how much more efficient are you if you are using barbells too? does that mean what I can achieve in 6 months with just machines/dumbbells would take you 5 months with barbells? the broscientists that you make fun of for their elitist, i'm right your wrong atittude are a mirror image of yourself just with different ideas. there are alot of right ways to work out and not many wrong ways if you are putting forth effort

What is wrong with you? It has NOTHING to do with the equipment available. DBs and a room to jump/run around in is more than adequate. Not being able to "grunt" or exert yourself close to your limit is the problem. That's not working out. That's dicking off.

You even said it yourself:

DBs at planet fitness go up to like 60lb, which is fine for the press for a little while. too light for everything else.

pretty sure you can get away with loud-ish exhaling and light grunting.

Maybe. It would be fine for developing work capacity and cardiotarding CrossFit style if you wanted to, plus you could do plenty of Ross Enemait's stuff. However, I doubt that DB swings and snatches and other rapid work capacity-driven stuff is going to be taken well considering the guy in the video in this thread got yelled at for doing semi-loud curls.

I live on the treadmill between December and February. I exercise after work and have no desire to run in the dark, where it could be icy, and below 40 degrees. I do somewhat agree from spring through the fall.

I ran a marathon last year, training from April - November, and I only ran on a treadmill maybe 3-4 times. Once when it was the third straight day of torrential rain, and a couple days when I was recovering from mild injuries suffered from long runs, and my body couldn't take the cement/hills.

Question for the weight lifters: I have never done squats. I've always had pretty strong legs from running and soccer. However I figure I should start because I'm not playing soccer anymore.

I'm not a big guy - around 5'9", 170 lbs., I can bench maybe 185-200 (I do sets of 10 up to 165). At what weight should I start trying to squat? A range is fine, I am really clueless when it comes to this.

Start with the bar, do 5 reps, then add 20 lbs and do 5 more reps. Keep doing this until your form starts to break down a little and the bar slows down. That's your starting work weight.

I am still keeping the log because I still want to lose weight. I don't care if people are critical or mean. I do care when they use the thread to attack me during an unrelated conversation. It's stupid, and it makes you look stupid. There are about 6 other posters in this thread who disagreed with what I said about Planet Fitness and did it without being complete tools.

Okay, I take that back - I've always had muscular, not necessarily strong legs. Since I rarely do any leg work I have no idea of their strength.

it's not really about leg strength misconceptions, it's strength misconceptions in general. I too was a "strong legs" donk (basketball + soccer). Now I have a decent case for strong legs.

anyway, what MW said is correct.

You don't want to lose weight, or else you'd do it. It's that simple. And I think the existence of that "log" makes you look much stupider than SHOT using your failures to implicate your authority on all gym-related matters.

I'm not prepared to say that, but I do think Tony P. clearly either (1) does not really want to lose weight or (2) has some kind of diagnosable psychological condition.

When you are that much overweight, and you have firmly decided to lose weight, it is easy to do it. Just eat less food than you normally do. It's that simple.

If you can't do this then you have some kind of food addiction or depression or something that you self-medicate by eating.

Part of the reason I say this is you clearly do understand how to lose weight, and you know how many calories you consume because you count them. So you can't plead ignorance like a lot of people who unsuccessfully try to lose weight.

So yeah I think on some level your log is BS.

Thank you...

I brought up your log to bring reference into what the mindset of the only person defending Planet Fitness is like.

...and TonyP you have shown no inclination over the last 18 months that you even want to lose weight. Your log is merrily a defense mechanism, and a system so people can pity you, because youre "trying"...If you really wanted to lose weight at some point over the last 18 months you would have stopped stuffing your fatass with burgers, m&m, beer, simple carbs, salami, cakes and cookies, fries, exx..but you havent!

What Wombat said, but if I were to bet, I'd guess the 150-200 range for 5 reps.

WTF are you serious this is a terrible ballpark and if you set your expectations that high before you even begin squatting you will not be learning how to squat correctly.

Better to start too low than too high imo. You'll be adding weight quickly enough to it.

Yeah, 200 would be laughable for all but the extremely genetically endowed (strength/mobility/coordination wise).
