I went for an easy run the day before with the new Altra escalantes. They felt fantastic but I could not pull trigger. I had remained injury free the last two months with the ZoomFly. So I just went with old faithful.
I went off with the leaders of the pack. Just messing around. I had my first setback before the race, one of my Bluetooth blew up so I was only using left ear. As I stormed off at 6:50 a mile pace I realized my phone wasn't going to fit in my shorts pocket (my iPhone does). So I had to run the 13 miles with phone in hand, nobody faster than me did this. Lol, noob.
I mostly hit close to 7min pace for the first 7 miles. The guy with the best physique stuck on me and we were joined shortly by a very fit woman. The three of us ran together for three miles and they let me lead into the headwind. I could hear them yapping away behind me. When we turned and the headwind reversed, they took off. Bastards. Here they are leaving me behind
Around mile 5 I got an endorphins rush and caught up to them. By mile 7 I really thought I could hit 1:30, which would be sickening for old man who averages 20-25 miles a week.
I started feeling a blister in mile 7. By mile nine I was still good but pace was now 7:15. They got ahead of me for good at mile 9, but next to them I could see young kid slowing down. So that was my target
By 10.5 miles my legs started getting real heavy. By 11.5 miles no matter how hard I tried, I was at 8 min pace. I don't know what hitting the wall is, but something was happening. My Bluetooth fell and splattered open at mile 12.5. I almost got a hamstring cramp picking it up. I slowed down a bit trying to unlock my phone and use speaker music. My right calf started cramping but there was only .5 miles left. I went for a last minute surge and finished 12/200. I was first in my age group and third overall masters. I ran a positive split but I planned it that way.
Also had heart rate malfunction and just went with all heart. If anything, I went too balls out. With heart rate data I have, it looks like I averaged 164. That's too high but overall I have zero regrets about my effort. Very happy with the time, if I can hold that same pace for a full marathon I basically qualify for Boston.
We will see what's next. I have lots of pictures but my sister is in all of them. Sucks to run with a phone, but short shorts were a success. Solid quads and shoulders oozing out of my outfit.
