Today:

Bench: 10x155
Deadlift: 10x315

Kept it light and quick, first time doing these in close to a month. Felt decent with the brace on, no issues with pain or grip on the deadlift. Did have my MRI Monday, meeting with the surgeon tomorrow afternoon to go over the results. Fingers crossed.

So haven't updated this in a while. Results of the MRI was a completely torn radial collateral ligament in my thumb, had surgery last Monday. Been walking around with a splint and some surgical bandages and padding or whatever they're called and then got changed to a waterproof cast yesterday, so I can start working out again. Can't really do much besides run and squat, but did a little over 3 miles on the treadmill earlier tonight. I'm going to be in the cast for the next four weeks, then I begin rehab to strengthen my thumb. In the five minutes I had after they took the splint off and fitted me for the cast, I couldn't bend my thumb at all, so I imagine it's going to be a process. I was told to expect three months until I make a full recovery, so lot of squatting and running I guess.

So back at it. Played soccer on Sunday. Did 3 miles on the treadmill on Monday, 10x185 squatting yesterday and then 2 miles on the treadmill, and then got a break in the weather after single digit temps and about 18" of snow over the weekend, so went outside and did about a 2 and 1/3 mile fartlek. Still too much snow to run on the sidewalks, but 45 degree temperatures melted the side streets enough to run on them. Checking in between 200 and 205 these days, so going to try and take that back down sub 190 over the next few months.

Lifted again today. Squatted 10x195, did 2.25 miles on the treadmill, and then played soccer tonight. Starting to get my wind back, wasn't so out of breath unless I made a run on offense and then had to immediately run back the other way.

In a cast for about three more weeks, then I start rehab to regain strength and the full range of motion. I was told the whole process should take about three months, so about two months of rehab it looks like. It was pretty painful for the first few days after the surgery, but it hasn't hurt since then. Just out of commission for a while.

Haven't been updated but been in the gym a little bit. Still can't do anything but squat. Worked up to an easy 10x235 today. Had my cast taken off a week and a half ago and began rehab, but somehow it completely slipped their mind that they immobilized the joint with a pin in addition to the cast and didn't remove it, so I still can't bend my thumb at all at the middle joint.

There was a bump on the inside of my thumb that felt like I was getting stabbed in the thumb with a push pin every time I brushed against it, so I sent them a message asking them what was going on over the weekend. They set up an appointment on Thursday for me and immediately X-rayed my thumb, which seemed less than promising since whatever is in there shouldn't be a mystery since I was unconscious during the surgery whereas they were the ones who actually did it. So then they told me whoops, it was an "oversight" and that the surgeon takes pins out on Wednesdays, so now I have go back next week and get that done. So looks like I'm two weeks behind on my recovery thanks to that.

Also fat as ****, somewhere around 208-210. Going to be a hard cut over the next few months.

Unfortunately I don't think two weeks where I was still able to work will result in too many damages, so I going to be hard pressed to find a lawyer. Haven't remembered to update here, but got the pin taken out last week. Starting to get some mobility back in the thumb, maybe 75% by now? Started strength exercises Wednesday, just mostly messing around with some putty and rubber bands. Still can't do anything but squat, did 9x250 Tuesday and 8x255 Thursday.

Had the flu last week, didn’t lift. Lost a few pounds so reset at the beginning of this week, did 10x225 and 10x235, so seem about the same.

It’s been about three weeks since I got the pin pulled from my thumb and I’ve only got about 50% ROM back, and that I’m pretty sure was all in the first week. My rehab therapist said it could be scar tissue, but I’m a little dubious. I’ve got a little bump on the back of my thumb that looks like it could be a second pin they forgot to take out, feels a lot like it too where no matter how hard I push on the thumb, it just won’t move past that 50% mark. Have a follow up with the surgery team Weds, we’ll see what they have to say. Getting tired of this

Did 8x245 this afternoon and then ran a 7:30 mile on the treadmill, nice and easy before playing soccer in 45 minutes

I'm kind of in the same boat as you in that I'm trying to cut, but I squat and I run a good bit. I'm looking for programming ideas.

Do you have some sort of program you're following or are you just winging it (like me)?

I'm just winging it. Running and squatting are practically the only two exercises I can do until my thumb is cleared, so I pretty just squat 3x a week and then run most days. Got fat and out of shape over the winter, so just sort of logging some miles running to build up a bit of a base at the moment. Signed up for a 5k with my dad in the middle of May, so I'll probably start up a 6-8 week 5k program next week once it starts to get consistently warm out and the sidewalks aren't covered in ice. Did 4.5 miles today on the treadmill at an 8:30 pace, felt pretty easy.

