I was the same way. I finally did one when I went bungee jumping. Something in your brain just chickens out and turns you sideways.

I can do them on a trampoline now. So much fun once you get it. A pool I've still never tried and still it seems kind of scary.

IF you can bench 1.2 - 1.5 X your weight, you can do a pull-up IMO.

So basically, if you're reasonably strong, chances are you are reasonably strong?

Anyone who thinks most people can do a single pullup or bench 1.2x their weight is bad and should feel bad.

I'd be genuinely shocked if 5% of the population could do either. If we stuck to males between 20-40 who have a gym membership we'd still be well below 50%.

many years ago when I was relatively fat and completely untrained and without sports for years I was asked to do pull-ups(federal armed forces) and barely managed 2.
I felt utterly embarrassed and turned my life around.

seriously how ****ing low do your standards have to be for RESPECTING someone to manage one ****ing pull-up, jesus christ almighty

You almost surely had leg movement/kipping with your "pull ups".

Everyone who thinks a lot f people can do a dead hang, no lower body, pull up....how tall are you?

Saw a bro spotting his bro doing cable curls (I kid you not). It involved bro1 doing standing cable curls with bro2 standing directly behind him, lightly holding his arms a bit above his elbows. I walked quickly past to give them some privacy for their intimate moment.

It's kinda cute when chicks exhibit their EZ curling skills by blocking other stations. Less cute a shaved head man took the Hex bar from the corner and went in front of the dumbbell rack for a set of shrugs. Talk about misusing customs...

I agree with this.

Yeah, I mean, maybe I suck and am kinda fat, but I've been powerlifting for nearly a year and I'm not even that close to a bodyweight bench, let alone 1.5.

What's your starting h/w and starting lifts?

I would imagine a serious year of lifting from a non morbidly obese state should get you past bw in a bench.

I'd say there is a significant % who can't do 5 legit press-ups..

Benching and deadhang pullups are pretty specific things. A bunch of people that are in decent shape from stuff like running, cycling, rock climbing (pullups but not bench) and don't go to the gym for heavy lifting probably can't do one/either/both. And even at the gym it's easy to find people who can't do it either, so 50% sounds ridiculously high.

But then again 20 random males (between which age range) and not being able to find a couple that could sounds incorrect also. Actually pretty hard to guess a correct range.

Even people who think they can do pullups, can't.

This was my original bigger point. I have been in the gym with people who do 5-10 "pull-ups" that are really just glorified kipping pull ups. Not to say they are not hitting relevant muscle groups, but momentum can help a lot.

Maybe they can do a legit one. Maybe not. They probably think they are though.

ya, anytime i see someone doing a touch and go bench I laugh at them. Maybe they can do a legit bench. Maybe not. They probably think they are though

Somewhere the track junkies wonder what % of Americans can run a 5 minute mile...

You guys make it sound a lot harder than it is to do a pull up without momentum lol

6' 3", started at a bench of 105 5RM and a body weight of 214. Currently at a bench of 205 3RM and a body weight of about 230.

Since August of last year, lifting pretty regularly but with a number of weeks off in there. Gaining nearly 100 pounds at better than 2 lbs per week of lifting doesn't seem to bad to me.

Ya seems fine. Doubling lifts in first year I have heard is a decent benchmark for progress(although prob a tad conservative).

It's probably a diet dependent thing that held you back a little. Did you hit macros? Ever do a cut?

Yeah, I shed about 5 lbs at first before hitting a wall. Since, I have been bulking/getting fat. I eat about 180 g protein per day pretty regularly.
