So Im at vacation in Sydney and there is a 24/7 gym down the street called Anytime Fitness that have a free 7 day trial so I went there and omg...

First thing I see when I walk in is 7-8 people on the treadmills, great sign...

So I walk down to the only rack and start benching, I ask a guy with a huge upper body and no legs that has done different back exercises for at least the last 40 minutes or so. This was the first time I got to experience the full out bro spot. I ask him for a spot and say "5 reps, hopefully shouldn't be a problem" and he of course starts touching the bar on the first rep and when I rack the bar after 5 reps he very disappointingly says "is that all man?"

The only other person using the rack during the time I was there was a guy benching 60kg without full ROM.

There are 2 trainers with a client each and there was some pure gold

Trainer #1 is female and her client is a 5-6 and at least 220 pounds woman and obv in horrible shape. Highlight tape included assisted 1kg flyes and DB bench, the best part however was when they approach a bench and she says "oh no not again" when she has to do 5 reps of very slow set ups. They also discussed her diet and she said she had a tuna salad for lunch "because meat is bad for you" and the trainer agreed.

Trainer #2 is male and in his 40s and his client is a very very thin woman that is maybe 30 years old. The first thing they start talking about is her goals and he says "is your goal to get toned? or slim down (if she slimed down she would become anorexic)?" then they start doing different machines and before each exercise he show what muscles are being used by touching her and then holding his hands on her during the whole set. Sexual harassment wasn't far away...

Running good finding a 24/7 place with barbells imo. There are two 24/7 chains in my city and neither have barbells... My work also has a 24/7 commercially operated gym with no barbells...

Brag: my gym has 2 separate locations, one of which is 24/7 and filled with 7 racks with Eleiko bars and plates. Also has a stereo with a PC hooked up running Spotify to blast whatever music you want.

Beat: the 24/7 location is hardly used at all, owner will be broke within a couple of years.

upon entering the gym yesterday, sounded like gunshots from upstairs it was so loud. GO upstairs to find two bros DLing so hard they looked like they were bouncing a basketball on a rubber mat, saying how awesome it was to get "6 reps so easy with 360". I doubt they even used a single muscles until the bar was half way up their legs from bouncing it.

Given that no one spots correctly, is there a reason not to just tell people flat-out what you actually want? I mean, I wouldn't assume anyone would not help on spotting as I'm pretty sure the colloquial definition is (assist on everything).

Lol. Gotta get on the same page as to what's meat imo. That's pretty funny. Guess she also thinks she's a vegetarian.

I'd assume this is pretty standard as a trainer. Like, one of the main perks.

He just is standing like a 4 feet away from me off the right. Finally, after a minute, I'm like, "um...you can get behind me if you want?" He's like, "oh okay!"

Me: I'm going to do as many as I can get...I'm expecting about 10. I'll let you know if I need help.

Him: Gotcha. Do you want me to do a one hand spot or a 2 hand spot?

Me: Uh....it doesn't matter. (no longer planning to do AMRAP)
Seems like he never spotted someone before but due to feeling pressure being in a gym, didn't want to proactively speak up about it. Feel sorry for him. Also, would have been really helpful to teach him what a real "spot" is, making sure he realized it differed from "assistance".

I'm gonna be in a real gym for the first time in about a week. You guys make me nervous, hopefully there aren't too many GGO posts about me.

WRT spotting:

left hand under right hand over and just don't touch the bar unless they need it?

Squatting and failing reps: Do I just stand so there's enough room for me to get the barbell over my head and not hit someone? I saw that karate kid fail a squat and bailing looks scary as ****

I don't even put my hands anywhere near the bar unless they are struggling (note: not counting a lift off, but I only give one of those if they request one). I also tell them that if I touch the bar I'm going to rack it, just to be clear and avoid any confusion.

I can't really comment on the failing a squat part, but your question has self-fulfilling prophecy written all over it.

It also has humiliation and trip to the ER written all over it.

If you're in a squat rack/power rack, failing a squat just means leaning forward until the bar hits the pins/bars and then you're fine. It might be loud and/or embarrassing, but no ER trip necessary.

Yes it does a little bit I've never failed a squat rep, just a set, so it's difficult for me to comment knowledgeably. This may slightly depend on what type of gym equipment is there. If you are in a power rack, you should be able to set up the safety rails to the bottom of your ROM so if you fail, just drop it off your back. If you are on a weightlifting platform it should be fairly easy to just drop the weight off your back and move forward.

Basically says what I said:

Some vids posted of fails:

Dumping it backwards is generally safer both from an impact standpoint and a "back not going into flexion" standpoint.

I fail like downtown, release arms and fall to knees while arching my back a bit. A lot easier with low-bar because the bar just rolls right off (his high-bar stays on the shoulder blades).

I've never failed while good-morninging, but in that case I'd be extra quick with arms to not faceplant.

It is really annoying when people do this. You should only touch the bar when you (un)rack it (if he wants that) or if it completely stops its vertical motion at which point you just lift it up!

When failing a squat I just let go, stand up/step forward, and let the bar fall. No need to lean in any weird way imo.

Doesn't this fall down your back? Especially when you're in ATG position.

God getting stuck in ATG position now seems like the scariest thing that can happen ever.

wtf

Your leaned so far forward and in such an awkward position it seems like getting the weight to go back far enough to clear your hips might not be that easy and if you don't get out of the way in time...

:\

Unrelated discussion:
I hear leg pressing is pretty cool.

EDIT: Just watched the videos, pretty hilarious how effortless that looked. Still, I might just squat 135 and dump it on purpose to get comfortable with the idea so when it happens for real I'm at least aware of what's happening.

If you're in a rack just set the pins about 3 inches from your rock bottom of the squat, then you can kinda lean forward a tad and set the bar down with ease. Its really not even remotely scary, you'll be fine.

Heres JF dumping it backwards http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-XekxOdrBk

This is kinda what I was talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFDVA...eature=related

If you're talking about the Frank Yang video, he did not fail that rep.
