Weight Loss Question:

When initially cutting weight (reduced/low carb diet), roughly at what point does it switch from mostly water being lost to mostly body mass (muscle/fat) being lost? I have no idea, but was thinking somewhere around 5-10 lbs down it switches but this is definitely not my area of expertise.

I'm guessing somewhere around 25-30% as I have not measured that. I'm 5'8" and started at 238.5 lbs. Just trying to add to my knowledge of weight loss and not just strength gaining.

I don't think you're fat enough for this to be a thing.

Besides, your body size needs a certain amount of water anyway regardless. I don't think its actually quantifiable to ever be able to say "now I've lost 7lbs so everything after that is going to be body mass, not water". Happy to see evidence otherwise. Thrempubmed where are you?!

I doubt this sort of thing has ever been empirically studied. Maybe a slightly different formulation of the question is possible. Like, "of the first X lbs lost how much is water and how much is fat and how much is muscle?" But no way they have %'s of marginal pounds (imo).

I'd say a couple of lbs are water, then fat and muscles. Train and you lose a bit less of the latter.

I had a feeling that there hasn't been any studies on it. Was just a thought I had when I weighed myself this morning and figured I would ask to see if anyone had an idea. I have heard that when switching diet you tend to lose mostly water right away and figured that at some point it moved towards losing more actual body mass than water (understanding that it is probably always a mix of everything - water, fat, muscle). Definitely not worried about it too much as my overall body weight is still trending downwards.

Easy to way to get ballpark amount. Eat low carb at your maintenance calories for a week. Watch some fake weightloss in action.

I have probably explained this topic to people IRL at least 20 times.

My favorite is the fatty friend who finally figured out how to lose weight. He combined keto with fasting. Thinks he found the Holy Grail of weightloss.

Lol. It's the two most restrictive diets in the planet plus the fake weightloss from going carbless. Yeah no shiet it's going to work. I told him to try to my XYZ diet, he can only eat items that start with those letters. He looks at me with a blank face.

I don't do keto or fasting. For now I just cutout processed carbs as that is where my issue usually is - I like baked goods. Sticking with meat, cheese, eggs, and veggies right now. Not eating much fruit as I am allergic to a lot of them unless they are cooked. Usually would cook fruits to have them in baked goods so it is just easier right now to exclude them. No BS on the allergy thing - went and got tested a few years ago. Not counting calories right now either. Figured I would just eat better foods and worry about calories when the weight loss starts plateauing.

Well, I think if you detect X sexually transmitted diseases, there is some X for which the possibility of go girl is extremely high. Nevertheless, I agree there are better ways.

loco is trying to communicate the concepts of water retention via glycogen storage that affects everyone from all-the-breads to literally zero carbs, along with gastric emptying. Shockingly if you eat literally half what you normally do, you'll have half the **** hanging out in your body waiting to get pooped out.

Basically you can figure all this stuff out on your own with just a little effort and a notebook. It'll take days, I did this on/off during my weightloss bet with MLY. It was interesting, but ultimately inane. If you cut out a bunch of carbs, and don't consume much carbs in general, shockingly you probably lost a bunch of water weight.

Maybe I misinterpreted your post. It seems like you were being dismissive of my love of actual science as opposed to MS Paint speculation on asinine theories or just wanton neckbearding. Regardless, I apologize if you were in fact shining a light on the need for more evidence based medicine in lieu of believing things that have literally never been documented like dislocated ribs, or fascia getting knotted, or whatever fake illness people make up.

Also, I'm not going to get into a whole derail, but do you actually think that you're better at interacting with people in an adult, professional setting than I am?
