Eat double what you eat now. You should check out Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe".
They usually start to argue with me about some stupid ****, basically trying to avoid doing hard stuff thats foreign to them. THen I say "Hey, you asked me a question, I gave you my answer. You want a debate, find someone else. I know this stuff works, it works for everyone. You can either do it, or not, I really don't care."
Also there is the "If you don't squat your a pussy" comment I made. TO which someone said "Well I don't squat". My response, "You are a pussy", then I squatted 405 for 5.
I don't but up with people bull**** and I tell them they are wrong when they try to convince me of **** that doesn't work. I don't think what you look has any bareing on the effectiveness of your training program or you athletic ability. Basically, I'm the antithesis of most people there and I let them know it when they talk to me. I don't mind getting ****, I hate the passive aggressive bull****.
There are a few trainers there I like. I spent about 20 minutes with one of them today showing him different trunk excersizes (steinborn, 2 hand any how, contact twist, windmills, 1 armed work, a bunch of stuff he has never seen before). He then said he has rarely seen other trainers do more than them machines, and never go into detail like I did with him.
With 3 trainers and their clients within ear shot I said "Is it really the trainers fault? If you told the average client "You are going to squat, press and deadlift heavy 3 times a week" they would never come back. WHy? Because it's hard and most people don't like to do hard things. If they did, they wouldn't be out of shape. Besides, there are only a handful of trainers here that could coach those excersizes anyway".
I really don't care what people think of me. Makes life fun.
But along with the hard ass attitude, I try to help as many people as I can. Makes me feel good and it's one less person who will curl in the squat rack.
Another time at the gym, there is a friends of mine who was starting olympic lifting. He was working out in running shoes. I told him to get squatting shoes, but he was low on funds so I told him to wear his dress shoes. Did it and loved it (not as much as the weightlifting shoes he has now, but still).
So we are working out together and he's wearing black dress shoes with white socks, shorts and a t shirt, snatching or Cleaning. Someone walks by and says something about his shoes and gives him a bit of hell for it.
I ask "Hey, how much do you snatch?". He backs up alittle and gives a weak "what". "I said, how much do you snatch?" I demonstrate, kids says he doesn't. "How much do you clean?" I demonstrate. "No I don't do that either". "Squat, how much do you squat?". "185", "how deep" he shows me a quarter squat.
I then say "You don't do the olymipc lifts and you squat like a pussy ass little girl and yet you think you are entitled to an opinion about what kind of footwear one should wear while snatching, cleaning and squatting like a man? If you knew anything you would understand that a dress shoe has a slightly elevated, incompressible heel, which is the halmarks of a good shoe for weight training. Now take your uninformed arrogant ass somewhere else, we're working here and frankly don't have the time for your ****"
