if you are running a certain distance, and at the end your legs feels fine but you are gasping for breath, the way to improve your time over that distance is to . . . ?

my natural assumption is to practise doing runs over longer distances, but i know dick about running.

vo2 max work.

longer distance runs only prepare your legs for a longer beating.

long runs do a lot more than just preparing your legs for more beating. the answer would largely depend on what the certain distance tmcdmck is running is though.

i've been generally unable to communicate today.

i was thinking of LSD runs, where i've never see anything good attributed to them.

i think tempos, fartleks, and intervals will target most physiological changes that are required. assuming one has the distance down.

if i'm wrong, i'd greatly appreciate some info.

LSD runs have their place in certain goals. They would be a big factor if tmcdmck wanted to improve 5k+ times and the main factor if he was new to running.

I had a layoff of 2-3 weeks from working out because of snow and had been pretty lazy about working out for a couple months prior. Anyway I've been back in the gym not missing a workout for about 2 weeks now. The first day back I could bend down and touch my toes. Lately I can get about halfway down my shins. My hamstring flexibility is about the same, judged by supine hamstring stretching. So I guess this is a lower back flexibility/tightness issue. Is this something to be concerned about/what is the problem?

I went to squat today, and my knee has been bothering me, but has been less bad the last couple days, so I went to squat and there was still pain when I was just warming up with the bar, so I looked at my knee and there was some light bruising all around the painful area, so I decided not to squat today. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? What did you do? Should I take some time off of squatting and see if this goes away? Any answers or experiences are much appreciated.

if you have been doing cleans and deadlifts i would bet that i what caused the bruising. if it wasnt too painful, i def woulda squatted.

How much weight can 35 lbs barbells (regular, not curl) typically hold safely?

I haven't been doing cleans, but I have been doing deadlifts, and I deadlifted today and the knee was fine doing that.

look, i meant that i often get bruises on my knees bc i bang the bar into them while doing cleans or deadlifts. usually i dont realize it until later.

a bruise is usually from blunt trauma. i dont see how squatting could cause that. i do see how banging or dragging them with a barbell could cause bruising.

Be careful of lopping off your knees (or bruising your kneecaps) while lowering a DL. I'm guessing it has something to do with this.

Also I need to reset my squat from 300.

I read in the faq to drop it down 10.

I also remember something about 10-15% before.

Which is better?
