Doesn't a record have to exist to break it?

There's a skinny little Indian guy at work that weighs 118 (with his clothes on). We had him weigh himself for kicks while we were doing the weigh-in for the biggest loser competition.

I don't know. I was responding to Soulman's post. They guy is definitely not a dwarf. He's just a 2/3 scale model of a grown human male.

After my first workset of BB floor presses a fat girl that works behind the desk comes up to me.

"Do you need help moving the racks up so you can use a bench?"

I was hyperboling it up obviously, my point being a grown man that weighs 115 lbs must be very short and very skinny on top of that. Can't be many % of the population.

I get a fair amount of douchey behavior my way at the gym, mainly because I"m kind of a hardass about things. Someone asks "how do I get bigger" (usually some super underweight kid), I say "Do the main lifts, squats, dead, press, bench, clean and snatch, heavy. Add weight each time you come into the gym. Eat double what you eat now. You should check out Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe".

They usually start to argue with me about some stupid ****, basically trying to avoid doing hard stuff thats foreign to them. THen I say "Hey, you asked me a question, I gave you my answer. You want a debate, find someone else. I know this stuff works, it works for everyone. You can either do it, or not, I really don't care."

Also there is the "If you don't squat your a pussy" comment I made. TO which someone said "Well I don't squat". My response, "You are a pussy", then I squatted 405 for 5.

I don't but up with people bull**** and I tell them they are wrong when they try to convince me of **** that doesn't work. I don't think what you look has any bareing on the effectiveness of your training program or you athletic ability. Basically, I'm the antithesis of most people there and I let them know it when they talk to me. I don't mind getting ****, I hate the passive aggressive bull****.

There are a few trainers there I like. I spent about 20 minutes with one of them today showing him different trunk excersizes (steinborn, 2 hand any how, contact twist, windmills, 1 armed work, a bunch of stuff he has never seen before). He then said he has rarely seen other trainers do more than them machines, and never go into detail like I did with him.

With 3 trainers and their clients within ear shot I said "Is it really the trainers fault? If you told the average client "You are going to squat, press and deadlift heavy 3 times a week" they would never come back. WHy? Because it's hard and most people don't like to do hard things. If they did, they wouldn't be out of shape. Besides, there are only a handful of trainers here that could coach those excersizes anyway".

I really don't care what people think of me. Makes life fun.

I've always found it interesting that the take no ****/suffer no fools tough guys take such pride in their behavior, when in reality it's absurdly easy and self indulgent to act this way.

I'm sure it's more popular now than ever, though.

This. What's the point of having this attitude? I understand not wanting to make friends with everyone in the gym, but being willing to brawl over even the smallest weight room sleight seems incredibly stupid/immature.

there are 2-3 guys at my gym who just started working out about the same time that my gf and i started (3 months or so). they are fully into protein, NO, Xplode mode, and probably a bunch of other GNC stuff. my guess is they are between 20-25. normally we ignore them, though privately i explain to my gf why their exercises suck. they do some ******o combination of bench, incline, decline, presses and curls. something like 6 sets of 10-15 reps each and not a lot of weight at all. their forms sucks too, but they do fist-bumps a lot afterwards.

anyways, since my gf and i are doing squats and dls, i am sure they've noticed us. last time, they were in the only power cage at the gym doing DLs VERY-VERY poorly. same deal, lots of sets and lots of reps, horrible form.

i have no problem with uninformed people hurting themselves, but if this is interfering with my workouts, i feel like i should say something. if they are going to take up the only place where i can do squats, they should at least do the exercise properly and try to get done in a reasonable amount of time.

so, should i say something or not? just correct their horrible spine position on DLs, point them to some programming literature.

it couldn't hurt to offer some advice, it's all in the delivery. "you're doin it wrong!" will not get very far ldo. it sounds like you're genuinely concerned (i know the feeling!)

from past coaching experiences (baseball, basketball) i'd start off with the cliche "you demonstrate some nice power," something complementary without sounding too cheesy, then say something like "can i offer some advice?" demonstrate, and tell 'em you want to help them prevent any injury, etc etc. sounds cheesy but it's one approach that worked for me.

Some googling indicates the raw record in the 114 lb weightclass is 391 lbs. So our man has a long way to go, but 105 lbs on the first try is a good start.

But along with the hard ass attitude, I try to help as many people as I can. Makes me feel good and it's one less person who will curl in the squat rack.

Another time at the gym, there is a friends of mine who was starting olympic lifting. He was working out in running shoes. I told him to get squatting shoes, but he was low on funds so I told him to wear his dress shoes. Did it and loved it (not as much as the weightlifting shoes he has now, but still).

So we are working out together and he's wearing black dress shoes with white socks, shorts and a t shirt, snatching or Cleaning. Someone walks by and says something about his shoes and gives him a bit of hell for it.

I ask "Hey, how much do you snatch?". He backs up alittle and gives a weak "what". "I said, how much do you snatch?" I demonstrate, kids says he doesn't. "How much do you clean?" I demonstrate. "No I don't do that either". "Squat, how much do you squat?". "185", "how deep" he shows me a quarter squat.

I then say "You don't do the olymipc lifts and you squat like a pussy ass little girl and yet you think you are entitled to an opinion about what kind of footwear one should wear while snatching, cleaning and squatting like a man? If you knew anything you would understand that a dress shoe has a slightly elevated, incompressible heel, which is the halmarks of a good shoe for weight training. Now take your uninformed arrogant ass somewhere else, we're working here and frankly don't have the time for your ****"

I guess I am old or fat/jolly or something, but I rarely if ever get into situations where I have to decide whether to be very aggressive/confrontational or not, not that I can't see how it would be useful to sometimes take that stance.

That or people just don't tend to pick on the 6'6" 250lb guy.

Ie. I once saw someone jogging at night wearing what looked like miniature christmas lights to allow cars to see him and although my friends and I are aware its probably a smart idea we found it pretty funny. If one of us made a comment and he yelled at us a bunch while saying he is much faster/safer than we are and therefore above criticism it would have been a pretty sweet story.
