hot/cold rotating therapy for muscles

I had read somewhere that rotating heat/cold on your muscles was good for muscle recovery. So for example it was suggested that in the shower after a work out you might use 5-10 minutes of hot water and then 5-10 minutes of cold water and do a few rotations of that on the muscles you worked out.
I can't find any more info on this. I'm wondering if anyone has any information about this? I had always thought it was good to apply either heat or cold depending on what you want to accomplish. Heat increases blood flow and relaxes a muscle while cold reduces inflammation. I'm not sure what the rotation accomplishes.
In particular I'm trying to work out what to apply to my knees for patellar tendinitis and to my quads which I spent the last year rehabilitating from muscle tears.
Thanks for any info-
