10mph isn't really sprinting speed. It'd be a fast 5k pace (18.36) but not elite.

Anyway, pretty sure that the calories used increases linearly with speed, so in the trial above the only thing that matters is how the numbers work out relative to each other, the speed and the actual numbers don't matter.

Zenzor - I had a cold about 4 weeks ago but even after the main symptoms had worn off after about a week the infection stayed around for weeks in my sinuses. Even though it wasn't apparent most of the time I'd get light headed or get headaches periodically, especially when lifting. These things can hang around for ages.

The point wasn't for people to use this exercise to figure out their own caloric burn, it was to compare the results from several different methods which are generally assume to be inaccurate on this forum: treadmills and online calculators.

For that purpose, 10 mph is fine. It should actually highlight any glaring discrepancies between the calculators more than a common jogging speed such as 6 mph would. (I think so anyway.)

The main takeaway for me is that most online calculators apparently calculate gross calories burned and not net. (Which might be the intent and people have just been misusing them.) Outside of that issue, assuming the study was good, then the calculators I checked seem to give reasonable estimates of caloric burn for walking and running.

Just wanted to add to what I said above re calories increasing linearly with speed. Afaik this is only for calories used during the exercise. Total calories burned increases at a higher rate as you run faster because of the increased recovery (EPOC?) effort.

Good post, I was mostly just nitting anyway.

do you work out right before bed? are you eating enough carbs for the amount of training your doing?

Diet and hydration would be my go-to guesses here.

This might be it. Although one thing I noticed today is the light-headedness goes away when I leave my apartment, and it gradually creeps back when I return inside.

Nah I usually work out in the middle of the day. If anything I'm eating too many carbs as I seem to be blowing through pasta at ridiculous rate.

Your apartment is probably going to blow.

For instance if you have a gas leak this can cause brain fog, as can other fumes.

Or maybe a mold problem?

^^ Probably got some merit although it'd probably be prudent to look up some more up to date info. That was from 1993. I'd imagine the main problem would be increased load on the joints leading to injury so you'd probably have to load the weight slowly over a number of weeks.

Tbh though there's probably way simpler, safer and more optimal ways of improving your running than by using a weight-vest. Before I considered it I would want to know that I was already at a decent standard (ie got all noob gains out of the way) and I'd have to know that my progress was plateauing despite using an optimal training routine.

I'm about to get in to kettlebells. Someone recommended a brutal 45min DVD workout that I want to try 1-2/wk. I was about to pull the trigger on this set of kettlebells from Walmart:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/3-Piece-Ca...undle/15711152

But then I read in some forums that it's worth it to spend the money on a good kettlebell because the grip is better and the handle placement is easier on your wrists in the long run. Is it better to go with the Walmart 3 set or just start with a single very good quality KB like this?:

You could check out the Neptune Fitness Troy series as well.

Not knowing anything about how strong you might be, it's very likely 30 pounds is too light if you intend to do swings. I'm about as wimpy as it gets and I started with 30 pounds and purchased a 45 pounder for swings within 2 months or so.

That's another thing I'm not sure how much weight to start with. 45 min with 30lbs sounds kind of tough, so I was thinking maybe 25 lbs to start with. Thoughts?

The ones I recommended are called Neptune Troy series. I'm not sure if that's the Troy referenced by "Troy Quality."

Neptune looks slightly more expensive than onnit.com but Neptune has free shipping. (Not sure about onnit.)
