I really need to start a gym reality show with the regs I encounter

-Asian upper body dude who wears straps on every exercise including any kind of press (yes, just today I saw him strap in on incline press)

-duo of epically nerdy Asian kid who wears khakis and long-sleeve polos to the gym, and his buddy homeless looking white kid who wears, no joke, black tee and extremely tight and short black boxer-briefs. boxer-briefs guy is seriously disturbing and offensive because he is also really hairy and homeless-looking.

-group of 5 weak freshmen all taking turns doing half squats with 75-135 in one rack

-machine press kid who pauses when his arms lock out a couple times per set to make sure his triceps are still huge

etc.

I've got a muscle t-shirts are optimal for lifting... I think I might start wearing one.

For reference, this is what aussies would call a muscle t

That's the shirt I'm referencing, not the man-spaghetti-tops. Except I press 110, so my arms are like half that dude's size.

I might buy one to experiment and see if they do indeed irritate when pressing in certain planes. The times that sleeves are noticeably cumbersome is with one-arm stuff, like db snatches.

two cool gym observations tonight. not really "general" but more having to do with small asian men (one was indian - counts right?).

first, i was benching the 100s, and i guess he was impressed with how i sat up with them or something, because he stopped in front of the bench and said "wow... like superman!" fwiw this guy seriously looks as much like gollum as any human can. i should definitely try to get a picture; he's there pretty often.

second was the indian guy. we were both waiting for a barbell to do deadlifts, so when the rack freed up, we ended up there at the same time. i offered to work in, and he agreed even though he knew he would be using less weight. we loaded 135, did some reps. then he helped me add another plate. i did some reps at 225, and then he said he would try. he stood way too far from the bar and it didn't budge. i knew he wasn't super weak, so i told him to get closer to it and try again. he did, and he got it up. the best part: it was just about 2BW for him! he weighs 115, lol.

He tried it again and dropped it a little higher and again looked unsure of himself. I decided to take a chance (AGAINST EVERYTHING THIS THREAD SAYS!!!) and said:

Me "What's wrong?"
IF "Oh I just, I felt my back rounding a bit, and got scared."
Me "Is this the most you have ever deadlifted?"
IF "Yes."
Me "Simple advice - don't be scared. Your form is nearly perfect, just fight through that sticking point."
IF "Really?"
Me "Yes, really."

So he gets a look in his eyes, bends over, takes a big breath, and rips 275 off the ground. He loads it up to 285 and it flies off the ground again. 295 too. He's pretty ecstatic at this point, but I told him to take a 5 min break, then slide on the 2.5 lb weights and go for the big 300, and his eyes just lit up. 5 mins later, with much struggle but good form and very little rounding, 300 came off the ground with no hitching. He was overjoyed, I fist pumped, I think someone cried, I don't remember, it all happened so fast, and a new guy joined the 300 lb club.

Sometimes the good guys win.

This one is hard to describe in text.

A PT was working with his client in the squat rack. A barbell is loaded with 45s and then he straps one band with handles like the ones below on both sides of the bar. It looks like the band is being in place of clips to keep the plates in place, and I am confused.

Then I realize that this setup is being used for band-resisted squats and I am now genuinely curious where he is going to "hook" the band in this commercial gym squat rack. It turns out that he wants the client to pin the band UNDER HIS FEET while squatting. Billiant idea.

The client is confused as well as he steps on the band with one foot and tries to get the other one in position. It slips, and the band snaps hard- making the client even more uncomfortable. He goes for it again, and pins the band under his feet. He then shimmies(?) backward so he can get away from the bar so as to un-rack the bar and begin his squats without lifting his feet from the ground. In the end I guess it kinda worked ok.

seems like a great idea to make the lift more risky and get someone injured

AB that has to be the most dangerous thing so far in the GGO thread and I've read every single post.

Older gentleman using the chest fly machine. Only he was sitting backwards on it and using the back of the elbows to move it, kind of making it a row machine. Not sure what weight he had on it, just thought it was funny looking.

As you get more "in shape" it's not uncommon to sweat more. Your body is just becoming more efficient at cooling itself.

Saw a guy squatting 135 and 185 with near-perfect form. good depth, sat back, lower back extension, etc. As I'm resting though my sets I see him load up 225. still looks pretty good, but a little high. Later he tries going heavier, i dont remember the exact weight but it was def more than 2 plates. This time his depth is terrible.I dont get why he wouldn't try to use better form if hes capable of it on heavy sets.

You don't get why his depth is terrible for a weight that's too heavy for him? trollface?

Sleeveless shirts just don't seem like they'd ever be more comfortable than an appropriately sized t-shirt. One thing I hate about basketball tops (and why I now wear one of those tight underarmour shirts underneath mine) is armpit friction and sweat not being removed like even a cotton tshirt does.

What's the deal with folks who elevate their heels while squatting?
General Gym Observations Quote
10-27-2011 , 09:50 PM
easier to get deep...

Whats the deal with those who don't?
General Gym Observations Quote

im not sure i understand...elevating the heel allows the ankle a more comfortable/easier way to get deep at the bottom of a squat. Some people wear heeled oly shoes and some people stand on a 5lb plate...its much easier to high bar squat and get deep with your heels raised...

low bar squats are often done w/o a raised heel so people can sit back more and keep their weight back on their heel...

Ah, so it's a high bar thing? I rarely see it but occasionally I'll see a dude squatting with his heels on a couple plates, just curious.