7x250 today. Ran a couple miles afterwards at an 8:00 pace. Fairly easy, starting to get a little bit of my cardio back. Weighed in at 204.2 this morning, so down about 5 pounds give or take from peak fatness this winter. Down one slot on my belt too, so not just water weight. Got to get back to 190 within the next 2-4 months.

Pretty banged and bruised up from getting fouled a few times last night. Tried squatting today, but I must have bruised my knee, it hurt and felt unstable at the bottom of the squat. Did a couple warmup sets and shut it down, never got above 135. So just ran a little bit instead on the treadmill, did 3 miles.

Squatted yesterday. Knee was maybe 75%, could still feel it when I hit the bottom, but it wasn't nearly as painful as Friday, and it felt pretty stable. Still kept it light, just 3x5x225, then banged out a couple miles on the treadmill. Went outside today and did a 3 mile fartlek. Kicked my ass a little bit, but was good to get off the treadmill.

Today:

Squat: 10x225

Knee felt better. Little stiff and painful during my first few warm-up sets, but then I stretched it out in between every set and that really helped loosen it up a lot, was pretty much pain free from that point forward. Still kept it light but repped out on the last set, it was a pretty easy 10. Ran 2.25 miles on the treadmill afterwards, just under an 8:00 pace after kicking it up to a 7:30 and then 7:00 minute pace for the last minute or two. Weighed in at 201.8 this morning, hoping to get back under 200 in the next week or two.

Saw my rehab therapist yesterday. He seems to think the original time line I was giving for my thumb was too aggressive. He said he would have predicted two months until I had full range of motion, not two weeks, so we'll see. He did recommend coming to rehab once or twice a week instead of every two weeks to work through this plateau, so I'm not entirely sure that he thinks this is normal. If it was, I'd have to think he'd have had me coming in on that schedule every time instead of bumping it up from every two weeks. I have an appointment with the surgical team tomorrow, so we'll see what they have to say.

Today:

Press: 8x105
Squat: 5x235

Got kneed in the thigh pretty good on Sunday and was limping around for a few days with quite a Charlie horse, loosened up today enough that I could go lift. Still felt a little tight squatting, so I cut it off at five and didn't rep out.

Thumb has been making significant progress in the last week. Really been aggressively stretching it, and it's making a difference. So figured I should start doing some upper body work. I use a thumbless grip in the press anyways, so started there. First upper body stuff I've done this year I think. Obviously down from what I used to be able to do, but not horrible.

Biggest thing is I got asked to sub in goal tonight, and since my thumb was feeling pretty good and I've been told it's healed up well and is super stable, decided to take them up on it. No problems, pain free and didn't have any issues catching at all. Not sure if I'll get back full time in net for my regular teams or not, have to talk with the guys filling in and see what they want to do.

Today:

Bench: 10x135
Deadlift: 10x285

Thumb's feeling good, so decided to push it a little further. Felt fine, no issues at all. The bar felt stable in my hands at all times, so I think I'm pretty much back to normal as far as lifting goes.

Lifted on Monday. Think I did 8x235? Can’t remember. 7or8x110 presing too. Today did 11x140 bench, 10x285 deadlift. Think I actually did 275 last week

Been forgetting to update this, missed a few workouts. Bench was pretty much at my limits, deadlift left at least a rep or two in the tank

Today:

Press: 6x120 (maybe 7)
Squat: 8x245

Press felt weird from the beginning. My right shoulder was sore, must have reaggravated it playing kickball or soccer this week, yet I kept locking out the left side last, especially as the set went on. Squat was fine, probably had a rep or two in the tank if I really pushed it.

Tuesday:

Bench: 9x160
Deadlift: 10x315

Today:

Press: 6x120
Squat: 5x250

Press went up more evenly that last time, but still just six reps. Did one fairly slow squat set and called it. Running a 5k tomorrow at 8AM, so going to save my legs for that. Still haven’t lost my winter weight nor been running consistently, so no hopes for a PR. Will be happy with sub 24

Ran a 23:35 this morning. Came out fast and did the first mile at just about 7 flat, but it was decently downhill, which meant, of course, the loop back was uphill, and I gassed pretty hard. So lost a little less than a minute from my time last fall when I was 15 pounds lighter and was running a lot more, so not too bad in the grand scheme of things. That course was flatter I think, but this one was a lot wider so I didn't get stuck behind people ever, unlike last time where the first mile I was dodging people left and right on narrow park paths, so it probably evens out.
