re: MLYLT learns to love herself and changes her life (for real this time!)

I've been thinking about my exercise routine and I think I need to make some changes.
I love lifting weights and doing the SS, but with the past 3 weeks of only lifting once a week I have seen a significant improvement in the pain in my shoulder.
Now it only bothers me a couple of days a week as before it hurt constantly everyday. I had nerve testing done a couple of weeks ago and it came back normal. The doctor called and said the only options left were an MRI on my shoulder and physical therapy. I've already paid for an MRI on my neck, 2 neck x-rays, spine injections, and nerve testing.
I want to see if I can semi rest it for a couple of months and see if it heals. In this time, I will try to lift heavy weights once a week on the weekends and during the week I will run and lift a circuit style just to keep my heart rate up.
While I have maintained my calories for the last year and a half, my weight loss has slowed with a decrease in cardio and lifting heavier.

The plan has been to change my eating lifestyle to maintenance calories I will eat at 145lbs. This way I will have maintained the same eating habits for 2-3 years before reaching my goal weight and it will just be my lifestyle at that point and the chances of getting fat again are slim. The problem with this is my weight loss will slow to a crawl as it has been, so I need to up my calories burned with exercise and cardio.
Once I get to within 20lbs of my goal weight, I want to get back to SS because I love doing it, and hopefully my shoulder will be much better then.

Good plan?

Just an idea, but does your gym have cross trainer machines? Great cardio and low impact so you can get higher pulse without risking hurting your joints and knees etc. 40 min lifting weights followed by 20 min cross trainer and you'll see great results imo. If you're looking to restructure your training anyway that is.

MLY,

What others (and I) are arguing is that your weight loss "falling off" over the past 18 months is a result of your lower body weight allowing you less margin for error such that the ever-present inaccuracies in your logging are finally causing you to stall. Eating as many non-homemade meals as you have (even though you've improved on that front in fits and starts) is going to inevitably cause an underestimation in caloric intake and an increase in sodium consumption, both of which will cause problems with weight loss.

Cook more of your own food, walk more, do some random gym stuff if you want. As others have repeatedly tried to point out, accurate logging and eating better food are priorities one through infinity; if you do nothing else, just do that.

Re: your plan, I'd eat at maintenance for a 185 lb woman until you get into that ballpark, then adjust when things start to slow. Any lower would be too much of a change.

re: MLYLT learns to love herself and changes her life (for real this time!)

Owster,
Yes there is a cross trainer. I could do that instead of running on the treadmill as that hurts my shins.

Cit,
I don't want to do isolation lifts. Just something that keeps my heart rate up and keeps me moving where I don't have to rest 2-5mins between sets. With SS it is difficult to get the rest periods because I am always short on time and the squat rack isn't always available. I need a circuit that I can do in 25mins/3 rounds that doesn't irritate my shoulder. I'll do bench, squats, DL on the weekends.
Any suggestions?

I understand that my calories in and food should be the most important things, but I am scary manic low right now and I know it's because I haven't been exercising. I absolutely need the endorphins and exercise to stay semi stable for my mental health, so it needs to be as much of a priority as calories.

Is there an elliptical? That would give you cardio without pounding your joints and shins.

After knee surgery, I did elliptical and stationary bikes for cardio. They are also recommended for overweight people to minimize stress on the knees.

My mind would be blown, if true.

Although that phrase is something a Trumpkin would use, I seriously doubt he is one. It's just too incongruent with everything else. Gonna need more.

I wouldn't give up quite so much on lifting. Especially if you have an injury or are injury prone, making sure you have balanced strength (ex: most people are weaker in posterior chain and back) is key. From a lot of your lifting logs/vids, it looks like you have been pushing weight at the expense of form. If you have shoulder issues, your bench form is quite subpar (elbows flared, bar high on chest, narrow grip, poor leg drive), which can exacerbate pain. I would suggest dropping weights drastically and just heading in to practice form and concentrate on getting spot-on form as a goal rather than heavy PRs like you have been.

It takes a long time to groove that muscle memory, and even longer to change previous bad form. I wouldn't say put lifting as your primary form of exercise for weight loss, but do pay regular attention to it and get form practice in over time. It will do you no good to "rest" from lifting to try to heal an injury, then jump back in later only to use the same incorrect form and make things painful again.

Eventually as light/medium weights become more ingrained and any pain isn't triggered, focusing on lower/heavier reps can be more of a focus. This doesn't mean you won't get stronger, though. It is a long and steady road to gaining strength (and retaining and/or gaining muscle mass). By acknowledging that you have a long road to lifting heavy weights safely, you can still progress at lower/medium weights - just do not make weight progression be a goal each training session, and aim for something that you can definitely keep good form on.

Thanks Ginger. I have recently cut way back on squats and noticed a world of difference on my form. For now I just need to stay active.

Good post ginger. I would like to sum it up with; have the goal to go to the gym to train muscles, not to lift weights.

Nice Doing this on all lifts, and posting frequent form check vids, can help ensure you will improve with any imbalances you may have and prevent worsening of pain.

Being active is great, just make sure (for weight loss), you don't rely on this too much for cal burn. Just think of activity as an "extra" above your intake goal. Rely more on your general activity level over time for TDEE calculation rather than trying to make daily (or even weekly) changes. You still have enough fat mass that you don't need to worry that too low cals with additional activity outside your norm might mess up lbm loss or metabolism.

re: MLYLT learns to love herself and changes her life (for real this time!)

I went grocery shopping last night and I have planned out meals for the week.

Breakfast:Eggs, protein shakes, oatmeal, fruit

Lunch: microwave low calorie meals

Dinner: chicken stuffed with crawfish, turkey meat loaf+stuffed bell peppers,
Beef burger, and some other trips of beef.

I'm going to get back to taking my vitamins and keeping track of water. For the past week I have only had coffee, tea, and sodas.

2900...Yikes, though it came after two very low calorie days. Those 3 days taken together and ignoring the rest had a decent average.
