Sooooo... New kid at my new gym... I think he is a trainee trainer or something...

I finish a set of squats (lbbs obv) and he comes over and is like

Him: Just a tip. If you look at the ceiling, it will help keep your back straight.
Me: Oh, thanks, was my back rounding?
Him: No, but this will stop it from rounding.
Me: Thanks.

I felt a bit bad, so later while we were both resting I told him I was doing lbbs and how back angles and stuff are different in hbbs than lbbs.

He informed me he had just finished his personal trainer certification, and not one of those crappy 6 week courses either - a whole year.

What a waste of a year, then.

So apparently this Planet Fitness "renovation" caused a mass exodus yesterday of members in my area. The sickest thing about it is PF is banging people with a cancellation fee on the way out the door. I haven't cancelled yet. What's my play?

18 y/o 150lb kid with wife beater deadlifting for like an hour today. He must've done 15 sets of 5. He had full super flexion with the biggest jerk off the floor and then would do a huge over-extension at the top. I felt like helping him but resisted.

If you grunt, allow the plates to make a sound as they touch the floor, or otherwise work out hard enough to make those who don't wish to train hard self-conscious, and then get kicked out, they can't charge you a cancellation fee, right?

Brilliant! Do some clean and jerks and slam it Jon North style with a loud yell...that should get it done.

Some recreational/occasional gym goers are intimidated by stronger lifters. Other feel the better lifters are judging them, like in 8th grade gym class or something. As they are more comfortable and feel less guilty about their lifestyle choices in a non-training environment where full-sugar soda is sold and where pizza, bagels, and Tootsie Rolls are given away, PF is responding to a (sad) market demand.

It's the worst gym chain in America IMO, but at least it might allow some new lifters to learn a little about lifting and then to progress to a real gym. I just hope PF doesn't crowd out real gyms and put them out of business. After all, many towns cannot support multiple gyms.

Yep!

To make it foolproof, he can chalk up first, of course. When done, he should be sure yell, "**** yeah!!!", "that's how you lift!!!", and other such comments. He'll want to bring the gallon of water and giant gym bag, of course.

Young kid (maybe 19-20) was practicing his 1RM backsquat (295 lbs.) today with good form below parallel. He failed three times, but I gave him support saying good try you're on the right track keep trying.

How the ****?

EDIT: Almost forgot. Skinny Chinese dude loaded up four plates on the power rack for squats. As soon as I look over I'm thinking, "NO ****ING WAY." Sure enough, NO ****ING WAY.

His ROM was literally this: |................................................. .......| on your computer screens (give or take a few dots). That's the vertical distance the barbell went. I **** you not.

Sadly, PF is perpetuating the myth of the stronger, more experienced lifters judging and making fun of others in this craptastic commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL73k0uttps

Just started benching and a couple of old bros and tall bro (biggest gym rats fwiw). Old bros are actually kinda big, but tall bro is 6'4 skinny and they talk to most of the regulars and are friendly. As an internet message board poster, of course I hate these guys. They were all three supersetting some tricep extensions and pulldowns of some sort on the cable machine.

I was resting after my 2nd set of 215 and barely was able to press the last rep. I'm kinda hoping to catch one of the bros for a spot because I thought it might be rough and there was no one else around really. I get one of the old bro's and he asks "You want a lift off?". I said no and told him that if it starts to go down, then grab it and rack it. He nodded in acknowledgement. I did my Tate shimmy to get into position. Unracked and pretty much crushed it. Last rep was slow, but I got it. So successful spotted, didn't even "all you" me.

So if somebody breaks one of their amazing rules, one of the "trainers" hit a button and an air siren goes off?? It´s like a Monty Python sketch.

Met someone else doing starting strength today and got a good critique on my form for squats and deadlift. Worked in on some DL sets with him.

Cool story bro.
