I do understand the difference and the magnified ability needed to accomplish this vs the difference in time. That is why I chose my words imagine and might be able to. I do think I was off when I said Lebron could do 5 minutes in the bag. But these two guys are in the small group of the most physically gifted humans on the planet, and if not for their specific sports focused training, have the most natural potential to accomplish this.

I don't think you understand the difference between mile running and vertical leap.

I dunno how that translate into a mile run, but I would imagine it is sub 6 minutes, might be able to do close to a 5 minute. I think it would have to be an absolute freakish human to do it.

I would think Lebron could have the potential too, I know 5 minutes mile is in the bag, think he'd have to increase his bench.
When I did high school track all of the guys who were big/fast/good vertical jumpers/explosive absolutely sucked at any distance above 400m. The muscle that provides mass/sprint speed/explosiveness is type II fiber (specifically type IIb) which is absolutely worthless in aerobic activity and would just be dead weight.

If it was humanly possible to accomplish this feat it would probably have to be done by someone who weighs under 200 lbs and was pretty lean, but that would make the bench press part impossible I suppose.

FYI, I've discussed this with gobboboy. He uses to squat and deadlift and has big ass legs.

In reality, Jimmy is quite tall and also built pretty skinny/narrow; he doesn't have a big build at all. His sister is the same I think. So he's not really an Olympic weigtlifter or sumo build.

Maybe chef.

Yeah, whatever. Anything that doesn't start/end at "fat as ****" is errant.

it's pretty difficult to run sub 5-6 min miles. it's even HARDER to bench 2x - 2.5x your own body weight. half of 2p2ers cant even bench their weight.

I'm willing to bet that oodles more than half of two plus two can't bench their weight.

Maybe in the near future when they figure out genetic engineering or cybergenics, this will be possible. Until then: drink your MuscleMax.

You guys are overestimating how hard a 5min mile is. Relating it in any way to a 500lbs bench is ludicrous imo. But yea, probs impossible, and if its not, noone has ever trained in such a way to be in the position to try it anyway.

Raw means no shirt or other assistance equipment, but not no steroids right?

no steroids for a superheavyweight powerlifter is like having a no food rule for them or something.

is this suggestion silly, or could it be that rugby players are good candidates for getting as close as anyone to this goal? obv not the big fat bastards, but someone more of a johnny wilkinson type of build.

If anyone can do this it would almost assuredly be either an NFL linebacker or running back. Not only do these positions select for a combination of upper body strength and conditioning, but also NFL players specifically train to get strong at the bench press and do a fair amount of medium distance running.

I think people are underestimating the chance that a Shawne Merriman or some other genetic freak in the NFL can do this. If you look through NFL combine stats and assume that a reasonable percentage of the guys that rep 225 > 30-35 reps could do a 500 single you will come up with a good number of players which also play skill positions that require a decent conditioning component (WR, RB, LB, FS). I would expect at least one of these guys to be able to run a sub 5:00 min mile.

The think people are missing is that powerlifting is not a mainstream sport. There are tons of D1 and NFL football players that would destroy the competition in a local raw bench press contest but have no interest in it.

I'd say out of that list of people in the link, Vernon Davis would have a legit shot at this.. He's not too big ( only goes like 255-260 ) so he may be able to endure the mile..
I think his problem would be, whatever he had to do to trim time off of his mile, would hurt his chances of BP the 45 more lbs, and vice versa...
I think Thomas Jones MIGHT have a shot @ this also, Supposedly he lifts w/his linemen, and he also may be able to make the mile, seeing as he's not too big either...

255-260 is huge for someone looking to run a fast mile and 5:00 is a fast mile.

I would be surprised if someone who could bench 500 lbs could complete a mile run at a pace quicker than a mild jog.
