Tues Jun 1

Full mobility routine (30 mins)
Hamstrings were still a bit tight so I did light RDLs before doing some higher rep, mid weight lifts

RDL

1x5 95
1x5 135
2x5 155

Could/should have added more weight there

Bench Press

2x6 135
5x8 185

Did skullcrushers as well.

After work foot felt pretty good. So I did ~2 miles incline walk on the tread over ~30 mins. Didn't run at all not wanting to f up my foot.

Been playing practicing a lot but maintaining my workout regimen. Game has been pretty poor this year quite honestly which is disappointing. I thought my focus through the fall and winter would yield better results but that hasn't occurred. Still grinding though.

Back on the 5/3/1 train after about a 6 week break. Currently in the deload week

Diet I have been basically holding steady in low 220's. TBH with summer and after a year of meticulously counting cals, etc. I just needed a break. Not where I want to be at the moment but also need to pause from it. Will probably go hard again on or about Sept 1 after a few August vacations.

Lastly, been really diving into the mobility, flexibility work. Been pretty consistently at least 6 days/week for about 6 months now...20-30 mins in the morning and the difference is astounding. However, I got a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) screen which ostensibly measures your fitness level purely through the lens of ability to execute golf swings, etc. effectively. No strength, no cardio, just mobility. Highlights (lowlights?) of my repot are below and it was...eye opening. I can only imagine how bad it was before the last 6 months.

For reference, I was given a "Fitness Handicap" of 27 but have an actual golf handicap of 2. So clearly my tight hips, ankles, thoracic, hams, etc. are limiting my ability to play well. Working on it but it was illuminating

Has any one ever heard of or looked at the Knees Over Toes guy and his program? I might give it a try for a month.

It's basically a strength and mobility training that targets ankles to knees, knees to hips and hips to upper back progressively in that order. He's clearly a good marketer but I feel like I do need a program targeting those areas.

What does your current mobility regimen look like?

Fairly standard...foam roll IT Bands, quads, hams and glutes.

Mix of static and dynamic stretching mostly targeting hips, glutes, shoulder mobility...some under load but most not

A few yoga poses

Some lacrosse ball rolling on particularly knotted areas

Some golf specific movements primarily focused on hips and posterior chain.

Outside of busy season

...get in whenever...usually about 9:15..

Check to see if I have any calls/zooms for the day.

Check to see if I have any client needs for the day (client needs a withdrawal or money moved from an account I manage, or client has a reporting required to a bank, etc.)

Shitpost Feelers across all SM platforms

~10:30-Lunch Do whatever work needs to be done for the day; meet with staff that may have questions on something they are working on, etc.

Go to lunch about 1

Try to "bunch" my calls/zooms for the afternoon...usually have 3 or 4 each day

3:30 or so back to work on whatever I need to review, etc. from staff

Usually pack up for the day ~5:30

Maybe 1 or 2 days a week in the summer I'll cut out around 2:30-3 just depending on workload, kids activities/lacrosse games, etc.

Rinse/repeat

I try to schedule 2 half days a month to work on forward looking/planning type business stuff. I'm not the greatest at that but my current assistant is quite good at keeping me moving forward.

During Busy Season

Utter mayhem between about 8:15 and 6:30 or so. Every day is the same but the specifics are, of course, always different.

Monday 8/9

Back on the grind after a bit of a summer slow down. I had been essentially cutting for 10-11 months so more or less around Mem Day I just upped my calories from 2k to about 2,500. Just needed a break. But back at it after a week in the mountains last week.

Tweaked my elbow mountain biking so I'm taking this week off from lifting. It's not terrible but I tried to lift heavy on Sunday morning and it was painful.

So just ran about 2.5 miles last night on the tread and did my mobility regimen for about 20 mins.

Tuesday 8/10

Was going to go on a hike with the wife and puppers last night until the storms rolled in. So I just jumped on the tread and did ~2 mile inclined walk. Also did my mobility regimen for ~25 mins.

Lastly, I started a new speed training application for my golf swing that is a bit more organized and easy to follow. It also has an app that allows me to compare progress, etc. and can tell me how long to wait in between sessions based on my output, etc. I had stopped with the speed sticks earlier in the summer when I started playing more. Glad to get back in to it.

What’s the app?

I had a long convo yesterday with a fellow former teaching professional and we got into a debate about how to train for speed in the golf swing. I was ranting after seeing some awful/irrelevant exercise a trainer was putting Justin Thomas through.

Much to be debated for sure but interested in the topic at the moment.

It’s called The Stack System. Same concept as SuperSpeed Sticks just more organized into a program with feedback, etc. It is the baby off Sasho McKenzie who is arguably the authority on Golf bio-mechanics.

I think doing actual speed work coupled with traditional power lifts and some explosive work is the recipe. And yeah there are some utterly ridiculous trainers and training programs out there.

Do you recall who JT was working with?

Think it was some weird puff piece during the olympics he was doing some dumb **** on an upside down Bosu ball. Just annoying that elite athletes are doing this crap.

I’ll look into that program, thanks. I agree about your thoughts. Sport specific speed work while progressively overloading the Olympic or power lifts was my first inclination.

Wednesday 8/11

Uneventful day. In the morning I did mobility work for about 30 mins as well as some explosive work...jumps and med balls. Went for a walk at lunch of about 1 mile.

Was supposed to play 9 holes last evening but it's Thunderstorm season and we never even got started.

Elbow seems still pretty meh so I may have to go see someone which is annoying. Have not lifted any weights because of it.

I believe Joey D was one of the first Golf Fitness guys (could be wrong). But I think the younger people in that space look at him as more of a marketer than a great trainer.

I vaguely remember he had a show on Golf Channel in like the early 2000's in the heydey of the Tiger effect

Thursday 8/12

Did mobility work in the morning for about 20 mins. Also did some static stretching in the evening for about 15 mins. Walked for about 2 miles at lunch in the blazing heat. Really is miserable here this week.

In the evening, I went to hit balls (indoors due to threat of storms) and got 1 hour in. This included ~20 mins of the new speed system protocol. Really enjoying getting back into that.

Elbow-doesn't seem to hurt swinging the club even making contact with the ground. Which is weird given that that is a lot of force on the arms typically. It still feels quite tender under load. Even when I lift a dumbell as light as 20 lbs and try to OH Press it I can feel it. So I will just continue to hold off until the tenderness is gone. It doesn't seem to bother me when I lift weight off the floor so I may try and do some DL net week.

Weekend 8/13-8/15

Played golf on Sat in an intra-club Ryder Cup style event. Was a lot of fun but not super competitive. We played 3 9 hole matches and due to the significant rain on Fri night we had a no cart policy in place (I always walk and carry anyway but some of the older members were struggling). But the spongy turf made for tougher than normal walking over 27 holes (~10 miles) plus it was 90+ degrees.

Anyway, I hit the ball really really well off the tee. Been trending in that direction over my last few rounds so I'm pretty excited. Will likely play both Sat and Sun this coming weekend so I will have a better handle on that after 36 holes of playing my own ball.

Did my first lift this morning and elbow seems to have held up fine. We shall see if it heats up later. Hoping I can get back into it though I am taking it slow with the loads on the bar.

Ate pretty meh over the weekend. Back at it today.
