I did bicep curls in the squat rack yesterday with 2 other guys. All racks were filled at that time.... I understand its bad practice and frowned upon but I didnt care at that moment. We didnt take long to finish our sets so I didnt think it was that bad. I now think its only bad if it takes a long time. Actually, I think it depends on the situation. I now have the opinion that curling in the squat rack is bad only under certain situations.

I don't care about your gym so I'm not mad at you, but I am curious about it.
Why is that where you need to do curls? How much weight are you curling? Is there no other place where you can do it in your gym? Mine has two preacher curl stations that will hold an oly bar if for some reason you can't load up the straight curl bar with enough plates.
I mean in this situation it sounds the but low for when it would be okay. Three guys doing how many sets each? The other racks full? When is it not okay?
Straight bar curls and some gyms just don't have the shorties so they just decide to take a full sized Olympic bar and use it. In the rack because moving weights from place to place is hard.
I mean there is no point in leaving a rack without a bar anyway. I don't have a good reason why you can't curl in the rack if there is not another option in your gym to do straight bar curls.
Come to think of it, I have done incline curls on one of the incline barbell bench stations before when all of the portable benches were in use, so I guess I'm just as bad. It just doesn't fit the cliche.

Please tell me you were using dumbbells and all 3 of you were in the rack at the same time and that there are pictures.
So the three of us did 4 sets each and the last set was a super drop set... Not sure what the proper name for it is. Anyhow, we started with the empty barbell and would gradually go up in weight and lower the amount of reps for subsequent sets. Most weight that was loaded was 115 lbs. I mean, I hardly ever do curls but that day I felt like jumping in that day. There are other places we could have done curls instead of the squat rack so we were probably being inconsiderate. I usually just do squats, good mornings, and presses in the rack. I guess bottom line is that I dont see anything wrong with doing curls with the barbell in the rack if nobody is waiting to do squats, presses, etc.
My gym is a bit anal about chalk so it was a delight when I walked in today and saw a bar just covered in chalk and then I saw some guy (working out, not staff) walk up to it with paper towels and a spray bottle and methodically clean it. He then used that bar to...deadlift
Yesterday I saw a competitive powerlifter and a strongman doing curls in the squat rack. It was with an axle, and considerable weight, and there was nobody else in the gym which has 3 squat racks, so I decided to pass on lecturing the the two behemoths about it. Barely.
Guy sitting on a box with the pins set below the height of his lockout so that it is impossible to lockout and he just bangs the bar into the pins every rep.

Spoiler:
It wasn't EV
Could be an isometric exercise. Was he just banging into the pins then dropping, or was he leaving the bar there and continuing to press?
Short guy with enormous quads doing the most incredible yelling with each rep at the squat rack. I don't usually care even though it can be startling when you are not prepared.
He had headphones on and was yelling "****!!!" On every rep. Then he wrapped up and got a spotter and did a clean rep of 595. The scream he gave out made the guy at the front desk come running thinking he got hurt.
The best part is when he was doing the eff word reps a salesperson was giving a tour to a prospect couple. The worst part is it was a nice day so a lot of little kids were walking through on their way to the pool with their family and were exposed to it.
It would be impossible to be louder, for reference.

lol. That sounds like a former teammate of mine. Did he smell like garlic from halfway across the gym?

Yep. Just banging it into the pins like he was doing a normal EV-esque press. No isometrics.
Side note: He was under the instruction of one of the gym PTs. I think he was using 35kg.
eta: Yep. 35kg. Set up can be seen to the left of my vid, although unfortunately no vision of the actual lift occuring. Dude can almost be see to the very left of screen doing some one arm med ball throws. I guess it was power day or something...
All the more hilarious that it's on one of those squishy foam boxes.

Make sure you come back next week for when he hits 600!
