yeah, my response sounds directed toward people who are well into SS, so it's bad. i definitely don't suggest starting SS with DL+RDLs every other day. basically the core exercises done correctly will settle these "issues," most of which people pay too much attention to (everyone has butt wink in the beginning).

Eh. DLing everyday when you start SS should be standard. Adding in RDLs if that is your intention could be suitable if someone intends to never learn an explosive movement. But is still kind of ******ed, as you'll soon be working in lower weight, less CNS stimulating movements.

Agreed. If I had read better, I would have been DLing every day when I started. But I didn't. So I did a lot of meaningless power cleans and rows that probably didn't help me at all.

I think Rip is only doing solely DLs for a week or so. It shouldn't be much longer than that even if someone is completely ******ed.

Hey can we get an updated list of acronyms? The one in the FAQ barely starts to cover all the ones that are used here, and a quick reference would be handy. It could just be added to the FAQ, or to the OP of this thread.

I'd me more than happy to start working on this, if someone wants me to.

Make a list and I'll add them.

Okay prob about as noob a question as there is. A friend of mine asked me exactly this, 'what isa good site for dumbell lifting' and so what would be a good answer. Starting Strength I think is the right answer for a program for him as he is noobish and been burning lotsa fat and doing cardio and all kinda other things, some I don't agree with, but is there a good site(s) that you guys could recommend? Why doesn't he want to use barbells?

I am guessing he does as that is why he asked.

He worked a lot of weight off doing a lot of cardio. Often hr long plus cardio session on machines and stuff, and that is the part I don't agree with. He did this over months and months, not sure how long, but a fair bit. I mentioned to him a while ago he should be lifting too, not just losing all the weight then doing it, and weeks later (today) he got back around to me asking that question.

Have there been any female SS logs here on 2p2? I'd like to get my sister to give it a try, but she most likely has the same reservations about "bulking up" that 99% of females have.

Dumbbells and barbells are different

Edit: To elaborate a bit. The lifts in starting strength use barbells. A good website to learn about this stuff is:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi..._Strength_Wiki

There are some lifts that Rippetoe says you can do with dumbbells and get just as effective a workout (I believe bench?) but to avoid confusion I'd just suggest following the program as written.

i believe rip states that you should not do PCs the first few weeks, and instead do DL every workout. this way you get some extra practice with the DL movement and will help your PC progression because your first pull is already dialed in pretty well.

That's part of it. The other part is that rank novices are so thoroughly unadapted to stress that they can recover quickly. As such, they should take advantage of this by deadlifting (the most taxing event) as much as possible until 3 times a week is killing you. Then switch to every other (still a lot) until you need to swap it with back extensions (or GHR) and something else.

ok thanks, and sorry just in a crappy mood today. Yea was just posting what he said and basically think he just was referring to weights. Not a defining barbell or dumbell deal.

I really have no idea about good forums and sites for a person interested in lifting weights. I gave him this forum a while ago to have a read thru and linked the FAQ's etc, so ya.

-zero- is a semi-regular poster here and mostly posts in the monthly thread and the gym observations thread. She kept a log here for awhile: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/85...-crazy-290462/

I think there's another female log linked to in the FAQ along with some info about the fear of bulking up. There's also more info here: http://sfbfitness.com/ and here. And of course Rippetoe discusses the topic in various venues including his books.

Is it harder to overtrain if you are a new lifter or a more advanced lifter?

I have a question that I tried to search, but I didn't find anything....

Is there a benefit to using dumbbells for benching as opposed to regular bench? I understand the need for certain sports (i.e., football) to do barbell bench, but I'm curious to know if other sports (i.e., basketball) would benefit more from dumbbell. If someone could highlight the differences between the two, and the pros/cons of each, that would be awesome.

kyle, wouldn't you say gaining fatz is pretty much inevitable even for novices after a short while if they start out on a low body fat % though? Re: guys Rip posted as examples. Of course they got a massive LBM gain as well, just saying fat gain will happen as well.
I would like to see these examples, where are they?

hi, what are good exercises for your neck? not actually neck but the muslces on either side of it that sort of buldge out, if you know what i mean.

I know that standing and holding a dumbell in either hand and raising your shoulders while keeping your arms straight and parallel to your body,(kinda like you 'shrug') is a good exercise. but I have heard that it is better to lift up and then back.

so im kind of confused, so if anyone can help me out on this

They're at Rip's forum - http://startingstrength.com/resource...play.php?f=129. I don't remember the thread title unfortunately, you'll have to search for yourself.
