2/18
Warmup - 8'
LD5 (UT2) - 50'
11863m/2:06.5/15.9 spm/157 HR/166 MHR

Fine. Still a bit confused about the HR, but hopefully it'll come down as I get more used to the new stroke pattern.

Re: Monte's Log, Featuring a Debate About Dotard Genetic Potential with an Ant

2/19
Warmup - 8'
LD6 (UT2) - 60'
14062m/2:08.0/15.5 spm/150 HR/162 MHR

Slower pace kept the HR a bit more in control; truly a shocking discovery. Sunday is kind of an interesting workout - 2 sets of 16'/8'r where within each 16' piece is 1:20 of "full pressure" and :40 light paddling. The stroke rate is capped at 24, so it shouldn't end up being a sprint, but sounds like it'll still be tough. We'll see how it goes.

can you please just elaborate on what the 16 and 8 r are for your intellectually challenged Australian fans?

I remain in awe of your volume

Re: Monte's Log, Featuring a Debate About Dotard Genetic Potential with an Ant

This volume is actually much lighter than what I'm used to, so I feel pretty good these days. Still stretching the hammies after my row and getting slightly less immobile, so maybe I'll be able to sit at 90 degrees with my legs straight and touch my toes in 2 years.

Re: your question, 16' = sixteen (16) minute work sets, and the 'r' after the eight (8) indicates that's a rest (i.e. light paddling) period. 10'-15' warmup and 5'-20' cooldown after this one, so it'll be a big day.

He's of the opinion that the rest period's purpose is to get you prepared for more work, so he tends to program longer rests so you're fully recovered for your work sets, as doing them while still mildly fatigued isn't something he thinks is valuable.

Circling back to this comment, we just texted a bit and he thinks, given the fact that the UT1 felt how it should, that my UT2 is just underdeveloped in comparison. Guess I need to go even fuller cardiobunny. (He does say it should continue to improve.)

Re: Monte's Log, Featuring a Debate About Dotard Genetic Potential with an Ant

2/21
Warmup - 18'
LD7 (AT) - 2x16'/8'r
16'_1: 4098m/1:57.1/22 spm/172 HR/176 MHR/107 drag (1:48-1:50 interval pace)
16'_2: 4054m/1:58.4/23 spm/174 HR/180 MHR/110 drag (1:46-1:48 interval pace)
Cooldown - 20' (2:10 @16)

Paced this one pretty well I think; the pieces are programmed with full pressure for 1:20 and light paddling for :40, with spm targets of 22-23 for the first piece and 23-24 for the second - I just counted off 30 strokes per interval for the first piece and 32 strokes per interval for the second piece and it worked out. We talked about the issue with rating up that I had during the earlier UT1 workout and I did a better job doing the workout as programmed today.

He wanted me to keep an eye on the pace I was doing for the intervals and report the range, and I was able to increase the pace as I rated up (my total meters were lower in the second piece because I wasn't getting as much oomph from my rest paddling). Ended up being hard enough, but I'm not wiped out (which is a good thing, since I'm assuming I'll be doing 3x16' soon enough).

Nuts; can't even imagine considering doing anything approaching that for any number of reasons.

Long discussion on UT2 from Gardner that I thought had some stuff that was worthwhile:

Realized I hadn't been updating this; kind of a mixed bag, but I think getting down another few pounds in the next month is probably doable.

What does your coach think about your weight? Isn't lowering it going to make you lose some rowing gains?

Had this debate with thremp. I would personally want to row at 165 over 155. But not sure. Curious to hear what your coach says. 6'4" 195 vs 181. Even if it's all fat, it really isn't. There is obviously some gains in lbm, even if you don't seriously start lifting again.

He hasn't really said anything about it yet; I doubt I exactly fit the profile of someone that is really going for optimal performance, but I'll bring it up the next time we talk.

Could be a huge difference though, not sure. I know in running it's facking massive. For example I saw one study where losing three pounds of bodyweight was equivalent to taking epo. WTF.

Look at that fatty feel wrath, popping similar times to you. Maybe because he has 15 pounds on you. Dem fatties strong, look at Spy. And rich. And beechnuts.

Re: Monte's Log, Featuring a Debate About Dotard Genetic Potential with an Ant

2/27
Warmup - 20'

LD10 (AT) - 3'/6'r
3'_1: 845m/1:46.5/24 spm/179 HR
3'_2: 850m/1:45.8/25 spm/183 HR
3'_3: 855m/1:45.2/26 spm/185 HR
3'_4: 857m/1:45.0/27 spm/184 HR

Cooldown - 20'

Drag was 110 for the first two intervals and 112 for the next two (as programmed); I had the option to do two more intervals at 115 drag, but just didn't have it in me. Stroke targets were 24, 25, 25, and 26 for the intervals, so I slightly overshot there.

He said I started out a bit too quickly, and that I should have started out my first interval a bit slower than my final 1:40/:20 interval pace and ramped up from there (i.e. negative split both intra- and inter-interval). Luckily it didn't really occur to me how close this was going to end up being to 4x1k or I'd have been a bit more apprehensive.

Nice session!

Is the 6r total rest off the erg or does he want you doing very light rowing ? I assume the former but the question just struck me,
