it's the best dumb girl teenager comedy/drama type movie IMO

Have watched it a couple times years ago and was fairly amusing. Some good laughs.

Also didnt think it was too hard to brew just following directions. Made some pretty delicious clones with little to no knowledge.

Although are you talking about hard to create your own original brew?

I love me some Josh Brolin but did not want to see the remake after it got ** reviews. Now I'm just going to try and forget that it was ever remade.

I'm not exactly sure how you get Shawshank being a "cookie cutter feel good movie with a formulaic approach typical of the era and genre." What genre is that? Can you list a few other movies that fit the same genre?

Re: Hanks -

Shawshank was 1994. Notable Hanks movies from the same time:
A League of their Own 1992
Sleepless in Seattle 1993
Philadelphia 1993
Forrest Gump 1994
Apollo 13 1995
Toy Story 1995

First off, I'm not sure which of these movies you think hasn't endured or thrived over time? They're pretty much all considered iconic. If we narrow this down to the ones with like, dominant male leading roles or ensembles that aren't cartoons, we get Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, and Apollo 13. I don't get the butthurt. Which of these do you think has been hugely snubbed by history? I guess it would have to be Philadelphia?

In conclusion, I think that a reasonable amount has been splooged over Forrest Gump and Apollo 13, and that you're largely, as accused, coming in in the range of obnoxious coffeehouse hipster guy.

That said, the pivot from slapstick comedy into more serious roles + comeback from the career suicide attempt of Joe Versus the Volcano directly into that run of movies above (and continued pretty steadily since) is one of the more impressive career arcs ever. Hanks is great.

Saving Private Ryan
Glengarry Glenn Ross
He Got Game
Training Day
Good Will Hunting

'Favourite' for me are those movies you've watched a thousand times over because the best scenes are so good they still get you:

- Damon pwning long hair in the bar;
- The opening sequence in SPR;
- The look of fear and desperation on Lemmon's face as he's getting called into the office;
- Every ****ing bit of He Got Game aside from the hooker love plot bull****;

Training Day is the perfect no fat, no bull**** movie.

Smokin aces is a legit good shootemup movie

CR, I speak for the forum. Pls list top 5 movies OAT so that I and my art-house coffeeshop friends (jk we roast our own beans) may have a giggle.

Philadelphia, Forrest gump and Apollo 13 made exactly zero lists itt while shawshank made half of them give or take. This holds throughout. Philadelphia was a far superior movie.

suburbia... alleys? wtf. Chicagoland is a dump.

Denzel is so so good. My favorite of his is Fallen.

crash,

while a fair enough point, you shouldn't disdain Shawshank because of it.

I do really like Apollo 13. I forget what movie I was comparing it to recently. Oh. Argo. Argo sucked. Apollo 13 was good.

Gump is meh. Way meh compared to Shawshank.

Never saw Philly. Didn't want to catch AIDS.

This reminds me of another favorite, Lilja 4ever. Don't think I've ever felt ****tier after watching a movie though. Theme: exploitation of underage girls in Russia. Still worth watching but you def need to be in the mood (whenever that would apply). Made by one of my countrymen too.
02-17-2014 , 03:37 PM
Have you seen Irreversible? If Lilja 4 ever made you feel awful, you might not want to watch that.

Grave of the Fireflies also ranks pretty high on most depressing movies list. It's one of the very few animated movies that aren't completely awful.
02-17-2014 , 03:39 PM
No, I remember avoid seeing that. Afaik it's not as good either?

Shawshank and Argo are about the same for me. Unremarkable but watchable.
02-17-2014 , 03:42 PM
It's been ages since I saw either of them, but I think they both go into similar average/good category. Nothing spectacular but worth watching imo. (lilja and irreversible)

That appointment to see surgeon (dr cole) is this thursday. pretty nervous. But instead of just driving down late wed and coming back thursday evening, thinking of taking the train.

No experience with trains in US, but anyone have any experience with amtrak?

Because of car problems from before, and tickets being cheaper than the gas both ways + if theres weather issues, and I can do homework/rest on the train think I will be going down wednesday afternoon and leaving friday afternoon

I'm angry that Empire Strikes Back isn't making many top 5 lists.

I, too, am eager to poke fun at CR's top 5.

Aw man, there are a lot of animated movies I like a lot. The first one that comes to mind is Renaissance. There are also some pretty good adult oriented japanese movies, like most of the stuff by Satoshi Kon (Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress). Also there's Ghost in the Shell which I liked a lot, and the sequels which were beautiful but perhaps not the greatest movies. Studio Ghibli is aimed pretty solidly at kids but I think most of them are OK, worth watching once at least. I've seen several of them more than once, the boy digs them. I really liked the style of The Secret of Kells although it's kind of kid oriented also. I also liked the movie Coraline, although again it's for kids.

There's also some more serious stuff... Persepolis (sort of an autobiography), Waltz with Bashir, which is odd in that it's sort of an... animated documentary.

Do Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly count as animated?

I think animated movies are under-explored. There are a lot of stories that I think are easier to tell in animation than in filming and it's a shame that people don't try to make more serious animation.

Eh, too obvious I think. For top X lists I think people sort of like set aside part of the prize pool to chop and then play for the rest.
