75 seems vg for the first round of the season?

do you walk the course or buggy? Interested in how many cals you'd think you burn when walking/playing 18 holes?

I walk and carry probably all but 1 or 2 rounds per year. Round at my club covers about 6-6.5 miles but not sure about calories

75 is fine. My average round now is probably 75-78 I’d guess. When I was playing it was more like 69-73ish

Had a KVest assessment this morning. Tons and tons of data available though nothing unexpected was discovered. Here are the salient pieces of data:

Peer group is 1-5 handicap players in their 50's (I'm not exactly sure of the age range and forgot to ask). Basically says I consistently created speed in about the 75th-80th% for my peer group. About what I expected to see.

This image was probably the best data. Essentially all of my issues related from not posting up on the right side properly. You will see better players and pros and they essentially "sit into" their right hip. I don't do that at all and thus I don't load up well and can't fire into the ball from the top as well. Need to improve here. Should add some swing speed (distance) and consistency of strike.

This last slide shows that my hips and upper body don't move as quickly as a pro. Oddly my Arms and hands do move in the pro speed range. Improved hip loading should help to reduce the slowness of this but I clearly need improve.

Upshot-I need to work on my hip and core mobility/flexibility. It is currently holding me back considerably from playing better and driving it more consistently. Not a huge surprise at all but I am a data driven learner and all this data gives me a better path to improvement.

Yup I've been following his working with Will Z since the US Junior in 2014 or whatever year that was. Crazy to see

Curious about your full swing footwork and the impact it has on your legs and hips(specifically your inability to load on back hip). Over the winter at the range I started focusing on my footwork and had decent results. Previously I swung rather flat footed. I would only roll onto the instep of my left foot slightly. Fast forward past the experimental phases. Now I'm actively gripping the ground with my toes which activates tons of muscles from toes to hips. With these muscles activated at setup, my left leg has no choice but to maintain tensive strength throughout my swing. The effect is that my left heel comes off the ground and I load more weight onto my right side. Also the right leg being activated by the toes gripping the ground provides a better loading platform without having to actively think about my right leg position. Occasionally I get lazy and right knee will move away from the ball. But generally the toe grip keeps it in line.

Also you mention that your hand speed is good but youre not getting needed torque from the middle muscles? I watched a video comparison of dechambeau vs Berkshire. Berkshire has a pause at the top of backswing while dechambeau gets into downswing much faster. Theory is that this pause increases torque because legs and hips naturally pull the torso back to the ball due to the natural tension in the middle muscles. Without the pause you rely more on raw strength and utilize the natural tension less.

Its a cool video that does a good job of showing the proper loading and releasing sequences in slow motion.

Re: Footwork...I have generally always had good footwork. But I can definitely feel more stable and "grip" that you mention when I am properly loaded. For me, getting my right hip "outside" my feet quite literally leads to me being over my skis in a sense that I am out of balance and it's just ahuge power leak.

I'll check out the video.

Wed April 21

Leg day

1x5 135
1x5 185
1x3 185
1x3 225
1x3 245
1x1+ 255 (I did 4 reps)
4x8 135

With the heavier weights this week I have not done any complementary lifts.

I have been doing mobility work and foam rolling every morning for the last 2 or so weeks and really feels like it gets me going and ready for the lift. Particularly feels good to get that lacrosse ball and roll on it through the upper back and shoulders.

Wednesday-1,975 calories

TH April 22-Wed Apr 28

Still slammed at work which is why I have been slow to post. Deadline can't get here soon enough. Still working out every morning.

Finished out W3C3 of 5/3/1 (The "1 week") as follows:

OHP

1x6 65
1x5 75
1x3 95
1x3 115
1x1+ 115 (I did 5 reps)
4x8 65

Deadlift (off the rack)

1x5 95
1x5 135
1x5 185
1x3 225
1x3 255
1x3 275
1x1+ 295 (I did 4 reps)
5x8 155

I am now in deload week which feels good. As with last time I am doubling up and doing Bench/OHP and then Squat/DL on successive days 2x each.

Been running 2-3 times per week for 8-10 miles total per week on the tread. Still lolrunning but it's not too painful.

Calories-Averaging ~2,100/day

You're much better than me but I've found the key in my swing for both face/path control and power generation is proper right hip load.

