This reminds me of a particularly interesting day for me. Around four years ago, I was in Las Vegas on vacation. I was training at the Gold's on East Flamingo when I spotted a couple of powerlifters whom I had met on my last trip there. It was bench day for all of us. Spurred on by the good lifting, I hit a nice 400 lb raw bench, capping off a (mostly) full recovery from a surgically repaired right pec.
Spoiler:
Unfortunately, that was my last time benching 400 lb. My left pec went shortly thereafter, and the surgical repair on that one was not sufficient to allow for that type of lifting, despite my best efforts. However, that's a different story for a different thread.
After benching, JM pressing, and some other stuff, I spotted a wrist rolling machine that I'd not seen elsewhere. It was like what you described, except it had big fat rollers and a pin-selectable weight stack. I did a few sets and wound up with really pumped up forearms. I joked with the powerlifters with whom I benched about training for a pump, but it really was effective IMO.

Capping this interesting day, as I pulled into the hotel parking lot, a car in the lane next to mine drifted into my lane. I sounded my horn to alert him. He responded by cutting me off and getting out of his car, waving his arms at me. He was a skinny-fat guy, maybe 160 lbs. I was around 240 lb at that time, relatively lean, the previously mentioned forearm pump still in full effect, and feeling pretty confident after hitting the 400 lb bench.

So, I got out of my car and approached him. I looked at him, raised my eyebrows, laughed in an evil sort of way, and demanded to know what exactly he thought he was doing. He meekly replied, "oh...I just wanted to know why you blew your horn." I told him that that he cut into my lane, so he said, "oh, okay...thanks," and tried to get back into his car. LOL. Knowing that he'd have tried to push around someone smaller than himself, let's just say I decided to impress upon him the inappropriateness of his actions.
Spoiler:
I didn't strike him or anything....he saw the wisdom of offering up a heartfelt apology. I believe he learned that there are better ways to handle situations like that in the future.

My normal gym was closed today, so I went to my old gym for the day.

Saw a huge (fat) dude rockin a weird lookin wifebeater that I've never seen before. Infinitely douchier than anything I've ever seen before. Figured this was some new bro technology that I'm unaware of, so I did some stealth recon.

Upon closer inspection, turns out it was actually a women's tanktop. Like the ones with spaghetti straps. It had some frilly pattern on the edges, and some pretty generous cleavage in front. Like this, with more cleavage. And uh...no revolvers.

(BTW I'm not sure you could find a trashier piece of clothing than this revolver tanktop. I guess that's what happens when you shop at punkbabyclothes.net)

Revolver tank should be declared mandatory h&f attire

A ton of Krav Maga and "real life situation" gyms have opened up with the BS marketing that some middle-aged women or out of shape guy, can take down and disable a random male attacker.

The classes are a waste of money until you sink many, many years into how to properly block a punch or disarm so knife wielding dude. Also a lot of the training goes out the window when under the stress of a real life situation.

lol I have a friend who does BOTH crossfit and krav maga and is bothering me to attend with him. I don't know anything about martial arts but it seems to me your criticism is accurate for all forms of self defense? So are you really just critiquing the marketing or is there more useful forms to learn? Reason I was considering it is my wife teaches school in a really ghetto part of town.

When judging a martial art/self defense technique, you have to ask yourself, is any MMA fighter using any of these techniques? If not, then what about it makes it useful for self defense?

Ray has drunk the MMA koolaid and or scores 1 successful troll point.

There are a lot of things that are prohibited in MMA (especially if you're not training for a competitive fight) that are very simple and effective.

Thats why you ask the second question. Otherwise instead of self defense you could just call it ball punching.

most fights irl end in tap outs imo

Yeah doubt my 115 lb wife will be doing anything other than ball punching or eye gouging. So what would be a good list of schools she should look for (in order of preference )? Right now she is in the middle of a 27 year no rape streak that I want to maintain.

Yeah but how many of them are you actually going to use in a fight? Obviously there are varying degrees of "fights" but I'd say way more often than not it's gonna be some drunk douchebag shoving you against a wall at a bar and then trying to punch you.

I'm certainly not going to be kicking that guy in the nuts, gouging his eyes out, or pulling his hair.

Why not?

The most effective self defense is avoidance.

Context man...I asked advice about what technique my wife should learn. Last thing I want her to do is fight fairly. I want her to do whatever is necessary to separate herself from attacker and then escape

Why on earth would you be against using eye gouging or ball punching or whatever if you're in a fight you can't avoid and are obv. gonna lose? I just cannot see a possible benefit from getting your kidneys ravaged at the expense of looking like a pussy.

I'm of the survival school of hand-to-hand combat. This includes *incapacitating the opponent by any means necessary. **** all of that macho bull**** about not hitting a guy in the balls or in the throat. If my life is on the line, you better believe I'm putting the other guy down, whether through a lucky strike or a metal pipe.

*May or may not include lethal techniques.

I've still never been in an irl fight.

...but I'm fairly sure if someone pulled a knife on me and asked for my wallet I would give it to them...

THEN HADOKEN THEM WHEN THEY TURN AWAY!

I learned a very important lesson today: Do NOT expect anyone else in the gym to have any awareness of their surroundings, nor courtesy for that matter.

Cleared an isle in the gym today (very busy) and was doing heavy farmer's walks. People are completely oblivious as to WTF is going on, as they're standing right in my way chatting away as I'm running like mad to the end before the ****ing weights slip from my hands. I had to yell, "MOVE, MOVE! ****! SON OF A BITCH!" and one of the dumbbells slammed against some machine as I was moving past.

Three minutes later. They're in the way chatting again. FFFFFFFUUUUUUU

So you expect to be able to take a whole aisle in the gym for yourself while it's very busy? Yea, it's everyone else's job to watch for you, got it.
