Help! I don't know how to feed myself! Help! I don't know how to feed myself!

I live on pizza, pasta, bagels, steaks, burgers, sandwiches, cheese, cakes and chocolate. I never buy meat/fish to eat at home, but will have them if I'm out. These last few years I've been putting on weight fast, and I think I now weigh about 250lbs.

I walk into a supermarket and I honestly have no idea what to buy other than the usual crap. The only thing I'm good at making is pasta sauces, for which I use all fresh ingredients, but even that ends up unhealthy since I use a lot of salt and eat enormous portions. Oh, and I add mozzarella to the sauce.

One of the problems is in the evenings I'm often at a poker club so I end up eating there, and it's very unhealthy stuff.

I binge on food, and always have done. I don't even like eating any more, since I just stuff my face. It's not fun, I'm not able to savour anything any more. Food is just another of my addictions, but I really want to lose weight since it's crippling my self confidence. The way I'm going I'll be dead by 40; or at least even fatter and more unhappy, and of course still single.

The one good thing I do is cycle everywhere. I never take public transport, I always go by bike. But I don't cycle long enough distances to counteract the sheer amount of food I'm ingesting.

I live within cycling distance of great fruit and vegetable markets, butchers, fishmongers, health food shops, and several supermarkets, so it certainly should be possible for me to eat well. But I just have no idea of what meals I could prepare.

Any suggestions? What do YOU eat?

Don't take the direct route. Cycle extra distances. Eat some veggies.
Eat pasta served in a small plate. Wait 15 minutes between servings.
Then your body knows its full and you may stop eating.

The point of a discussion board is to generate discussion. Telling every poster to read the sticky is not conducive to that.

There are three threads on the first page that have an OP asking for very general help/guidance about how to eat. Questions that are so often repeated result in the answer being more diffuse and not as good. There are great tips in this forum spread out over several threads. The faq needs to get better, but directing folks to the faq seems like a pretty good idea. Someone who comes to learn may need to learn (or be reminded) how to help themselves.

Isn't one of the basic rules of the interweb is 1) Read the FAQ

What about having some "official" threads?

Such as "Official Cooking Thread", "Official How To Eat Thread", "Official I am 400 lbs, where do I start? Thread"

That way we could have discussion without having a billion of the same threads?

I wouldn't say what I said to a lot of ppl, but the dude has 8k+ posts and he's like the king of online internet poker forums, so I figure he's read a sticky or two in his day.

That sounds like a good idea Tony. Go ahead and start one and I'm sure it will be popular and valuable.

the official threads will never make anything "official" though, it will just be people giving their opinion, others telling each other how wrong their opinion is, and then people getting upset because someone disagreed with them.

What I'd like to hear is ideas for meals. Sorry if that's in the FAQ...

Read the thread that tsearcher linked to and let us know what you learn and how it failed you.

There's also a link or three about diet in the faq, I think-- the faq is pretty broken, though.

Luckyjimm, stick to 3 meals a day and make them as healthy as possible. I mean eating pizza and burgers is ok (once or twice a week) just in moderation (not eating it day in day out) imo keeping things in good moderation is key to gaining a healthy diet with plenty of exercise; bike rides, running and general gym work im sure you could lose lb's real quick.

Yeah, there is nothing you can ever do to ensure a thread has nothing but gold in it, but a single thread would be a good place to gather up, store, and reference the dozen threads a week by people who haven't read/won't read FAQ's.

It works pretty well with other subjects in other forums, like, movies, reality shows, politics, some celebrity scandal, etc. People get used to dumping it all in one place, and eventually nobody really gets mad at them for putting it there cuz at least they're not spewing it all up and down the first page.

i was in a similar boat, and used to rarely ever cook, and then completely turned my diet upside down. it's definitly not perfect, but it's 1000x better then how i used to eat.

i stopped eating pretty much everything you just said.

i eat a banana in the morning. workout. then eat oatmeal with dried crannberries or blueberries.

i get prepacked salads, and try to eat them with my lunch and dinner every time. i only use olive oil with a splash of sesame oil for flavor, and fresh ground pepper.

then i make some kind of meat i can easily bake. chicken breast. cajun seasoned pork chops, chicken or catfish. and kind of fish filet. steak.

in between the "major" meals, i eat an apple or pear, with natural peanut butter. fat free yogurt. cheese.

i also get those rotissere chickens from the grocery store, and since i think they're so bland i dip the chicken into a bit of sesame oil and ground pepper.
