My gym has the octagonal ones as well. It sucks for DL cause when the weight comes down it's never in the same exact spot as your previous lift, so you're constantly adjusting to it on your next lift. It's the sacrifice I make for staying at the gym I'm at. The reason I stay is cause the squat rack is almost always empty and available for squats/DL/OHP, regardless of when I get there (but especially early in the morning). Plus I like the gym itself, and there aren't too many other people there to distract me.

Unfortunately I think that rules pretty standard at school gyms

At mine the employees will even interrupt you DURING lifts to put the collars on... Literally mid lift.

We also just got an Olympic weight lifting section with chalk and bumper plates and everything!!! But you have to pass a test AND have an employee sit there and watch you AND its only during super limited hours...

You know that's actually a pretty decent idea and I don't mind it. If you can learn to do an ohs with iron plates you can probably learn how to do anything else.

Am I missing something as to why people wouldn't/don't want to use collars?

Go to gym on Monday's late because its usually busier. Get there and both benches are in full use by 3 guys on each one.... They were repping between 225 and 305 with good form and no broasistance... So I couldn't complain.... Didn't screw up my as rotation because thy were on t for a while

Bench alone with no collars, you get stuck you roll weight off.... Plus it's easier to add weight and go from warm up to working sets

Re: General Gym Observations

I suppose if you workout all alone at home or something with no one around and you're max benching.

lol @ it being easier to add weight though. C'mon now...

That's incredibly insignificant from both a time and effort standpoint.

Re: General Gym Observations

I always use collars if I have a spot (on lifts where one is applicable). It's safer for me and for others around me not to have the plates shifting around during lifts.

I'd NEVER, EVER use collars when benching alone, of course.

Re: General Gym Observations

I don't see the point of collars on low-rep stuff, unless you're incredibly asymmetric. For me the plates shift half an inch at the most on one side, so I know what side I need to concentrate on.

If you're doing high reps, or lubing up the bar in between sets, then collars might be useful.

FWIW I don't use collars on warm-up sets but use them for work sets. Shrug. Also what G4S said - removing/adding collars takes what, 10 secs total?

Can't overhead press at my school gym now with a barbell. Girl who works there said it was obvious I knew how to do it but some others have been losing balance or something...

Ugh

I've never used collars for bench and have never once had an issue in ~15 years

I use them for all other barbell lifts though.

iirc Rip says somewhere that dumbbells are better suited for OHP than a barbell (as long as you have heavy enough dumbbells)

haven't ever seen this, and i'd be very surprised if he did. he does say this about benching in SS, though.

I go to a good gym. I can do anything I want, even bring equipment outside to use (except it is 8 F outside now, so I wouldn't).
