Completely off topic: Protein shake burps are so disgusting.

Does anyone else have criminally rough hands after not lifting for a while when their callouses peel?

I have a ton of them and my hands are like a war zone atm. But while I'm lifting, the knurling like... self-files them.

I have pretty poor shoulder flexibility and tend to keep my arms pretty far out to support the barbell. Think of a crucifixion or some poor guy carrying water in buckets suspended from sticks, with my hands near the pins on the cage. The bar rests on my traps along with my triceps, then touches my hands. I've gotten some pretty nasty bruising on my arms now that I'm doing a decent amount of weight. Is there something I should be doing differently to avoid this? Or do I just toughen up and eventually I'll get used to it?
As already said, your bar position may be a little off, or you're driving the bar into your skin. Or, you may just have really sensitive blood vessels at that point in your body.

I haven't had bruises on my arms or back, but my shins get them all the time from deadlifting. It seems that simply touching the bar against my shin produces a bruise, as does tracking the bar along the length of my leg. I'm not ramming the bar into my leg, so I don't know why this is. Anyone else get this?

I do tend to get bruises a decent amount. I went again and used a higher position and it seemed to do better. I don't quite follow what you mean by driving the bar. I'm trying to balance something more than I weigh on my back, the bar is trying to drive through my body more than anything.

I did get very lightheaded at the end of my 3rd set today, though. I had to rack and drop low to the ground (hanging onto the bar still) to recover. I also felt very lightheaded after mowing the lawn outside for 2 hours in the heat yesterday. I don't ever get that way even playing full court basketball when it's this hot, so it's very weird its happening. I've been having a lot more trouble breathing while squatting, and it might just be shortness of breath and not getting enough oxygen. I am trying to make an effort to breathe in and out at the top, although I mostly had been breathing in while going down and out at the top. I also felt like I was going to spew while squatting, but it was a bit after I ate a pretty large breakfast.

some squat cleans

any huge mistakes? posted in my log but no responses. the second clean I was just trying something new. I felt I got much better extension from the hips but I think my feet are too close.

I meant potentially pushing the bar against your back more than the weight already does. However, with that much weight, the pressure on your back may be enough to burst blood vessels. Some people bruise easier than others.

To the people recommending the 1.25 lb plates from Amazon or Ebay: I think he wants the McMaster-Carr washers because they are 10 ounces (0.625 lbs, or half of a 1.25 lb plate) each.

Has anyone on this forum done Joe Defranco's Built Like a Badass program? A friend of mine is about 4 weeks into it now and likes it though it seems like it would be ridiculed in these parts for being pretty bro-ish. if anyone else has feedback on it, i'd appreciate it

It depends on your training history and goals. For a novice it's unnecessarily FPSy with lots of bodybuilding type assistance work. For a more advanced trainee who cares about hypertrophy it might be a decent option. I haven't done it myself but I read some stuff about it on various forums and the consensus was that if you want a DeFranco program ws4sb is better.

after reading through SS, I notice no one is wearing gloves. For people following the SS program, do you wear gloves?

and is there any sort of weight/item/something I can buy that are the size of 45lb plates but are lighter so i can do all my sets at the same starting height?

thanks for any help provided in advance!

Gloves reduce your grip strength, but prevent callouses. They can be used for dumbell curls and whatnot, but most people do not use them for any of the "ss" lifts.

You are looking for "bumper plates" to replace your 45's

If you find a rack without fixed-position safety bars, you could probably squat a few inches deeper. Also, don't watch yourself in the mirror.

Unfortunatly the only Rack in the Gym, fixed position saftey bar really sucks the first few times i hit the safteybar wich really throws me off and resulted in a couple of fails.

Trying to look at a fixed point on the floor next time.

Thanks.
