house, and he only lives a few miles away.

I just got back from the park. Was a good shoot around and I got some sun too. My girlfriend made an appearance and we walked around the track. Was nice.

The shots were definitely falling for me today and I think I swished four or five foul shots in a row, which is a fine result from the form changes that I've been working on.

I'm pretty sure that I hold the record for most foul shots ever on that particular court, as well as the most foul shots made.

I got a chance to shoot around every day since my last update and the results have been good. However, I just went to the park and noticed that my ball was a bit flat. When I tried to pump it up, it broke and it will no longer hold air.

I'm gonna figure out a way to break a sweat today but haven't decided just how as of yet. Will report back.

My brother invited me to throw a football around yesterday. Apparently throwing a sledgehammer a thousand times is good for the throwing arm. Who knew? He punted the football well over my head when we were playing catch and I threw a bomb over his head from about 50 yards away.

This morning I got a message from my friend. It said "come split wood at my house." I didn't ask where he got the wood till I got there. Apparently his neighbor had a tree worth of logs, which ended up in my friend's yard. I spent the morning splitting the logs and almost finished but I had something to do. I split about 80% of it, which was quite easy compared to the pine that I split over the past month. This stuff wasn't knotty at all, but I gave it a spanking anyways.

I'm still without a basketball. Kinda sucks.
