I know eyesight is a factor of heath, but Health & Fitness is more about working out, exercise, weight control (loss or gain), diet, etc. I mention that because you'll probably get more answers at one of the poker-centric forums.
That being said, it sounds like your eye doctor gave you standard reading glasses. That's fine, but you can get an actual prescription. I went to mine and got a prescription for the exact distance at which I use my computer. I'm very happy with them.
Next, check your monitor quality. A great IPS screen with very high resolution and minimal glare is worth the premium over a lower resolution TN screen with colors that shift every time you change your viewing angle slightly. You might not notice it just glancing at it, but you'll notice the difference when using it. Your iPad has a high quality IPS display, for example.
You can also adjust the monitor settings. The brightest setting isn't always optimal. Changing the table display may help too. Darker is usually better.
