Are exercise bikes a waste of time? Are exercise bikes a waste of time?

I went on an exercise bike last week for 40 mins. I havent worked out in years so I figured I would wake up the next morning unable to wake. To my dismay my legs felt fine and fresh. Boy was I disappointed. I thought the whole point of this exercise thing was to break down your muscles and get so sore and unable to walk the next morning.

So what I am asking is are the exercise bikes a waste of time? Do they even help? What are they good for? I pressed weight loss on the machine and burned 97 calories. I dunno if thats good or not. I dont really think I can run longer than 10 seconds maybe 5 seconds so running is out of the question. But my main question is what benefit can I expect from using an exercise bike are they any good or should I avoid them at all costs?

if you burn 97 calories each time you ride the bike then you only have to exercise 35 more times to lose 1 pound of fat. keep up the good work and dont get discouraged if progress is slow.

97 calories for 40 minutes is really low. that cannot be right. using excersise bikes can burn a lot of calories. i burn between 750 to 1000 in an hour. how can it not be helpful burning that many calories when trying to lose weight

AirDynes are the new wave among the fitness intelligentsia. I think they're all freaks.

Does the fact that using an AirDyne is only slightly less ghey than fondling another guys balls with your tongue weigh into the decision at all?

Well the resistance and rpms are a huge factor. You can have basically no resistance and go at 45 rpms and you won't get much of a workout. If you go at 75-80rpm at a moderate resistance than that should be a decent workout. Overall, stationary cycling doesn't burn as many calories per intensity/ time as some other exercise because the body doesn't really need to stabilize itself.

just bump up the resistance level until it burns, like any other exercise.

What are your physical limitations that prevent you from running more than 10 seconds at a time?

if you are really out of shape, sprinting for 30secs is really tough but not being able to handle 10secs of semi-intense jogging is taking that to a new level

Uh well. I gained a ton of weight so kind of hard to run full speed without losing my balance. I never been a big fan of running anyways. Exercise machines are more fun for me. Just dont know the value of them.

I'm 6'1 293 right now. Trying to add 30-40 pounds of muscle.

Each minute Lance cranks his pedals, he burns 17.5 calories

Yeah I mean 17k a minute would kill him. 17.5 a min is more like it. That would be 700 after 40 mins. I am not sure what resistance the "weight loss" button is but i dont think it was too high. I am going to just put it on max resistance tomorrow and go as hard and far as I can.

dont run if you dont want to. fat people always try to run for weightloss but their bodies cant handle it so they get injured/discouraged and quit exercising completely. just find something that you enjoy doing and do it.

So its possible to go from 293 to 225 if i go on an exercise bike? Basically I want to know if I can achieve my weight goals eating the way I do. I am willing to go on the bike for as long as I need to reach my weight goals while eating anything I want. Just ate 5 pieces of churchs chicken and tons of cole slaw and mashed potatoes and 3 biscuits. Knowing this and assuming I will max out( by max out i mean going as long as i can everyday. increasing everyday obv) on an exercise bike for the next year. What are my chances of dropping 68 pounds?

your chances are zero eating that way. to lose weight on that diet you would need to workout like michael phelps. if you dont have the will power to go on a diet then you wont have the will power to exercise for 6 hours a day on an exercise bike. so you either need to learn to love and accept your fat self or go on a diet.

Your chances would be much better if you sorted out your diet. Just make small improvements every week. It is possible to out train a ****ty diet but it takes way longer and way more hard work.

You can out train a sh*tty diet but the diet itself will compromise your energy level and workout intensity.

As far as running goes I have found sprinting, especially uphill, to be far more productive for me than distance running at a slower pace. It has the added benefit of taking less time as well.