My bad habit is to not, which then means I don't load into my left side properly to initiate the downswing and then have to drag my hands. Feels completely powerless when I start swinging like that.

Welp Monday is the big deadline. Been brutal the last few weeks. But I've been working out pretty much every morning. Will finish W2C4 of 5/3/1 tomorrow with Deads.

Been running on the Tread a fair amount. Been good. Also hitting balls quite a bit outside now that the weather has improved. Looking forward to actually playing next weekend...maybe during this week as well.

Diet has been good-ish. Probably more like 2400 avg calories/day which is fine. Scale hasn't moved in a few weeks but hasn't gone up either. once I get through this nonsense I will tighten the diet back up.

Will be back to regular posting after Monday

Peace

Weeee got through my deadline. Last week or two was brutal. Just stressful...clients are ****ing insane, etc.

Anyway, I was able to maintain my workout and golf work regimen through the whole busy season. I am still on W3C4 of 5/3/1. Think I will finish up this cycle and then might take a little break for a few weeks of deload. Here is my squat numbers from yesterday:

1x5 135
1x3 185
1x3 225
1x2 225
1x1+ 255 (I did 4 reps)
2x8 135

Also ran about 3 miles on the tread later in the afternoon.

Getting back to my target of 2k calories per day this week after being a bit higher the week-10 days prior. No weight gain tho.

Finished up Cycle 4 of 5/3/1 on Saturday with Deads as follows:

1x5 95
1x5 135
1x5 185
1x3 225
1x3 255
1x3 275
1x1+ 305 (I did 3 reps)
2x8 185

Definite progress through the cycles. Going to deload this week and then take a break from 5/3/1. With playing more golf and practicing a good bit this year I just want a bit less stressful program. Any thoughts?

Thinking a 3 day full body workout through the summer?

Will continue to do a lot of the mobility work I have done which includes a good bit of foam rolling. muscle flossing, shoulder, hip and ankle mobility work. Feels good. Will also do 2-3 days per week of some cardio work.

Advice on a program for maintenance (for lack of a better word) through the summer?

I'm not really a Phil guy but I thought what happened yesterday was really cool and pretty inspiring. There is no doubt the guy has improved his conditioning and has embraced the long game. Really cool stuff.

I have played the Ocean Course maybe 5 or 6 times and it is as advertised...very hard. It just never lets up.

Anyway, after a few rounds this year here are my statistics along with my equivalent handicap for the Strokes Gained for that particular shot type. For example, the Strokes Gained date of -.19 per drive equates me to an 11 handicap...not good. Similarly the putting stat of .12 strokes gained on putts of 7-21 feet equates me to a +12 handicap...GOOD (but completely unsustainable).

Small sample size, of course, but what is obvious is that my longer game (namely drives and Approach shots 150-200) are seriously lacking at the moment. Unsurprisingly, putting is the strength of my game but again, unsustainable at these levels. I'll post these as warranted or if there is interest for something specific.

I was a Phil fanboy a decade ago and loved to hate Tiger, but the wins by both of them were truly special. They were moments in sport I will remember forever.

The strokes gained stats are very cool, how do you get them? Do you log every shot (175 yards to 20 feet, 20 yards to 3 feet, etc) and it spits out a number? Mine would be pretty similar I imagine. Outperforming in short game and underperforming in long game.

Do you have an app to track each shot?
Or have irons with the monitor in the shaft?

I use Golf Metrics app. Put all of your data after the rounds and it calculates all the detail

Tuesday

Did 30 min of mobility/flex work. Includes foam rolling and band work as well as traditional stretching.

Deload week

Bench Press

5x8 145

DB OH Press

5x8 50's

Played golf in the afternoon. As usual walked and carried. That gets me a solid 6.5 miles on a rather hilly course.

Played relatively well. Still working on improving my ball striking which is coming along. Cost me 2-3 shots but it's getting closer. Pretty excited that I may actually be playing well before too long.

Stepped on a small piece of tempered glass last week which has hampered my ability to do any running. It's in the heel. Only an issue when I strike the heel awkwardly or whatever. Apparently it is likely just a temporary nerve discomfort as the glass appears to have been removed. Doc doesn't think there is anything I can do other than try to stay off it as much as possible.

Ate pretty poorly at the beach this weekend. Back to the grind today.
