Regarding my target, the speed pyramid is supposedly a good indicator of 2k performance (i.e. it "should" line up exactly). My last 2k was a 6:58.8 (1:44.7 pace) where I started out at 1:43.6 for the first 500 m and barely held on for the last 1500 m (1:44.7, 1:44.8, and 1:45.8), which probably indicates my aerobic fitness wasn't as good as it could/should have been (speed pyramid was at 1:43.4 in June, maybe a week or so before I tested).
Given I've put in a lot of distance since then, hopefully I've improved to the point that I can realize a 2k time similar to my last speed pyramid (1:42.4 a few weeks ago). My 8x500 is also a fair bit lower since the one prior to my last test (1:40.9 vs 1:42.4 - 8x500 is "supposed" to be 3 seconds faster than your 2k pace, so, again, I'm not quite mapping exactly onto that rule of thumb).
Given all that it seems reasonable to target a 1:42.5 pace, so the first 500 would likely be a bit faster (start with 10 hard strokes and all that), hopefully settling down into a 1:42.5 for the second two legs and leaving enough to at least hold on for the last 500 m and come in a touch below 6:50. We'll see!
yes...you can see what a noob I am - I was thinking 1.40 got us to 6.50 but I am mathematically challenged.
142.5 pace seems correct.
I also love going out very hard the first 10 strokes so that I have a little breathing space on the ideal race pace.
