I think Gary has too much pre, Post 2011 ASB Derrick Rose in him. (Avoiding contact) He gets to the rim a lot, just doesn't get the calls.

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

i think that's mostly from not playing any organized bball from the age of 17-24. i got used to playing pickup where people dont call nearly as many fouls, so i usually just tried to finish w/o contact or give it up before the contact arrived. after playing a few leagues last year, i'm getting back into playing a ref'd game and i'm going to try and initiate more contact/get to the line more when driving

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

Yeah, it's actually counter-intuitive to what one thinks of as a "streetballer" but being an aggressive offensive player in pickup games is penalized due to no foul shots, while being a James Jones who is a pussy and has never made contact in his life is massively rewarded (playing 2's and 1's). In reffed games against kids who you are quicker and stronger than, you really should be getting a half step on them and looking to get to the rim with contact. Make sure to scream "And1!" as you are being hacked, regardless of whether the shot is going in.

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

8/10
Bench 45x5x2 95x5 135x4 145x3 155x2 160x5x3
deadlift 155x5 221x3 265x3 285x2 295x3

Bench felt really good, would have gone for 162.5 if I had had DFII's washers to add on. Deadlift felt pretty good too, I was a little rushed at the end tho because I had somewhere to go so I probably didn't take enough rest time in between the last couple sets. Heading to turning stone now for a poker tournament so unfortunately I won't be able to lift at my regular gym til sept 1

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

quick update-
hyper-extended (i think/hope it's not broken) my left wrist a few weeks back playing bball, i tripped twice during a game outside and braced myself in the same spot. it didn't hurt too much the day of, but it has been a nagging injury since then. i've iced it some (tho not right after it happened since it didn't really hurt..stupid me), but it hasn't really helped, not really sure what to do about it.

i haven't done any lifting since the first week of august when my gym closed and only played bball once since the injury (wrist felt meh while playing, i basically did everything with my right hand). rec league starts up tonight and i'm gonna give it a go, hopefully the wrist doesn't give me any problems, if it does then i may go see a doctor soon and get it x-ray'd . i'm heading to atlantic city thursday so i'll miss a few bball games and wont be able to start lifting til next week sometime. hopefully time off from bball (and playing video games probably didn't help either) will let it heal fully so i can get back to lifting

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

i'm sure the 2 or 3 readers besides ppl i talk to on a regular basis thought i was giving up forever...BUTNAHHHH

update- went to see my primary care physician about my wrist about a month ago and instead saw a nurse practitioner because the doc had to deal with a patient with a medical emergency...now i haven't been to a doctor's office in at least 5-6 years so i didn't really think much of it, but i guess maybe she wasn't 100% qualified to diagnose it. she told me it was tendinitis and gave me a brace to wear and told me to ice it heavily for two weeks and it should be better, if not then she'd send me to a wrist/orthopedic specialist... 2 weeks later, it still hurts despite wearing the brace 24/7 and icing 3-4x/day.

so i call her and she sets up an appointment with a hand/wrist specialist and an x-ray. he tells me that there's nothing broken, but there is some ligament damage and some bleeding. so he gives me some puddy and a stretching band to do exercises with every other day, basically trying to strengthen the area before i go back to lifting or bballing (sigh). he said it could be 6-8 weeks which is an eternity since this thing happened all the way back in august, but hopefully doing this stuff and wearing the brace at night/random times will help it to fully heal and maybe i'll get back to our rec league team for the playoffs. it has been feeling a little better lately so i'm hoping that the 6-8 weeks is extremely conservative and i'll be good to go in 2-4, but only time will tell. if it's still hurting in 2-3 months he said i'd need to come back in for an MRI

oh yea, so since the injury i've basically been doing nothing athletically, it's really frustrating. i've been extremely restless so i started going to the gym to ride the stationary bike or jog around the track. hopefully doing this will make sure i'm not in terrible shape when i come back to bball/lifting

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

In addition to cardio you could probably also do back raises/glute-ham raises/bodyweight walking lunges. That should help somewhat in maintaining at least some level of strength in the lower body. Also do abs.

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

There's a ****ing ****load he should be doing. Arms crossed front squats, single arm kettlebell swings, hip belt squats, glute bridges, planks, etc. He's still at a point where he could be getting a stronger lower body without doing any back squats or deadlifts, but I'm can't make him go if he doesn't want to.

