In one's journey to health and fitness perfection, you reach a point where too much is a thing. It actually hurts you. Plenty of you have reached this point when it comes to strength.

But it also happens in endurance. In aesthetics and bodyfat.

I reached the peak in all three. There is nothing more I can do to improve my health. Sure somebody can nitpick my diet but I think that's mostly overrated. I am not going to get extra 5 good years by going vegan. I don't think I am but I do keep up with some of the research on this.

At age 43, my current peaks to where there is no more benefit are

* 6:00 mile - I ran 5:16 in May 2020, went beyond this. I will compromise my health a little bit for racing and have done in in the past with marathons and marathon training

15% bodyfat - I can easily go lower and I do for races but it's my sweet spot and I start looking terrible in clothes and my face gets skeleton like.

* The strength stuff is all debatable. But there is zero doubt after 40 you gotta be real careful with some of this stuff. And again 315/280/365 numbers for a 40 year old, I compromised my health to reach these strength goals.

And now I am at peace with trying to hold on to what I have for dear life. I am trying to get my mile to 5:00 but I think in general I can keep that as a healthy activity, while running a 2:56 marathon is pushing it. It's probably unhealthy.

You get my drift bro?

A non-H&F example: you can tune, adjust, and modify a Ford Pinto to run at it's peak, but when compared to other vehicles it is no where near peak performance in any theater. You were talking about the former while I was looking at it as the later.

But to answer your question more directly, try 65kg for 4 sets of 12 with a stopwatch and 3 min rests and add 2.5 per week.
OK I'll give it a shot. Maybe I'll work up to a heavy double or something and then do this as my main work.

I'm pretty sure I can't do it. My breathing patterns for high rep sets are terrible. I'm way out of breath before my legs are close to failing.

Short term goal is to just drop 20lbs and preserve as much strength as possible. Will reassess when I get there.

Personally I’d just drop my 5s weight by a few and do 3 x 3 just because it made the cut and adding cardio easier without making me much weaker and I didn’t care what I looked like so much as general and heart health. Just an anecdote.
This is probably what I would have done if left to my own devices.

You're right about the no heart. When it comes to lifting, especially, I've got almost none. I'll take any excuse to not lift. Barbell squats on a bad knee requires way more heart than I've got. I probably took off about 2 more weeks than I really needed.

I do log in a notebook with a pencil and paper as I lift. I'm too lazy to transcribe it over here. It probably would be beneficial, though.

I know, if it's not here it doesn't count.

Melkerson needs to log and have consitency for a few years.
You're not wrong, but I don't have enough WIM for that. At least not yet. I project that in about 5-8 years, my kids will get to the point where they want to spend as little time with me as possible, and I'll more easily find the time. These days, with few exceptions, the only times I exercise are when they're asleep. So I've got to get up really early or train late. And like I said, I just don't have the WIM to do a lot of that.

I wasn't worried. Just curious.

I was just self-owning so you'd post a pic of your Adonis-esque physique! Seriously, you da man.

I actually agree that guys who already post here who don't log probably don't train consistently. Myself, it was on and off and a lot of spinning of wheels (so pretty much like when I did log).

In Melk's defense, finding the time and heart to train consistently with little kids takes more heart. Not impossibruh, just harder. If you haven't established good habits before the kids pop out, you're likely ****ed. Myself, I'm just happy that Soulgirl sleeps consistently until 7 AM now, damn what a difference that makes.

are you a single dad or something? If you want to train and it is important to you, you will basically always find a way...

That's exactly what I'm saying. It takes more heart, but obviously possible barring extreme circumstances. And no, I'm not.

Yep. Either the family has been travelling all over, or its worse than that. Next 48 hours of testing will be interesting.

Maybe she called the lockdown to use as an excuse to cut off correspondence with him

Jacinda knows better than that. Ain't no lockdown gonna keep Melkerson from beating the **** out of a dead horse. Even if she chooses not to respond.

But since she is a busy woman, I try to rein it in.

Apologies to all Aotearoans for the bad juju. If you guys will grant me citizenship, I promise to make a sacrifice to PLOKJ on your nation's behalf.

It's behind you if you decide it is. You say you compromised your health to hit your lifetime PRs, so that could be the right decision for you. But, I continued to improve after my 43rd birthday. I still continue to improve. Cha improved big time from that age. The point is that it is doable.

Aidan - I've been wondering the last couple of years...it seemed you really wanted to stay in the US. Has that feeling completely left you and you high-five your wife every day that you are in NZ right now?

My wife repeatedly mentions we need to move to NZ over the last 4 years. Alas, we don't have professions NZ wants/needs.

Still mixed. I'm pretty happy with what I'm doing now, but always hard to say. Definitely better off with family life here by a lot though, didn't have kids then.

Interesting. The family equation definitely makes a big difference of course. It's family all the way down from here on out!
