Stupid question from a gym newbie: Is there an easy way to load up the bar with weights for deadlifts?

I don't see any device to prop up the bar temporarily, so have just been wrestling with getting the bumper plates on the bar.

This is my biggest fear, as a 5'9 skinny 160lb guy right now who is just getting started. I see plenty of small looking guys in my gym lifting pretty heavy (250+). I'm sure a lot has to do with just calories consumed to help bulk up, but I imagine people have different body types.

I'm doing SS for 3 reasons, in this order
1. improve health (esp blood glucose) and energy
2. get bigger
3. strength, though this is like #100000. I don't give a **** how much I can lift.

z28,

can't get big without getting strong. You can stay fairly small and still be strong, although that's gonna take a conscious effort to a certain extent and will take longer time. As long as you eat at a surplus and improve your lifts, you'll get bigger. You can always branch out to swollertrophy routines later on. No point now.

This, or ask if the gym has a deadlift jack.

#2 and #3 are flipped for what the majority of guys would say.

I'd much rather get strong then get big - but I recognize that they go hand in hand for the most part. You can strengthen a lot of stabilizer muscles and whatnot and become "strong" because of that, in a different way, without gaining much size. But to actually "get bigger" without being fat, that means strength too.

I usually go to the gym during off hours so there are a ton of extra plates everywhere. I usually just load up 45s first and then the rest with 35s (or in my new gym 55s and then 44s).

And once again I see a chicken-legged guy with medium biceps and a tiny chest showing some new guy how to curl using dumbells, the cable machine and the bar in the smith machine for 1h 20mins.

It doesn't look as cool, but but putting a 20kg on each end and then using 15s works really well for me.

If you prefer to look cool, two options:

1. If your gym has a mix of round and hex plates, ezgame
2. If not, you can put a 45 on, then prop it on a 5lb plate and load the rest.

G4S,

it's understandable. It's quite an investment after all.

It's different in gyms where people aren't deadlifting small cars on a daily basis.

In the gym today I failed on two sets doing 230lbs for my work set. First time someone helped me rack it when the weight was sitting on my chest.

Second time I got it stuck on my chest there was a decent amount of people around but no one attempted to help out. This was either because a) they were too far away to help b) they just didn't notice. So I ended up rolling the barbell down to my waste, sat in an upright position so the bar lay across my upper thigh. I proceeded to do basically a "box deadlift" to get the weight off me. Then I proceeded to roll the bar across the gym floor to the squat rack and did a deadlift to rack it. Basically my own fault for not getting a spotter, but I'm too stubborn to try and no one looked capable to give me a good spot. Luckily it was only 230lbs.

It's not really a great idea to do one 20kg and then 15kgs the rest of the way (assuming 15kgs are smaller diameter for you, which I assume is the point) or something. That can put a lot of strain on the bumper/plate and bar if you're DLing a lot and/or not putting it down really softly.

Of course, if you don't give a **** about the equipment at all (and/or you lift at Evoken's gym and you want to tilt the **** out of him) then go right ahead.

The gym I'm at now has a Deadlift jack. The CG gym I used to go to didn't. There I would either DL it to a rack or prop up a side with a 5lb plate. Either way works well.

Only need the plate roll if your doing >=4 plates imo

No one itt is deadlifting over 9000... and neither is anyone in their gyms.

...although, adding a deadlift jack could result in a whole new class of GGOs...