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

GS,

Not sure what kind of insurance you have or availability to see different doctors, but going straight to an orthopedic would have been ideal in this situation. I actually trust my physical therapist more than any doctor I've been to for making diagnoses, but it's hard to find someone like that.

In primary care, all they are ever going to tell someone with a generic wrist/ankle/knee/shoulder/anything problem is to rest, ice, splint, and ibuprofen for pain. The vast majority of these ailments go away on their own, hence why this vague treatment is acceptable in the medical world. If it doesn't get better in 2-3 weeks, they then will have you follow up with orthopedics. As I said, depending on your insurance, you can hopefully just skip this step in the future.

As far as stuff you can be doing right now, jogging/biking will burn some calories and help with general fitness and restlessness you have from not exercising, but you can be far more basketball/athletic specific by doing agility drills, suicides, sprint repeats, backwards sprints, box jumps, etc. Also the stuff that Doug said. Just go to the gym with him, he will help you figure out a good workout plan.

Doug,

Roid rage, bro?

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

thx db, i really appreciate the advice. i'm basically a huge noob when it comes to medical care, i've never really had an injury of any kind that gave me reason to seek help. i'm not sure about my insurance policy either, i'll have to check into that

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

I'm going to go out on a limb (lol) and say that getting as many muscle adhesions out surrounding the area may help. I'd guess it's important to not put pressure directly on the parts that really hurt (like torn ligaments, but actually, a skilled ART practitioner might from what my chiro has worked on before), but if you're doing strengthening things and need to get things stronger, you for sure are creating muscle adhesions which are then gonna keep pulling on stuff.

I'm not sure what your diagnosis actually is now, but for a lot of "tendonitis" type things (or even carpal tunnel syndrome), soft tissue work can completely get rid of the problem over time and for sure can help tons.

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

the wrist/hand specialist said it wasn't tendinitis, basically just ligament damage (dont remember exact wording), but said it wasn't a big tear or anything

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

been doing rehab stuff (puddy exercises and band stretching) for about 10 weeks now and my wrist is feeling 90+%, tho the pain has moved a little bit into my hand near my palm so i've been doing more grip stuff with the puddy to try and help that. i played bball a few times with our rec league teams at the end of the season and felt fine playing but didn't do anything else bc i was worried about pushing it too hard too soon.

i decided to restart lifting today and figured i'd just do all my big lifts (squat, bench, ohp, deadlift) and see how the wrist felt. i was able to do them all w/o much/any pain except for one rep on bench when i loaded up 85lbs and tweaked it by not keeping it stiff enough on the way down. according to DFII i wasn't keeping my wrists stiff/strong enough in most barbell exercises and that's going to lead to me re-injuring the wrist so i focused on that today. i'm going to continue to do some light lifting to test out my wrist more before fully getting into greyskull lp. i'll also continue to do the wrist exercises for a while

1/7
squat 45x5x2 95x5x2 135x5 155x5
bench 45x5x2 65x5 85x1
ohp 45x5x3
deadlift 133x5 155x5

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

Forgot to post yesterday
1/7 & 1/8 played pickup bball
1/9
Squat 45x5x2 *95x5 *135x5x3
Bench 45x5x2 *65x5 *85x5 *95x5

Gonna keep moving up very slowly until I feel 100% and then get into gslp

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

Sigh
1/13
Squat 45x5x2 95x5 135x5 155x5 165x5 165x3
Deadlift 133x2

Squats felt good to start, legs felt great, then the wrist started feeling off around 155 but I thought I could get through it... Did not happen. On the 3rd rep of 165 the wrist just hurt too much so I just racked it. Figured I might be able to do deadlift a since they don't involve the wrists a lot but there was too much pain to complete those too. Not sure what I'm gonna do now, I'll probably have to go see the hand/wrist specialist again and see what he says...sigh

Re: Gary Stevenson's SS/bball log

Quick bball question since this is the highest bball log on the page.

I do this reverse layup without using the backboard; is that super bad? It's pretty high percentage with the competition I'm facing, but I feel like I shouldn't be doing it because nobody advocates it. I guess a more accurate description would be driving down baseline and doing a small hook from the other side? The only downside I see is since I have to twist my neck to see the basket I might get slammed into with my head turned and take a mean hit.
