That happens for awhile. When you're not weak.... It gets much harder.

You can't really do SS without barbells, sorry.

I'm taking ~5 mins between sets on SS now, standard?

Yes, standard.

Is stretching advised before (or post) KB routine involving swings, cleans etc.? Also, can swings be qualified as a warm up prior to doing more strength exercises (pulls, cleans, squats etc.)?

From Rip's articles he says he added the bench to SS because of its popularity at the time (or the un-popularity of the press).

I know we beginners aren't supposed to try to vary anything, but could we infer that a program with squats, presses, dips(?), deads and cleans would have been written if it would have sold as well?

If so that would be easier to complete without a spotter.

Often on my last rep of a heavy bench set when I am struggling to get the bar up, my butt will come off the bench a little bit as the bar finally gets to the top. I feel like this is giving me the extra little bit to make it.

Is this acceptable or something I need to fix?

totally acceptable imo.

that's what you need to get it done and you aren't being judged in a competition.

You can bench in the cage/rack without a spotter. Have the safety bars lower than your chest but higher than your neck. Works quite well.

Hmmm. I just tried it without lifting my butt off the seat on my last set. Completed it fine.

I guess I'll save that as a last resort life or death save in the future.

Sounds like a good idea. Slippery slope imo, soon you'll start getting bro assists and bouncing off your rib cage.

I think that Rip initially felt this way, but came around to liking the bench press for a variety of reasons (balance of work for the shoulders/chest when augmented with the press being a big one). Starr I know doesn't care for the bench press.

Dips are absolutely a fine substitution for bench pressing; Rip has stated this many times. However, it can lead to some weird injuries, including cracked/fractured sternums; it's also hard to load properly.

I would stick with the bench press until you get reasonably strong with it, then make your own decision wrt dips.

No. Its not acceptable. This is a weird way to view things and makes no sense. If its a question of whether you risk injury/harm, then obviously its fine. But to think in a vacuum that raising your hips up is acceptable is dumb.

I couldn't disagree more.

If you're benching and you need to raise your hips up to complete the final rep or fail (which is how it was presented) then I have no issue with driving your legs so hard that your butt comes off the bench some.

It's not like i'm advocating to complete sets that way, just in a 'get it or fail' scenario. I'm surprised you would disagree tbh.

I am currently doing weighted dips. The first rep of every set I feel like my sternum is going to crack and my shoulders are going to rip out of their sockets. However, once I get the first rep out of the way I can get my body in balance, redistribute the weight to my tris/chest better, and I feel fine.

Still, in some ways I feel like weighted dips are just an injury waiting to happen. Anyone have any suggestions for a better (safer) press assistance exercise?

I never bridge to complete a bench rep I know I am going to fail otherwise. Not because I have any moral opposition to it, but because it never occurs to me to do so.

However, I have done some horrible feeling things to my back straining to lock out the last rep of an overheard press set.

just curious, do you do warmup sets of dips before your weighted work-set?

+1 on feeling like dips are going to rip my shoulders off.. Although I never get any sternum pain.

Is chronic pain/cramp in the soles of your feet standard? Started SS this week, wearing Ironworks fwiw. My recovery periods during squats and power cleans today were determined by the foot pain!
